No because of the hypocrisy of the sexism movement. If someone that looked like Rab C Nesbitt wanted to come in the woman only carriage the door would stay firmly shut, whereas the bloke from the diet coke add the door would be open before he got to it

:D:D:D:D

I like it because its true.

Are you basically suggesting that they completely segregate Men and Women? So in that case it would not just be a 'Women's only coach' but half the number of coaches for Men and the other set of coaches for Women. I don't think that will go down too well with the public, let alone here.

No, I was basically not treating this thread with 100% seriousness.

The question of compulsion raises yet another problem with this proposal. If the general carriages are full and standing, would women be compelled to move into the designated women's carriage should seats be available?

What of a mother travelling with her twelve year old son?

In some countries, they allow the child to go with them inside the car.

Yes, I know. But I was talking more generally about this not working. A lot of people do not travel alone- they travel with friends, family etc... Maybe a (male) child could get away with sitting in a female-only coach but not a husband or a colleague.

Also, if you were to completely segregate Men and Women, would there be a female only first class coach, quiet coach, buffet car, disabled coach, etc... And vice versa for Male coaches.

The idea is ridiculous and wouldn't work.

Obviously the child isn't a potential rapist or bum-toucher yet. It's only when the male becomes a full grown man that women need to be kept safe from him.

How these ideas are ever discussed seriously is baffling.

Very true. Not only is it impractical but it does not nothing to resolve the original issue. i.e. reducing sexual offences on the railway.

Load of rubbish. Its public transport. For the public. You no likey, buy a chuffin car. Taking this to the Nth degree we would end up with one person in one vehicle....er....I know, lets call it an auto-mobile. That got us a long way in the last 100 years didn't it?

I must have missed the bit where they wanted total segregation - can you point it out to me please?

Public transport is great as long as you don't get beaten up, sexually assaulted, raped or murdered.

The idea behind women only carriages was to try and prevent women from being raped or sexually assaulted. I've never met a women who wanted to be raped or sexually assaulted.

As far as I can tell, the people who propose these carriages are not the people who would be using them. Don't fall for the trap of imagining someone demanding special treatment who doesn't actually exist.

That may be the intention, but in reality the segregation only normalises a sense of victimhood for women by normalising the existence of the attackers. We should instead be able to have everyone feeling safe in public, knowing that attackers will be caught and punished (which shouldn't be hard these days with CCTV on almost every train).

Some of you seem to know an awful lot of how a sex attacker thinks by making such statements

What a provocative comment.

No one wants to see women living in fear of rape and sexual assult. But, if theres going to be women only compartments, then we should have women only buses, streets, bars, towns etc. Perhaps to make it even more relavent we could have seperate facilities for every other person who isn't a white anglo saxon male. So we are all segregated into our own little ghettos, for easy control. The key is to make the deterent sufficient to deter the 0.00001% of men who would contemplate such action. The pinko lefty liberal elite have succeeded in apologising for all criminal activity since the second world war and its time it changed. We should come down hard on criminal activity especially when it involves the defenceless. Discipline should start at school. Bad behaviour should be punished not excused.

So what you're saying is that women will be 100% safe in a women-only coach because women have never killed or injured other women before and only men can be violent.

Why have you set up a poll where you can see how other people have voted?

No wonder you are iffy about stating your opinion You're misguided to say the least on this issue.

If you are suggesting public transport is any less safe than private forms of transport, or walking, then I disagree.
The idea behind women only carriages was to try and prevent women from being raped or sexually assaulted.
Clearly it would not prevent this.
I've never met a women who wanted to be raped or sexually assaulted.
I've never met anyone who wanted to be raped or sexually assaulted. Your point is...?

The idea has been refloated because some women still feel unsafe.

No it hasn't, it's been refloated because a particularly stupid MP decided to open his mouth, without thinking it through first, in an attempt to attack the government after some figures were released which didn't prove what he thought they did.

Even his party leader has since said it's a bad idea and not up for discussion, and he suggested it way back in 2015 until it was explained to him sensibly.

Are you ok?

Secluding women isn't the answer.

Early, effective education in school on sexual health and acceptable behaviour is, along with earlier interventions for worrying behaviours and much tougher punishments for sexual assaults.

We do not live in a society where we allow the actions of heinous individuals to alter our way of life.

Interesting that there's often a strong crossover between people who say "terrorists won't win, we will suck it up, carry on as normal, defy those who attack us, we will not be scared" and "women need protecting from men".

A big eff you to these people who essentially paint all men as potential attackers. I bet those people don't support racial profiling. Eff these people a hundred times.

And those same people (including most Labour politicians) are usually very reluctant to accept that issues have arisen from mass immigration from cultures where violence against women is normalised - that would go against their endless pursuit of "multiculturalism".

True, though I'd argue that until recently, indigenous English people had a culture of normalised violence towards women.
