Grammar seats are those used on GWR HSTs/ScotRail 158s/EMT 158s/OBB RailJet. They have never been used in 444s.
They are Grammer seats, it's a different type to the ones found in the GWR HSTs etc. Grammer is a company and not a specific seat.

Not just one airport really.
OK, Southampton is the only actual airport station, but Bournemouth is the nearest station to Bournemouth Airport, Woking has the Heathrow coaches and Clapham Junction is regularly used for interchanges to Gatwick.

So yes luggage racks would be a good idea.

Also you've got the channel ferries at Poole and Portsmouth, cruise terminal at Southampton as well. Apart from accident repairs or painting into the new livery, have they (Desiros) had any full repaints since new?

Oh ok. Aren’t the planned first class seats the IC3000s?

Aren’t they what are used in 458 first class as well?
Planned 444 first class seat is Fisa Lean, while 450 first will have the same seats, just covered in cheap vinyl.

458s do have the IC3000s in first and are very comfortable.

The photograph does not show vinyl seats, it shows moquette with a vinyl (or e-leather[1]) headrest, which I personally consider to both look good and be quite a good design decision in terms of keeping clean etc. (So many people still seem to have horribly greasy hair!)

2+2 in First is a stupid idea (might as well just abolish it), but I can't see any problem with the proposals for the Standard seating itself. I hope, indeed, that "wmtrains" does a similar job on the 350s.

Some more details on the Desiro refurbishment.

444
  • First Class layout changed from 2+1 to 2+2.
  • First Class seating reduced from 35 to 32 seats per unit.
  • First Class compartment reduced in size to allow extra Standard Class seats.
  • Buffet removed for extra seating.
  • Guard's office removed for extra seating.
  • One of the two bike storage areas replaced by Standard Class seating.
450
  • First Class moved from centre of the train to behind each cab.
  • First Class seating reduced from 24 to 16 seats per unit.
  • Guard's office removed for extra seating.
  • Extra Standard Class seating as a result of the relocation of First Class.
Hmmm, seems much like less for more (less quality & more seats). The moving of first class on the 450s is interesting, I can understand the desire to make it more secluded but as the sets are gangwayed that will only work to a certain extent. The first class on the GA 360s is at the extremities and the problems are in my experience that being over the motored bogies the ride can be livelier than in the middle of a non-powered coach and also the air-conditioning in hot weather doesn't seem to work as well as in the centre of the coach which is made worse by any doors between the saloons making the air flow in the first class 'compartment' some what limited.

Is there a specific issue re airflow? Desiro aircon is generally very strong (and noisy) and I haven't noticed such an issue in the small saloons either side of 1st on the LM units. You don't even get much of a bog smell if any.

Though I do note SWT appear to set theirs to a higher temperature than LM.

I've never sat in First Class in the 360s for years, but I am on a 360 several times a week normally and never noticed AC being worse or better in any particular place apart from around near the toilet where there is a different ceiling set-up.

Can't see any moquette in this.

Those seats look bloody awful with their cheap vinyl look, the headrests are crap as well. They look like something from the wrong era brought kicking and screaming into 2017

One thing which could be fitted to the 444s to make them better is luggage racks.

Considering they serve an airport plus 2 reasonably large seaside towns, as how many times have you seen large suitcases seemingly dumped in the vestibules

You also get quite a few Heathrow passengers and crew at Feltham

I think the main reason is you know where the 1st class seats are going to be and stand at an appropriate position on the platform. With the current 450s you do not know if the seating will be in the 2nd or 3rd coach of a 4 car set.

What opportunities are there in the SWR network for stock to end up the wrong way round in normal operation? Just the Hounslow loop?

Least the Arriva buses don't have the horrible retro useless headrest.

Yes, that looks pretty rubbish. What seats are those? The ones used in Southern Electrostar Standard and LM First? They are adequate but nothing more.

I do accept 2+2 1st in a unit with 3+2 Standard, i.e. that there should be one fewer seat across in 1st than Standard generally (or as SBB do on their older regional units substantially increased legroom). But a quality seat is really needed. I think the FISA LEAN would do for 1st in a 3+2 unit, or of course the Grammer IC3000, but not a poor quality regional seat with the armrests far too high[1] up (hence my preference for ironing boards on Southern).

[1] And I'm tall. They must be heading towards the middle of the upper arm on short people.

I don’t think there’s many (if any) diagrams booked to make the unit the wrong way round, but it happens more than it should. During diversions or disruptions units can end up being turned.

Do TM’s not use the catering galley area as a base and to do any admin. Southern OBS/Conductors only have a roller locker behind the universal toilet.
