I wouldn't exactly know to be honest. I did hear last week though of someone being called and being given a training date for the NT driver role. No idea which line they're being sent to so can't answer your question directly, but just shows that there is still a requirement for NT drivers across the combine.

I may have painted staff in a bad light there and that wasn't the intention. I think it's genuine sickness but in the sense that you're more likely to power through whilst on probation, whereas having passed probation you're more likely to take the sick leave. Anyway, it's neither here or there, the problems caused on the line were certainly not down to just a few people being off ill.

I think you're spot on - there are always going to be a contingent of perpetual p*ss takers. At the TOC I work for, there are certain people in front line shift roles who take a week off sick every quarter without fail - the maximum self cert period without being subject to any disciplinary procedures. The way some people see it, there's no incentive to maintain full attendance so they'll take the extra 4 weeks off per year as they're entitled to it. I don't support this attitude to work, not least because they're dumping on their colleagues.

The railways are funny like that - some people who join get radicalised and adopt this bizarre "two fingers to my employers" attitude. I was advised by a colleague in my first railway job to ensure I keep my head down for the first 6 months - then after that do whatever I like. The guy got away with barely doing a stroke of work for years, whilst bullying management and making the most of the support offered by the union. Thankfully he finally got the sack for doing something disgusting in the ticket office and not excising his usual diligence in covering his tracks. Finally, someone had it together enough to dot the is and cross the ts to make the disciplinary stick.

In other industries people can't really get away with behaving in this manner - employment laws which allow people to be sacked with no recourse for the first two years of service are more readily invoked. It's one extreme to the other with workers rights! Too little is a very bad thing, but give an inch and some people really will take a mile.

Thank you for bringing this up RJ. I was trying to be restrained in my reply to Jambo but share your views entirely. I have always been one who would need to be on a hospital gurney to call in sick and cannot tolerate the individuals who do not give a damn about their employer, work colleagues or customers, who let's face it, provide the means to give us the income in the first place.

Yup, same here. But to be honest, if there are people who have passed all the assessments now and are not due to start training till next year, do you think they will continue assessing more people?

Not to dash your hopes but this is not something that is likely to happen in the very near future. I've been told that the likes of the H&C, Circle, District etc. are all a few years away yet. This is because the planned engineering works/signalling upgrades that started last year will not allow a NT service to run whilst they are taking place.

Hey folks,

Not long until I start now, and I know that there are a few current TfL chaps on here - I understand that they offer a 75% reduction on NR season tickets and a loan to pay, is it possible to apply for this and have it ready for when you start, or will I need to wait until I begin in order to apply for this, and pay weeklies in the meantime?

Also, another question, does anyone know what the payday schedule is like at TfL, e.g. every 4 weeks, the last day of each month etc..

Pay is every 4 weeks in arrears. Never looked at season ticket privileges so someone else will have to field that one!

Season ticket loans/reimbursements take at least two weeks to apply for/process and will be paid into your next salary (reimbursements paid over 10 pay periods) so not able to do before you start.

Next pay for drivers is 30th August and every 4 weeks.

No dates mentioned for next year. As for how many people in each course,I can only answer for my course and that's 6 external and 10 internals.

Another info: 12000 applicants applied for the latest NT role.
