G'day everyone,

I was very fortunate to visit the above station whilst trains were still running albeit the station had been closed and at some stage this will be part of a trip report.

However, I'm curious to know whether this was the first new build station not to be staffed. I never any saw evidence of a ticket office and this is backed up by a photo taken when the station opened showing toilets and a waiting room but nothing else.

Your thoughts / corrections / ideas would be very welcome!

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

A lot of 'halts' have never been staffed, Dilton Marsh (opened 1937) for example. I suppose it really depends on where you draw the line between station (traditionally staffed) and halt (traditionally unstaffed).

Was it not common practice for some Southern Region 'halts' to have tickets issued by the adjacent signaller?

The original Woodhead station was staffed. Tickets were issued from the station until the 1950s but unsure whether the later station was destaffed or not.
Many Southern Region "halts" did have tickets issued from adjacent signal/crossing boxes. Some of the last ones being Littlehaven and Stone Crossing. Some Southern Region halts were never staffed such as Swale, Doleham, Three Oaks.

Now then that's very interesting! If you don't mind can I ask you how you know that the original station was staffed?
