But a fire starting in the relatively new engines is going to make them look less appealing still. I know failures can happen even to new stock, but for a product that has a lot of work to do to convince many, this isn't good news.
The most likely times for an engine to blow up are when it's brand new, and when it's got a few tens of thousands of hours service. The people who really matter (not us) know this.

Vivarail has confirmed there will be an investigation with the RAIB. Trial in service postponed - no surprise there!

I missed the word "report" off of "RAIB Investigation Report" - it's been a long day! I Agree there will certainly be an investigation, whether the public will see the result of that or not was the point I was making.

[OT] Lewis Hamilton knows this as well.

4 pacer fires in 2016 by my count. No, not literally all the time you're correct, but as everyone else has inferred correctly it is a figure of speech.

The point I was making is that engine fires on DMUs aren't rare events that see the permanent withdrawal of manafacturers rolling stock from mainline service. I don't see 68s lined up for the cutters torch because of the high profile fires they've suffered this year.

But I've seen several posts on this thread already saying this is the end of vivarail. It is far, far too soon to be taking that view - the investigation into the incident hasn't even begun, we're still in the "response" stage of the incident. Latest reports are that once the fire brigade have damped down the unit will be fit to move under its own power. Let's save the doom mongering for when there's actually a credible account of what happened and why.

The key difference is Pacers are in everyday use and 97% haven't caught fire this year. While for the 230s 0% of them haven't caught fire and 0% of them have run services with fare paying passengers on board. This fire is a much bigger issue for Vivarail than a Pacer fire would be for Angel/Porterbrook.

This is exactly what the testing phase is for! Much rather have problems like this happen now rather than in service. Best of luck to vivarail in rectifying the issue quickly and getting the unit back on the rails.

Oh dear!!! I actually had high hopes for this concept and still do. However this will not look good by any respects.

I have always said give them a chance to succeed, give them an opportunity to fail. At least the doubters can now say it failed in spectacular style!

Interior doesn't look too badly damaged from that video.

Have to agree, it doesn't look all that damaged and looks mainly to be smoke damage/soot which given that it is diesel powered if any of the diesel caught on fire that is exactly what I would have thought would happen due to diesel being 'sooty'. Hopefully at most the engine/engine raft is damaged and a replacement one fitted.

Not to change the subject but when are the D Stock going to be completely withdrawn from the Underground or have they already been withdrawn

Usual web kangaroo court in full swing, as per usual....

Not surprised, sadly. I feel for Adrian and his team and hope it'll recover from this. Certainly the only visible damage at the moment looks to be to the engine raft area - the bodyside looks superficial with smoke damage to the vinyl.

To be fair, this wasn't the only disruption to XC today and all in all it's been a worse day for them. First of all the SWML was closed between Eastleigh and Basingstoke due to a body found on the line, This at Kenilworth, and a Tresspass near New Street.

A very unfortunate setback, but as others have said hopefully not something that will kill the project off, though it will probably delay its entry into service by a few months at least. With other projects in the pipeline like the 319 Flex, losing time and momentum certainly won't be good news for Vivarail.

Certainly from the video it looks like a fairly minor engine failure which was dealt with promptly. I wonder what form the extinguisher systems on the train take?

That, to me, is the key good news message - if the fire wasn't even severe enough to burn the vinyl it's hardly likely to have done much serious damage.

I was shocked to see the Coventry Telegraph article.

Such a blow for Vivarail, but the staff need commending for dealing with it so well. Hopefully they'll rebuild from the ashes and turn the class 230 into a success story.

What would be the ordinary timescale for returning a fire damaged unit to service?

I'm reminded of the Emperor of Japan's surrender speech in 1945 -

"The situation has developed not necessarily to our advantage"

Isn't this a selling point of the class 230. Swap one engine raft out & replace with another?

Wouldn't that depend on many variables? When a Northern 150 recently caught fire on the Mid-Cheshire line it was terminated at a staffed station while attached to a 156 (meaning plenty of additional fire extinguishers were available) and the fire crew were based 5 minutes away. If it had happened in Delamere Forest when the 150 had been on it's own I imagine the fire damage could have been much worse, even when talking about the same train.

Oh dear the news seems to have reached the Daily Mail Online now :lol:

Alleged comment from Shooter "This is a new train (:lol::lol:) it has only done a few miles. There's a problem (really) and there's no explanation right now"

No comments about it being an old tube train in the article but some people have corrected that in the comments section.
