I was chatting to a driver yesterday who mentioned that during the recent very cold weather, VTEC loco 91119, somewhat overheated and suffered a severe internal fire, resulting in most of the electrical equipment melting and casting very real doubts if it will ever run again, Well under VTEC anyway.
Apparently most of the internal electrical equipment is damaged and would require a complete, costly rebuild, and the loco at the moment is just literally a shell.
The loco is currently at Wabtec, Doncaster for assessment.
The repairs will be very costly and with some of the fleet due to be withdrawn next year the repairs are unlikely to be sanctioned, although I believe there will be an additional class 90 coming in to cover, will just need some smart work by the Rolling Stock Controllers, to keep the 90's on Leeds/Newark runs
