Class 455 with AC Motors

About 455 913 - could it be more that it's simply got more recently overhauled bits on it and is therefore in the best condition of those that still have the original versions of the traction equipment??

I am guessing they didn't simply move the bits over from the squashed vehicle without giving them a complete overhaul first?

No. Missed out because it's going to be a pain.

The components have been on there for a relatively long time as some were renewed at the crash repair and then it had a slightly reduced scope C6 so it's been running round with the same bits for 3-4 years.

5864 outshopped today from C6 will be retractioned in August as unit 90. It's nice overhauled camshaft, CLR and all the associated control equipment will be on for about 3 months.....

Thanks 5920 for the info. So 455857 will be the first 455/8 to be retractioned?? (apart from 870 which was Unit 1). We now know that 455913 will be the final one to be done.

I'd appreciate it if you could tell me where 455847, 455849 and 455860 are in the order

Seen 455 857 today with new Vossloh boxes but it still retains the original humming sound from the EE507's when stationary. However the rest of the units including 870 (as far as I remember) don't have this sound, but it was the best part of the old motors so I'm glad they have retained it

455 861 returned from Eastleigh with new Vossloh Boxes, saw it on Friday just after it returned in a siding at Wimbledon Park Depot

Motors don't make any sound when stationary and they have new motors on them too which are fitted at the same time as the traction packages.

That's still not the motor. I can't say for certain but it is probably the motor-alternator, the thing that provides AC power for the train lights, heating, etc. A stationary motor doesn't make any noise

I'm trying to determine what the noise is, but the 455/7's used to have that and now they don't, but the /8's still do for some reason.

The noise heard from 0 to 14 seconds?

That was the GEC Motor Alternator as others suggested.

I don't see the fascination of these awful "downgraded" units, their useless in the damp, wet or low adhesion. The camshaft control was much better that this modern rubbish which can't deal with leafs or ice.

Perhaps you can explain to me why it took me 15 minutes to go from Ewell to Epsom with a 4 car after a light shower, because the unit couldn't get any grip.

Something that a camshaft unit would deal with quite easily or the odd hiccup as Juniper Driver will attest. I think that FG have got the right idea in dispensing with these retractioned units.
