As the husband of a severely disabled wife, I would first of all ask posters to refer from ad hominem attacks on Isabel Oakeshott or indeed anyone else. She just happens to be mistaken and perhaps she sent the tweet on a bad day. For a relative few, the provision of disabled spaces is absolutely crucial. In my own case we need a wider space as my wife exits and enters the car by means of a powered seat which is wound in and out. The provision of disabled spaces is a vexed one and it can clearly be frustrating to able bodied drivers to find a car park full (apart from disabled spaces, that is) Invariably, spaces for disabled motorists are more readily found where parking is monitored and properly controlled. This does not usually apply in supermarket car parks for example, where we usually discover that, despite all the disabled bays being occupied, there are very few disabled people in the store itself. In other words, lazy drivers can, and do, abuse the provision of disabled spaces. I am not familiar with this particular car park, living as I do in the North west of England. Nor do I have an answer to the particular problem here, if indeed it is a problem. I would just ask for a degree of forbearance from able bodied drivers for those who necessarily need to park as closely as possible to the facilities they wish to use.
I would add two further points. In my view the criteria for granting blue badge applications has become noticeably more lax meaning that quite a number of people have a badge when they don't really need one Secondly because, when my wife is with me we absolutely need a disabled space, I never, but never, use a blue badge when she isn't with me. Indeed it is locked in the deepest recesses of her handbag, which as all men know is an area which is strictly off limits
