Red all down the sides where the windows are would look better

It would look better but red is very 'virgin' and the whole point of this livery is to be neutral for the next franchise and having red wraps etc does defeat the point slightly. This way Is one vinyl at each end off and its a blank canvas in the same way the East Coast livery was meant to be.

I think it is an interim Azuma livery - rumours abound that they are going to get an all red front. At least the Pendolinos will have to have a splash of yellow on the front!

Nah, It's gonna have a black nose with red up the sides.

Looks awful. I was rather hoping they'd do the opposite and put the pendo livery on the VTEC trains.

The old livery looks timeless and professional - the new one looks messy.

I get that it's a temporary livery but I can't help but think they're going to go the way of the EC livery as a permanent move if they win the franchise again.

I dunno, I quite like the Azuma one. I don't like the Mk4 one, it's even more rubbish than the old "red and black V" on the Mk3s.

VTEC livery is awful, just doesn’t work well, and always looks dirty. Would be massively improved by just making the white bits grey I think. Quite like the new Pendo livery, hope they use it on the east coast too!

But it's all white, which is what you complained about with the VTEC livery?

I agree it's nasty. However, I think it would look much better if it was painted rather than a vinyl rap which always seems to take on a matt look. I suppose I can't blame VTEC for opting for a cheaper option given the imminent arrival of the new stock...

I quite like the modernity of the matt look, personally. Anything to do with livery is always, like seats, going to be very opinion-based.

I hoped the VTEC IETs were going to get the modified Pendolino livery that featured in the booklet when they first took over East Coast. It was very similar but had red doors rather than dark grey and the front swoop was slightly modified but looked great compared to what they're using now and the awful thing on the IET!

Unfortunately it seems the awful IET livery is going to be used on the Pendolino, and actually looks even worse than the IET because they've lost the the dark strip around the windows!

I note that there's a new staff uniform to match the new neutral livery: It too majors on grey, with sparingly used red elements.

That's a shame. The bright red makes it very easy to pick them out on the platform while keeping a distinguished look befitting the railway, unlike everyone wearing hi-vis with a big F on the back as favoured by FirstGroup. I have heard a number of people comment on the benefits of that.

Yes, it threw me somewhat when looking for a staff member to let me through the barrier at New Street station yesterday morning. The bright red shirts were instantly identifiable, the new grey ones fade into the background, which hardly seems appropriate in roles where visibility to the public is key.

Same uniform as VTEC. Dark blue with red trim. Looks very airline.

I think it looks super.

External jackets still have large splashes of red. I could pick out the staff at Euston yesterday very easily still.

The shirts definitely aren't dark blue, though the jackets, where present, are. Looks very "contracted revenue protection team on a budget" to me, not that it particularly matters.

That's funny. Because my polo shirt is definitely dark blue!
As are the suits. And the Cardigans. And the Coats.

We've all got different colour shirts/dresses though. No red at all for us. Not a million miles different to now, just blue rather than grey.
TM's - Very similar grey shirt to the one we had a while back.
Caterers and Platforms still red.
The poster who said 'very airline' is on the money. The TM's in particular look a lot more formal than they did before. The dreaded tie seems a lot more prominent unfortunately (IMO). I'll still manage to look like an overworked binman though.

We are allowed a choice of polos or formal shirts. The logos are also far more prominent now on the jackets :|

Also, we're allowed tattoos on show.

I will be unveiling my "Human centipede" inspired sleeve soon. ;)

I'll judge on that when I've seen one done.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. Let's see it at 125mph and then I'll decide if it was a good call. If it's anything like East Coast though.. Virgin will be "adapting" the livery on the first few.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet, are the doors changing colour (or already changed) inside and has the yellow / black roof crown been removed?

Thanks,
Ross

Yesterday, passing Alstom's new Widnes facility, I saw the three leading cars (first-class end) of the freshly-painted 390, minus the red ribbon. I must say it looked extremely sleek and smart, in all-over grey with very subtle "1" roundels. Without the window bands, the carriages looked quite different, larger almost.

Post number 80 says that the first train should be due out today - any news on that front?

Seen a picture of it, but it's not mine to share.

Seems identical to the mockup sadly, not a fan, that's another one for the worst livery list. :/
