Terminating trains at Sunderland used to always run in to the sidings at Park Lane to switch platform. My bag once accidentally took a trip on the ecs. Being out yellow-penned by your bag is a bit much!

Some still do, other GC services run ECS to Pelaw Goods Loops

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but trains terminating at platform 1 at Paignton have to shunt across to platform 2 to depart, I believe passing another level crossing (twice) on their way.

The shunts pass over Paignton South level crossing, a TMO installation also used by the parallel Dartmouth Steam Railway. Prior to resignalling in the 1980s there was a scissors crossover at the London end of Paignton station. The points for the move from #1 to Torquay didn't have a facing point lock however and the relevant signal was an elevated shunting disc, so loaded passenger trains could never depart under normal circumstances. The layout was simplified to a right hand only crossover when Paignton North signal box was abolished. The Goodrington Yard manoeuvre was little used for many years, with only one or two through HSTs going there on a normal weekday but local services have increased once again in recent years so #1 has to be used more often for arrivals, necessitating the time consuming trip to Goodrington Yard and back before departure. The vast majority of trains continue to terminate and reverse in #2.

I think the Waterloo-Poole trains go into the carriage sidings after terminating for a bit before returning to the platform for the up

Virgin services from Euston terminating at Lancaster used to run ecs to Carnforth, reverse and return ecs to restart at Lancaster, now this has been eliminated with a crossover at the south end of the station.

Three more from the west London area. Southern services terminating at Shepherds Bush reverse via the cross over north of the station. One station further on trains terminating at the high level platforms at Willesden Junction reverse in the siding east of the station. Bakerloo Line servic.es at Stonebridge Park use the depot to reverse

You'll have a an unusual set up at South Parkway when the Euston - Liverpool trains terminate there in pl4 whilst Lime St is shut. They'll have to depart north initially to then cross over and head back south.

Indeed, I believe they are going to have two drivers between Parkway and Runcorn so that one doesn't have to shunt the train and then walk the entire length to take it back towards Runcorn. As much as I am gutted I will have no West Allerton to Lime Street service for a month I am looking forward to getting a Pendolino from Parkway to Crewe. I bet the staff at Parkway aren't looking forward to it.

I've changed the thread title since the discussion has expanded past the initial scope.

I'm disappointed! As we can see, terminating trains run on to a turnback siding (or just to change ends then come back via a trailing crossover) in loads (thousands?) of places - has Alderley Edge been mentioned yet? ...I lost interest when people started missing the point.

I thought it was a very good initial question as there aren't very many proper terminal stations (i.e. with almost all buffer-stops) where trains carry on to other destinations. Hence nominations of Hadfield, Liverpool Lime St, TPE services to/from the airport at Piccadilly, both Bradford Termini etc.

Good point that Beeching cuts etc have altered service patterns (or subsequent routes) from what the original railways offered...

Central Line services terminating at Northolt reverse in a centre siding west of the station. IIRC the same applies at Newbury Park.
Yep and Debden and Woodford.

Also possible at Liverpool Street eastbound, Marble Arch westbound, White City westbound into the siding or eastbound into the depot but only one scheduled train early on a Sunday morning (For Liv St and Marble Arch).

The only practice I can think of was Rugby Central back in the last years of the GC Mainline (1966-69) when the DMU's would run South to a set of buffer stops and then perform a shunt across to the other platform to head back North to Nottingham.

Also I could remember the Class 37 hauled services between Cardiff and Rymney going to Cardiff Canton, running round going back to CDF before going back to Rhymney. Also with Cardiff, do XC services use a turnback siding just past the station or do they just occupy a Platform until the return trip back to Birmingham/Nottingham?.

I haven't read through the whole thread, I'm assuming that Longbridge has been mentioned? Obviously its not a terminus, but a large number of cross city services terminate there, arriving at platform 2 then crossing all 4 running lines in order to reach the turnback siding.
