Hello everyone, been lurking this forum for a while but this is my first post! Have a question about ticketing:
Yesterday I was travelling on the Southern network, starting at Chichester to visit a friend at Littlehampton. I bought my off-peak day return with my 16-25 railcard.
Literally as soon as the train pulled away (how annoying!) my friend texted me to say due to the bad weather we should meet up in Portsmouth and do something there. So I hopped off the train at Barnham, and exited the station; the barriers allowed the break of journey.
In a situation like this I'd board a train to Portsmouth, find the guard before Chichester and ask to buy my ticket there. I always believed this was acceptable, as long as you approach the guard before your current ticket expires. However, as Chichester was the next stop, I didn't want to risk missing the guard and travelling ticketless, so I went to the Barnham ticket office.
I presented my railcard and RTN portion from Littlehampton to Chichester, and asked if I could buy a day return from Chichester to Portsmouth Harbour.
The lady behind the counter was really nice and said that she'd do that for me this time, but that I was supposed to do this on the outward part of my return journey. She took my RTN portion and held it up to the computer screen, while asking where I had come from. I explained my story, she sold me an Off peak day return from Chichester to Portsmouth Harbour, I boarded the train and everything was great after that.
I suppose I've never heard of such a rule existing. I can see it from the TOC's view: how did they know I didn't pick my Littlehampton to Chichester ticket off the floor, and using it to save money on my fare? But had I gone to a Southern TVM, I could have bought tickets from another station, or I could have just approached the guard before Chichester.
I have never been aware of such a rule existing on return tickets, because I've always been allowed to do it on board the train - but after reading some posts in this forum, that doesn't always mean I'm in the right!
So I suppose my two questions are:
1.) Am I allowed to ask for a ticket from another station to extend the return portion of my off-peak return?
2.) If I'm not allowed to, and a similar situation arises, am I therefore expected to just buy a ticket to Portsmouth from Barnham, therefore paying twice for Barnham to Chichester?
