Reformation into a 3 car is more than likely to occur unless a 377 is received from TL in the interim to allow an extended period out of service.

They'd be welcome to one of those appalling 700s, but hopefully not a 377!!

Do we know for a fact that there was a fire and that this isn't simply the new look for 377s under GTR? Were there any journalists there this morning and a ribbon being cut? :)

Indeed it was, it was GTRs new heating system for 377s.

Latest special notice is asking for all Driessen and Ebay hand driers to be isolated. This is basically all 171, all 377 excluding the /3,6,7 and 101-109.

ebay hand dryers? Do bombardier get the hand driers for their electrostar and turbostar units from ebay?

Also does anyone know if 377442 is still stabled at Eastbourne sidings?

Do on-board things like hand dryers when onboard a train come under PAT testting regs?

PAT testting regs?

No such thing,

http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/faq-portable-appliance-testing.htm said:
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition. However, the Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (ie they don't make inspection or testing of electrical appliances a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually).

The industry has certainly done a good job of making people feel that there's a requirement to get an electrician to do even the most basic work, and pay for a certificate.

It almost looks like an attempt to form a cartel, and make the same money as you'd pay for a Gas Date engineer issuing a Gas Safety certificate.

Yes, currently in siding number 4. I've got no idea when they intend to move it (they'll probably need the siding capacity over the weekend, so I'd imagine either tonight, tomorrow or early Saturday morning).

I run discos as a hobby. In order for my liability insurance to be valid I have to demonstrate my equipment is to safe standards, so yes in my case PAT test certificate is required. Some venues wont even let me use my kit unless I have valid PAT and PLI certificates. At the end of the day its safety and mitigating risks. Incorrect fuses, incorrectly rated or damaged cables can lead to fires so safety checks are prevention too.

As for gas regulations If you really think there is a cartel controlling safety then I hope you dont have any gas appliances in your property....

Wait, 377442 is legitimately the unit involved in the fire?! I assumed that was a joke.

All the talk of the Wessies revenge is true! :o

So did I, until I saw it there today!

You can never get rid of the 442s!

Been passing it often since the incident. I was working that day and got stopped at Pevensey for 17mins whilst they moved it to the sidings. It was propelled into Siding 4!

But yes it is indeed 7442!

Ah yes, I watched that movement on OTT (and posted about it on here). As I said earlier, I can't imagine it still being there over the weekend - more units berth in the sidings over weekend periods compared to during the week.

I hope to see it move to selhurst or lovers walk. Presumably it'll be dragged by another unit if there are electrical problems with it

If you work in the train planning Department maybe you could make miracles happen :P

Sadly, I don't. However, I could take a leaf out of Charles Horton's book and, let's say, have it off with a higher being in order to get his (my) way! :D;):D;) (different subject, I know).

My parents run a firm that do quality control checks on gas servicing for local authorities, housing associations etc.

You don't want to know the quality of work and glaring safety risks from Gas Safe engineers, or what Gas Safe do and say to excuse their members. But that's a topic of conversation for another thread and forum.

Gas safety is vital, but don't think that engineers are all good at their job!

Yes, electrical safety is important too and I said the cartel but because the industry has worked hard to have similar requirements, and in many ways has succeeded as mentioned.

I wouldn't rewire a home or install new sockets etc, but I can and would change a light switch or ceiling rose etc. I've had basic training, but cannot issue a certificate as I'd have to pay to become qualified.

Assuming only one carriage is unservicable, why can't it be shunted out of the unit at Eastbourne, leaving a 3-car set in service immediately and allowing for the damaged vehicle to be repaired? That way, the TOC is only 1 carriage down, not 1 unit down.

Perhaps there is the possibility that the adjacent vehicle has suffered at least smoke damage also?

As I posted up-thread, a problem in the toilet module was one of my very brief points of speculation. On further thought, there are several signs that the fire may have started in the toilet. The door is closed when it should have been opened during evacuation, which would point to air pressure from within to slam it shut (or someone closing it to contain a fire). Smoke or gas from a ceiling HVAC fire spreading from the saloon might push it the other way. More pertinently, the control panel cupboard has lost its door, which would require considerable effort as it is locked shut and designed to self-close towards the module, yet the area around it does not show any sign of forced opening with something like a crowbar. This implies considerable heat and force pushing from inside the toilet walls. All speculation but a fire in the toilet might be a feasible suggestion!

It should read "Evac" dryers.

And yet, despite it all, those AstroTurf seats still look undamaged! <D

Interesting post by the way, it will be interesting to see if you are right on this being the seat of the fire on this unit.

Is it possible to see the control panel cupboard door in that picture? Looking at the damage I would say that the fire was somewhere in the ceiling, the visible outer walls of the toilet seem relatively undamaged. The toilet door itself is a normal inward opening hinged door so it may well have been closed and remained closed for the duration if it was unoccupied at the time.

A brief tweet on the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service website reports that they attended a fire "....in the roof of a train. Cause was accidental."

So it looks as though the toilet was probably not the origin of the fire.
