Lighting wise, it'd mean that they'd be able to get rid of the yellow panel and go black as per the rest of the future fleet - although they should be able to get away with the bulk of the light settings remaining the same, the only change should have to be to the night time setting - where they have to run with 2 dimmed headlamps (+markers) whereas daytime operations only require one full beam headlamp as part of 3 white lights on the front.

As for the naming, no idea why they're going for that, but it's nice to get some more named units on the railways. I presume then that the "flagship" units will also receive names, although perhaps more formal than the system for the 185s (With each class themed of course, for example 8022xx-"City of Leeds" or 680xx-"River Mersey" - certainly preferable to just having things given generic names)

Sounds as bizarre as the old 175 nameplates. They should name 185103 as 'Mum'!

For top train/loco names I don't think anything beats the Virgin thunderbirds - the noise of the loco almost felt appropriate for the name in a strange way.

Surely the obvious thing to name "Pennine" units after is hills... whether it is possible to come up with 51 is another question though!

There was an internal "name the fleet" competition run about a year ago now and I suggested exactly that, naming the fleet based on the routes they serve. Nothing official regarding that competition has been announced yet tho....

Giving the 68s 'peak' names sounds like an excellent idea.

I'd much rather names be used from famous places or people from along the routes served, rather than meaningless girl-names which are to me archaic and ever-so-slightly misogynistic.

It's not as if there's a shortage of things to take names from. I could understand it if it was the Trans-Atacama Desert Railway, so the only landmarks to name your locos after would be "Buffalo Skeleton no.3" or "Withered Cactus" or "Rock Formation that looks like a Willy".

If the list on Wikipedia is correct, then seven of the fourteen 68s leased to TPE will be named.

My guess is the fleet naming competition was either won by the CEO, begging the question does he/she have 51 daughters ? Or is the new naming based on the latest arrival to the lady in the internal PR and communications department whose colleague no doubt came up with this staff morale boosting idea in the first place. :roll:

After all, what's more important to the travelling public a name or a seat in a clean carriage interior.

It's impossible now to identify a set from a bridge if you're taking a photo of it as speed...... Why were they taken off in the first place when the second raft of refurbs began? 108 and 123 were fine.......

Because they aren't required. Pendolinos and voyagers are the same.

The new TPE trains will be the same too.

Anyway, 185144 will be out of refurbishment hopefully by Weds.
