As the title suggests, where have you been recently that you'd recommend to others?
I'd imagine that local knowledge of beautiful places could be a bonus here but not necessarily.
Last night we stayed in our van on Dartmoor with some friends who also have a van at a place called Dartmeet. As the name suggests it's where the East Dart and the West Dart meet in the middle of the Moor.
As we drove there the sun was setting and we had to stop a couple of times for cows to move off the road (very slowly), before we could carry on with our journey. We rattled over cattle grids and ground our way up and down steep hills and winding corners before finding our friends and having a very civilised evening under the stars in the car park listening to the flowing water.
In the morning we had a walk along the river with the dog and looked at the old clapper bridge that's since been bypassed by a more modern bridge (although even the modern bridge was built in the 1790s).
Halfway up the hill out of the valley is a large rock with a split down the middle called 'The Coffin Stone'. Local folklore has it that coffins were rested there on the way to burial at Widecombe-in-the-Moor. One day someone particularly evil was rested there on their final journey and the coffin and rock was struck by lightening thus splitting the rock. There's lots of interesting history like that in this area.
It was one of those days when you realise what a beautiful country we live in if you take the time to look around it and it got me thinking about all the places I've yet to see that other people might know about throughout the country, so over to you folks...
Here's a couple of photos. One that I took and one that I blatantly ripped off from the internet that shows the partly collapsed clapper bridge.
