I travelled on one of the 2+4 HST sets yesterday, and I was very impressed. Wasn't expecting it, when it said "Four Carriages" I expected a double sprinter, then a HST came into view. Think the seating is ideal for the journeys involved, and there is plenty of luggage space too. Ideal for the Cornish holiday traffic
There is only one, I was on it yesterday from Plymouth to Newton Abbot, not often power has to be eased going up Hemerdon to avoid exceeding the 80 limit!

I hadn’t realised there was only one at the moment. Although I hadn’t actually realised there were any! It kept loosing a couple of minutes, so timing seems a (small) issue but I still think they’re great. You must have got on as we got off!

I wonder if the timings are affected by Notch 5 being locked out.

Are the power cars going to stay there while the work is done?
They should be getting a coat of green paint whilst there, but given how long the trailers are taking, I'd expect them to come back before.

That's the one! Although wasn't that just a single powercar?

Just one power car. Train derailed around Luxulyan bank and either the front or rear power car was detached and conveyed the passengers to Luxulyan station where a fleet of cars took them onward. Can’t recall if the train was going to or coming from Newquay.

There is an article online somewhere about it with photos.

Derailment of a High Speed Train in the Valley
- the one car HST episode

The shortest HST formation ever to run in passenger service

On Saturday 25th May 1991, High Speed Train power car No 43035 heading the 11.30 Newquay to Paddington derailed shortly after exiting Luxulyan tunnel. This left it perched perilously over the edge of a high embankment deep in the Luxulyan Valley.

Rather than attempt to de-train the passengers and all their luggage in this almost inaccessible location, they were all moved through to the rear power car, No 43029. After uncoupling, it returned at walking pace through the tunnel to Luxulyan Station where the passengers alighted and were taken to Par in a fleet of cars.

This movement of power car 43029 on its own was - and still is - the shortest ever High Speed Train formation ever to carry passengers.

Thankfully it was early in the season so there were few passengers aboard. More importantly, the HST's driver suspected a track problem on the outbound trip over to Newquay so, on the return, was proceeding with extreme caution. Had the train been moving at permitted line speed and it been a couple of Saturdays later, Luxulyan could well have been remembered rather differently.

Accompanied by pictures showing passengers alighting from the power car and the motor cars in which they completed their journeys.

With these 2+4 HSTs, will GWR keep spare trailers on hand to expand capacity if needed?

Why did they just detach the power car, and not a whole coach with it to put the passengers in? Still, makes a great story.

Perhaps concern that with the front power car in a perilous position, detaching the coaches might have made it more likely the front power car would have gone down the embankment?

Could it have been related to the potential to drive/pilot the power car back the other way from the 'cab' position in the luggage van?
