There are 5 Ascot-Guildford diagrams on a Saturday. Three are formed by a single 450, the other two each by 456+456.

So there are four 456s in service, formed as two pairs.

This suggests that 2/3 of trains are 456s on Saturdays. Thank you and everyone who has answered my question here.

No...

5 trains required, all four car:
3 are 450s (single 450)
2 are 456s (pair of 456s each)

So 40% of trains are 456.

Oooh, that means that I shall have to take care how much I do on a Saturday daytrip. I might even prefer to do the route on a Mon-Fri instead. Even this could be tricky as the 456s could soon be cascaded to top up 455s once the 707s enter service.

Yes, they are all 456s on a Sunday. But the Sunday service only required 2 sets. Both 2x456.

With the majority of Suburban services only formed of 4 coaches they aren't needed on Saturdays. At present there are a small number of crews who sign 455s but not 456s, so it is simpler to run everything using 455s to avoid any issues.

They could run pairs or trios of 456's which would release 455's to bolster other services.

I know on the Ascot line they do, but apart from that do 456s ever run without 455s?

Plus - do any SWT 456s ever run with just a single 2 car set?

Finally, can 455s run as twelve cars, i know they dont but why not?

Oh - and i know its irrelevant but what happened to the LO 321? Saves me having to make a thread

I think they have a six car (3x456) diagram running back and forth to Hampton Court on a Sunday.

I don't believe so. SWT seem more cautious about gapping them than Southern ever did from what I've read.

Finally, can 455s run as twelve cars, i know they dont but why not?

They 'can' but only on ECS moves I believe (I only know this because of a YouTube clip I've seen from somewhere around Eastleigh so I couldn't tell you how unnusual it is).

Good question. From this thread I suspect it's gone to Scotland as a 320/4.

In answer to your SWT questions.

1. No, they're scared about gapping them and causing chaos. I've managed to gap a 4x456 set! But luckily I had enough air to roll back onto the juice which was a matter of a 15cm (6" away).

2. 455's can and have run in 12 car formations in service, however as they don't have SDO they can only call at stations upto Surbiton, after that they can't call at any intermediate stations due to the lack of SDO. They do, do an occasional 12 car positioning/transit move from say Clapham to Wimbledon/Eastleigh/Strawberry Hill/Guildford or vv to save on pathways or when towing a dead seat back for repair.

Interesting.

As a passenger (without checking) I'd have assumed Wimbledon had long enough platforms just because they always seem to have so much unused space around. Maybe that's my childhood memories catching up with me, though, since I'd also like to assume Clapham has enough space but know full well that it doesn't.

All stations up to Waterloo are 8 (both 450/455) or 10 car (458+458 or 455+455+456), but not 444+444 as they're longer.

A 10 car will not quite fit in on the DMF at Clapham and it's a 9 car platform on the UL at Clapham. ASDO makes it quite easy now.

DMF (Platform 9) at Clapham Junction fits 10 450 carriages and a 10-car 455/456 formation. Platform 7, the loop off the up fast fits 9 450 carriages but a 10-car 455/456 formation fits too. I can't remember what Platform 8 is off the top of my head, but it's use is near enough completely banned now anyway.

I always getting them addled. Because the simple reason being that I'm always on the stop mark & it's usually the one at the far end of the platform.

I just let the electronics do the work.

I think it might be two triples out on a Sunday now - I saw one triple in platform 8 at Wimbledon on Sunday 4th June while waiting for an Epsom service, and about five to ten minutes later another triple went towards Waterloo.

According to documentation, there have been two 6/456 turns on Sundays since at least last May.
