Interestingly the 20.23 Ilkley to Skipton ECS is formed of two 333 units coupled together but only one under power.

Presumably they can run in multiple so perhaps the power supply is insufficient.
I don't think there's such a restriction on the 321's.

To fully answer your original question, there is no restriction on 321s regarding pantographs raised and indeed 333s can physically run in multiple

Why? There's numerous examples of multiple unit that won't operate pairs in service.

Exactly that, paperwork has never been done, indeed HEx do still run units in pairs. The unit itself is fully capable of operating in multiple were it allowed to.

I was aware they still ran in pairs (for now), just didn't want someone to pipe up with a spurious theory about distances between pantographs or something!

Is one locked out? I would of though some platforms weren't long enough for all 8 coaches.
