A pair of 313s on 2V16 0738 Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City have brought the wires down spectacularly at Hornsey. Only one NB line open, significant delays. Inevitable queues of SB trains waiting for platforms at Kings Cross. Moorgate line appears suspended. Chaos...

Another day on the ECML......

I guess it's not 'that' bad in comparison, all the wires into KX could have come down...

I was trying to get to Moorgate this morning. Took a couple of pictures at Hornsey:

In some ways it was lucky. The location has mostly headspans, and more or less anywhere else (a few hundred metres either way) and it would have been all tracks closed. You don't often get to run past a location where the wires (and the train pantographs) are visibly damaged, but your line is still live.

It certainly could have been worse, my train 2T93 (the 07:20 Cambridge North to King's Cross) arrived 53 late. Interestingly, we got to overtake a few trains including 1T11 0651 Kings Lynn to London Kings Cross by using the Up Slow 2. They ended up 12 minutes later than 2T93, despite passing Welwyn Garden City 5 minutes before I got on 2T93. King's Cross was also having to handle the trains that had been en-route for Moorgate and the Down Slow north of Copenhagen Tunnel appeared to be part of the isolated area at one point with one of the Class 700s stranded on its return to Hornsey. The turnback sidings at Ferme Park for trains to reverse over the flyover appeared to be affected as well causing problems stabling the trains booked to go to depot after their peak working. While 2V16 is still stuck at Hornsey station on Down Slow 2, as of 11:32 according to the OpenTrainTimes map, these other sections of track at least appear to have returned to use...

Great pictures jellybaby. I think the cause of the problem may have been the pantograph on the rear 313 de-wiring. This was tangled up in the OLE. You can make out that it has not dropped like that on the leading unit in the second picture. From trains running past you run past it can be seen to be damaged and at a unusual angle...

I was a bit confused as to why trains weren't heading north from Drayton Park but a common power section would explain it.

The train which brought down the wires doesn't seem to have moved yet so the down slow 1 remains blocked. I'm going to go home a different way.

All down lines to be blocked later tonight to enable repairs to be carried out. No trains from Kings Cross or Moorgate after 23:30.

Down Slow 2 is now open, allowing limited service to operate from Moorgate this evening.

VTWC are accepting tickets for journeys to Scotland if it is any help

Unfortunately I’m on a freebie which specifically states no other TOCs can be used. Also I’m going for the ECML diverts. I can see it being wedged.

Good thing I checked this thread and NRE before leaving home this morning. I'm heading towards London to catch the 0843 VTWC to Birmingham International for the NEC. Seeing there are no services into King's Cross until 0830, I've headed over to Bedford to take a Thameslink to St Pancras instead. Barrier staff at Bedford weren't aware of the line closure towards King's Cross, but after explaining the situation were fine with it.

Ticket acceptance on Thameslink was originally from Luton & St Albans - London - and vice versa - and increased to "any reasonable routes" from 0730, in reaction to passengers making their own way to various stations. Unfortunately that was a little before you got there! I understand it was pretty manic arranging all the different bus and ticketing options, as some bus companies initially weren't able to find resources to help out.

That's interesting. While I did see that the particular notice about the disruption referred to using bus services from Stevenage, Welwyn and Hatfield to Luton/St Albans, the official documentation on Great Northern's website regarding alternative routes during general disruption states for travel from Biggleswade to Kings Cross (my ticket was Biggleswade to London Terminals) to travel to Bedford and use Thameslink from there, which is why I did that. Fair enough if it was actually the wrong thing to do, but as I say the barrier staff at Bedford were happy enough when I explained the situation. Had they not allowed me through, I would have bought a single to St Pancras to save hassle.

Entirely the right thing to do. I can't see any problem with asking staff if you can use a published alternative route. My point was actually that GTR actually independently did implement that level of ticket acceptance, so you did the sensible thing and they followed suit, but just not quite as early as you were travelling!

Trains stopping at 2330 out of King's Cross tonight again I believe, followed by single line working for a handful of trains thereafter. Advice is to travel before the shut down of all three down lines.
