Today I saw a ScotRail 158 being used for the 1544 Hull to Bridlington service. Seems like Northern is having to borrow trains again. Has anyone else ever seen a ToC's train in a location not normally served by that ToC?

But it isn’t a ScotRail 158 - it is a Northern 158; it just hasn’t been repainted yet.

The unit concerned is now part of Northern's fleet, although it hasn't yet been repainted.

To answer your second question, I have seen various ScotRail EMUs in Newcastle before (318s, 320s, 385s and a 380), and I've seen a Greater Anglia 321 at Newark North Gate before.

East Midland Trains had a 156 on loan to Greater Anglia a couple of years ago, that covered most of their routes
ATW had a 150 on loan to GA which was pretty unusual.

I think there is still an EMT 158 which runs some Wherry Line services, though I suppose that isn't quite as unusual as EMT 158s work into Norwich very regularly.

Works an early trip from Norwich to Lowestoft and back and then goes into the hourly Norwich to Liverpool service

There is (at least one?) SWT (not SWR yet) liveried unit down here in GWR land that can be seen working Kemble line services amongst others.

There are currently 3 daily return services on the Tyne Valley Line that are diagrammed to use ScotRail 156s (all work through to/from Glasgow Central), although a ScotRail 156 has worked other services on the Tyne Valley line before when the Glasgow South Western line has been shut. A Northern 156 did make its way up to Glasgow on one of the through workings from the Tyne Valley Line earlier this year, and also operated a Glasgow - East Kilbride round trip whilst it was up there, here's a photo (not mine) of the Northern 156 in Glasgow Central https://www.flickr.com/photos/scottdarg/38831562204/

A Northern 156 apparently turned up at East Kilbride a month or so ago.
My personal record is a pair of Arriva Trains Northern (I.e. The first one) 153s at Glasgow Central on the through service from Leeds via the S&C

EDIT - Argh! Beaten to it!!

Not planned - during service disruption at Orpington a few months ago, Thameslink berthed a 700/0 overnight in Tonbridge. It had worked a Blackfriars to Sevenoaks service and was then due to head ECS to Orpington but couldn't. Fortunately the driver was a Southeastern driver who signed to Tonbridge so the unit ran ECS and stayed overnight. Stock then ran ECS back next morning to form one of the first passenger services from Sevenoaks.

Not the first time a Northern 156 has escaped to Glasgow Central, as 156454 ventured north of the border back in January 2015. Don't think it ventured out to East Kilbride while up here, though.

Sticking with 156s, a Central Trains example (156403) was on hire to First ScotRail in the summer of 2007. Was used across the network during it's time here, from Anniesland-Queen St to Central-Carlisle via Dumfries. Certainly made a change from the Carmine/Cream & Barbie liveries then running around!

I was reading last night about a class 325 which was hauled to Aberdeen in the summer of 2005. This was apparently due to air restrictions because of the G8 summit in Gleneagles, so the mail had to go via train rather than air. Here's a link

Round about 2007/08 and for a couple of years ATW Class 150s could be seen all over FGW anywhere from Great Malvern to Penzance including the Cornish Branches when 5 were on long term lease.

A class 90, 90039, found itself at Llandudno Junction after being dragged as far as there in the consist of a Holyhead service in June 2005, before someone realised that class 90s are, unsurprisingly, not cleared for the North Wales Coast route! EWS/DB class 90s have also turned up at off wires locations such as Thornaby and Toton for tyre turning or repaints.

Also for a short period in the early 2000s Valley Lines branded, though not liveried, class 142s could be found operating on North East services from Heaton depot after Arriva Trains Northern did a straight swap with a batch of their own units. Never did work out what benefit swapping one batch of 142s for another bestowed on either operator.

In August last year Cross Country hired in an EMT powercar one day and then a VTEC one the next. I wasn't able to get any photos of the EMT one but here's 43305 heading to Penzance at New Street on the 12th of August 2017.

Class 50s used to make it to Newcastle on the Doncaster works test train. A 33 also rocked up on an exhibition train one time. Class 26s also appeared on occasion on passenger turns - including one on a failed DMU from Carlisle that then did a return run to Durham (that I missed!).

Plus I'm pretty sure there is an early morning Carlisle - Dumfries working which is a Northern 156, departs Carlisle after the lowlander.

That is correct. It's usually formed of two units on the outbound trip, with one unit returning from Dumfries to Newcastle at 06:18 and the other one at 07:43. Although usually operated by Northern 156s, I believe a 142 has occasionally appeared on these services before.
