Origin 2471 BANGOR (GWYNEDD) BNG
Destination H759 CAERNARFON BUS
Railcard / Discount PUBLIC

I have looked up this fare. I see that a through fare to Caernarfon only appears to be offered from Bangor. I also notice that no railcard discounts can be applied. So it is £4.20 return be that for a day return or a period return.

Does any one know, is this correct that Bangor has to be the origin? I assume it can only be purchased with a valid rail ticket. Is £4.20 return cheaper then buying on the bus and is that correct that railcard discounts cannot be applied?

No Railcard discount and cheaper than the bus, yes.

Only available from Bangor as a separate add-on to the rail fare. You wouldn't want to buy it from further afield including rail travel anyway, as you won't get any Railcard discount.

An Arriva Bangor Day Ticket is £4.50. If I was going elsewhere in Bangor area I'd buy on the bus.

Thanks, will I have any bother just asking for this ticket when I get off the train at Bangor? I think it could be problematic at other stations.

Generally speaking, bus add-ons are supposed to be purchased at the same time as your rail ticket unless there is no opportunity to do so. Regardless, I certainly wouldn't wait until arriving at Bangor before attempting to obtain said ticket, as the official line would likely be along the lines of, "Sorry, but you should have bought it beforehand. You'll have to buy a normal bus ticket."

Oh, this is interesting. At one stage the plusbus zone at Bangor extended to Caernarfon I think but no more. I see there are no restrictions listed on BRFares - does this mean that you can use any bus (not just an Arriva one)?

Not always, I think the Express Buses are cheaper on a single basis, but more certain that Arriva Buses are more expensive.

I agree, I have done this twice in recent months, paying cash on the bus both times. Arriva was £4.80 one way Bangor to Caernarfon and Express Motors was £2 coming back the other way (on a different day).

That is quite some difference.

I knew Arriva charged just over £4 but didn't realise Express was so cheap.

There is an Arriva 'Bangor - Caernarfon Daysaver' at £3.50, advertised on the local tickets section of the Arriva website when I was looking earlier this year.

A bit cheaper than two times £2 on Express Motors for a day trip.

I went for the Red Rover instead and travelled the long way from the Junction to Caernarfon via Betws and Llanberis.

If you can manage to coincide your journey to use the 'T2' bus service and travel on Saturday or Sunday (until at least May 2018) the Welsh Government are providing free travel on all Traws-Cymru 'T' routes for everyone.
