The fans that tried to get home by train after the Villa game a few weeks ago might not agree with you, epic fail by Southern on that occasion, perhaps sabotaged by disgruntled guards/drivers?

Be interesting to know which units failed, magnificent new 700s or something else? I'm not sure I believe any of the reasons given in any event.

Thameslink traction reliability seems to be a recurring issue worryingly, add fragile infrastructure, militant unions, incompetent GTR management and an indifferent government it's a toxic omnishambles.
At lest one of the two trains are 700s if not both.

Sorry, I'm confused - how can people easily get back from a one-direction move (and why is that bad)?

Or Thameslink to Redhill and GWR to Guildford (depending on time of journey).

DR becomes applicable to delays of 15 minutes or more from Sunday. I imagine that will see a vast surge in claims, assuming people can be bothered, of course. I'll do it only on principle, rather than the financial element, which is nowhere near adequate for the daily grind of failures. I wouldn't be surprised though, if the enhanced compensation will be balanced by a huge increase in response times, because I can't imagine Southern will have provided any extra resources to handle the increased traffic (just like their history of under-resourcing for their train service).
Is that a season ticket? You'd be better off with a Shalford to zones 2-6 as that allows travel via Redhill and First Great Western as they were then, conformed via an email to me, that you could travel on a fast train that didn't stop at Shalford, even though that was your starting station.

Apologies I made some typos I didn't spot. I mean can't get back.

Of course, it's fair to say that those who vow to claim via DR as they want to hit GTR as hard as possible (understandable) may be forgetting/unaware that GTR's revenue goes directly to HMG, and so claiming compensation presumably doesn't have any financial impact on the company (unless they actually do employ more people to handle the flood of claims), but rather on HMG, where the whole circular money-go-round comes to the fore.

At Redhill, on every day that industrial action has led to the running of the special timetable, the 1747 to Tonbridge occupies platform 1A for about 15 minutes during its layover. Every single day, the information screens claim that the sequence and timing of the next three trains will be:
1st 1741 Gatwick Airport Exp. 1741
2nd 1747 Tonbridge Exp. 1747
3rd 1743 Reading Exp. 1743.

As time goes on, every day, this changes to the correct order (and the 1741 is switched to platform 2 anyway). I know that this sort of impossible sequencing/timing is repeated across the network, but how can it be allowed to persist on a repeated basis for so long?! The divided platforms at Redhill are confusing enough for most passengers without imposing this sort of mis-information on the situation.

One of the screens is also located at the boundary of platforms 1A and 1B, where there is also the only movement-sensitive light unit that I have ever known to dim to near-darkness when it detects movement - only at Redhill!!

Indeed, despite having already submitted annual season details and there being a tick-box for just that situation, which appears not to work!! They really cannot do anything right!

Quite, the latest online version of the delay repay form is a definite step back in user friendliness although it looks better (style over substance).
  • Several boxes do not autofill (eg ticket price, ticket no, photocard no.)
  • Won't accept a postcode it doesn't recognise (database out of date)

I have emailed Southern and pointed the above out for what it is worth.

The tick box for previously loaded ticket works for me and I do like the direct payment to PayPal feature.

Someone on here suggested an option to donate to charity and Samaritans was suggested as especially appropriate when a journey is delayed due to someone being struck by a train.

.

There is a poster at Lewes station apologising to football fans for that fiasco, and promising to 'learn lessons.'

I'm not sure why football fans get an apology where workers, students and the elderly don't, for the daily fiascos they contend with. It would be nice if lessons were learned more widely than the Friday night FootExs.

Now that the court action has been thrown out and the strike seems most likely next week, is there any possibility of the days services being announced more than a day in advance?

Does anyone know what the issues are with inputting timetable changes for trains more than a day in advance vers doing it the night before as they currently do?

There won't be services to input bar a skeleton Gatwick Express on ASLEF strike days. There are no technical issues with uploading schedules at any time, but you do need to know what you are running, have resource to plan and bid it, and open yourself for bad news breaking sooner. GTR are deficient in all cases.

On normal days the folks that try and cover work, what used to be called the PM's, have a phone conference meeting about 22.00-23.00 the night before to discuss what can be covered and what cannot be. The emails come to us about 02.00-03.00.

On the ASLEF strike days, well.....

Thanks for that. Interesting.

It's the skeleton Gatwick Express service that will interest some people and on top of that, on conductor strike days, some of those trains stop additionally at Clapham Junction and East Croydon. I wonder if they will do that on the ASLEF strike days? Or will they decide too many people might travel so we'd better do nothing.

I see tomorrow's timetable has been inputted. There may be cancellations in addition to this, which will show up as cancellations but it's been inputted. This is the first day of the working to rule timetable without a conductors strike.

They can't provide replacement taxis but I assume if Thameslink cancel a service due to lack of drivers and it was the last service of the day or last service to make a connection, I assume they would have to provide a taxi.

First Class isn't declassified on overtime ban days, despite the near total shredding of the Brighton - Victoria peak service (no GatEx), for example.

For different reasons, this will go down like a cup of sick with both First and Standard ticket holders.

I was on a train today that said first class had been declassified until further notice. However I don't know when the further notice might be given.

I think this is the problem, the management at GTR are now so busy fire fighting they dont have time to stop and think. This action has now been going on for 8 months, yes ifs affecting the onboard staff but it cant be doing much for the planning teams either.

I posted prematurely. This seems to have changed over the last hour or so.

Website now saying that First is declassified on the Brighton mainline. Other routes will be 'monitored and declassified where necessary.'

I notice that on the Southern website, the map showing which routes are affected is called PLAN B. I assume PLAN A was "win court case"?

No publicity whatsoever from Southern, but they've managed to sneak in the cancellation of off-peak Caterham stoppers via Forest Hill, leaving a 2tph service to London Bridge between NXG and Sydenham and no Southern service at Penge West or Anerley.

Are you sure? Isn't tomorrow the first overtime ban day? Or do you just mean in relation to the schedule for tomorrow (Friday) as it appears right now?

I'm completely confused, and any insight from others would be appreciated.

The recent RMT strike days have had an odd effect on the Brighton to London peak trains. They all run (well, albeit with usual random Southern cancellations), but extra trains seem to be laid on. Trains seem quieter, and as the line is less busy, keep to timetable. Especially those that have stops removed so can get ahead of themselves.

The same has been true for the RMT strike over the last few days (6-8 Dec), which is notable as this is the first which runs parallel with the ASLEF work to rule.

However, tomorrow, Friday 9th Dec, the first day of work to rule but NO RMT strike is almost the worst day I've seen for Brighton to London trains. Almost not peak time trains to Victoria.

I can probably work around this.
But what explanation could there be for this? How can 'Strike and work to rule' be many many many times better than 'work to rule'?

Brighton to London is worse under the overtime ban timetable, but on the other hand there are regular London trains from East and West Coastway, and to Uckfield, that don't run under the RMT strike timetable.

I'm confused why Gatwick Express is unable to operate south of the airport, as I thought we'd established earlier in the thread that GatEx had a dedicated pool of drivers who weren't balloted. Presumably they're declining to work overtime, but of their own volition rather than under union instruction?

Good job you posted that as one might see the notice on one train and think it applies to all as the notice doesn't say, from memory, Brighton main line.

I'm thinking of listing all trains that are not running in addition to what is advertised - so far I've noticed the following:
Peak East Grinstead <--> London Bridge not running (1 exception)
Any Caterham / Tattenham Corner trains that attach / divide at Purley are not doing so. Victoria trains go to Caterham, London Bridge to Tattenham Corner
Very patchy peak service from Redhill am
Reigate / Tonbridge reduced to shuttle service
Caterham & London Bridge daytime services via Sydenham not running
Off peak Epsom <--> Victoria via Hackbridge not running

Feel free to add to this!

Won't these change daily depending on rosters?

After scrolling down the web site's strike page I found the first class information at the bottom - declassified until further notice on the Brighton Main Line. Now - does this include the Redhill route, the Horsham via Gatwick route, the Tonbridge route, the Reigate route, etc., all of which use the BML for part of their routes? Typically imprecise (and therefore useless owing to its confusing vagueness) information yet again from Southern. I suppose that, given the total lack of enforcement for months, it will make no difference anyway.

This from the people who brought us; "There will be fewer trains than usual to London" messages, ignoring the fact that not everyone at 'provincial' stations is travelling to London - why not just; "Fewer trains than usual."? Too many words in some cases, and not enough in others - how difficult can it be to put out simple and genuinely helpful messages? Who runs their communications outfit? Shambolic!

Oops. Good job Twitter doesn't automatically translate to real world actions or there might be a few injured or dead people now!

Caterham stoppers via Sydenham are back this evening with the 1837 from Caterham and the 1906 from London Bridge.

The journey planners have the daytime service back tomorrow.

As I expected, there is an enhanced service to Falmer tonight for the football, though only as far east as Lewes: nothing ventures onto the Seaford branch, so I hope they have some extra buses to augment the Seaford-Lewes bustitution.

Do the football club still pay GTR for these additional trains, hence the extraordinary effort to accommodate them?
