Don't know all the technical stuff, but metal expands in the heat and on the railways results in rails buckling. The news focused very much on the WCML as you had the 125mph trains reduced to 60mph, which itself resulted in a hell of a lot of cancellations into and out of Euston.

Simple chemistry/physics. As anything is heated up, the heat energy is transferred to the molecules/atoms, they gain kinetic energy and move apart slightly and the object expands.

This can be seen with a bimetallic strip:

It's a bad video, but I couldn't find a better one without putting a 50 minute lecture up)

(It's been a while since Int. 2 Physics, so I may be a bit rusty).

Makes sense, if the tracks are expending there's gonna be problems.

in my school, we've been allowed to film something with our phones in science before now and that was perfectly safe so what are you complaining about?

But yes, there would be speed restrictions due to the fact that the metal wouldn't be as strong as they would be in cooler conditions!

What's a science lap? Is that when you run around a circuit reciting the periodic table or something? ;)

They're filming a lesson and not getting in the way of the experiment or teaching. In fact, by posting it on youtube, they're sharing knowledge. Slightly different to taking over a rail station concourse.

Now go tidy your room.

No, you said a Railway station isn't a theatre thus shouldn't be used to film such things. No matter what other reason, a science lab isn't a theatre either so equally shouldn't have anything filmed there.

Go and clean your house. :idea::roll:

My argument with the railway station was not the filming, which would be minimally invasive for several reasons, but the fact that the dance charade was happening in the first place! It appeared to be a disruption to what I know to be a busy station and could easily have resulted in someone missing their train. I said a railway station was not a theatre because the performance should not have happened, not the filming, which is done on a daily basis by rail enthusiasts, the railway industry and news teams.

The filming in this case, as I have already said, is for educational purposes and is useful in spreading knowledge; it's a good visual aid for people who want to learn about rates of expansions in metals and the bimetallic strip.

had a small sleet shower earlier. was in business studies at the time but as usual, way head of meself with work so had nothing to do for over an hour

Well while its snowing and raining and nice and cold for you guys, spare a thought to the poor souls in Australia, in particular to South Australia and Victoria where todays top temprature in Adelaide was 45.5'C and in Melbourne it was 41'C.

But in South Australia, Adelaide they have another 7 days of weather over 38'C and tomorrow in Ceduna, halfway along the Nulabour in S.A it will be 46'C and here in Melbourne it will be 43'C tomorrow (expected to reach 45'C) and Friday and 35'C on Saturday.

One of the biggest problems with the extream heat here is the high risk of bushfires and when the weather heats up it buckles the tracks and so we get mass cancelations as 95% of the railways in Melbourne are above ground and the aircon on the majority of the trains cannot cope with hor days of more that 32'C.

The weather in the papers and all the related problems in Melbourne and Adelaide. Something you guys would probably never see in the papers.

Clock'ouse and I are certainly going to be having an interesting time of it today...I went out for a smoke about half an hour ago, and the snow was at least six inches deep out there! :shock:<D

Clockhouse: If I were ye, I'd pick up the 'phone to Woking and pull a sickie. If the snow keeps up like it has been tonight, ye'll have one helluva time trying to get to Woking - Or anywhere else for that matter - By rail! :shock:

As it is, the 04:00 (Normally ex Guildford) has been rescheduled to start from Woking at 04:10, and that can only mean some major snowfall around the Worpleston area... :D<D

When its really hot in the UK or Europe, do the tracks ever buckle? And if they do, how hot is it when they do? And what do you's do to the tracks to prevent them from buckling?

Nah - I'll make my own decisions, thanks. It's people like my mate I'm on this course with that really have it bad. He lives out in the sticks :lol: Just had a call from him to say his Dad's landrover is stuck!

I'm not sure if they buckle, but when it was really hot last year, trains were made to slow down because of the heat... So, meh. Someone else can give you a better answer probably!
