The latest I'm hearing is that a 377 (not sure of the unit number) caught fire at Eastbourne, platform 3, earlier on this morning. Apparently the burning smelt as if it had something to do with the electrics.

I also heard a rumour (I'm not sure of the accuracy of it) that the fire service wanted to cut the roof off of the unit to investigate further. Platform 3 still remains shut, so I'm not sure if that is actually happening.

EDIT: the units involved were meant to be operating 2D89 (Eastbourne-Hastings).

Looks nasty, certainly not a small fire. Hope anyone involved or on the train is alright

Do 377s have much electronics housed in that area?

Will the coach likely be written off?

I wonder what the driver saw in the cab when presumably the computer went a bit mad.. or did it just all cut out?

The air conditioning is in the roof isn't it?

Looks like the TOSL coach, toilet is at the front on the right.

Also a NR mpv caught fire this morning at Sevenoaks blocking the line for 3 hours.

Has there been a surge in the amount of rolling stock catching fire (for whatever reason) or is it just more being posted in the forums atm?

Obviously a fire alarm to start with but yea, I suspect the desk and TMS (377s have those don't they?) would have been a christmas tree of fault lights and errors.

I wonder if what was meant is did the fire crews need cut away some of the interior roof panels so as to access the heart of the fire, I could well be wrong but it appears a lot of panelling has been removed? it could of course have just melted if the heat was so intense.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to remove this train from platform 3?

No I believe the intention is to leave it there as a memorial to the folly of man thinking that they could harness such powers as electricity.

What i mean is maybe itll be dragged to selhurst or something for repairs ;) Maybe a rail ops group 37? That would be awesome

Ah, that probably is the case. I imagine any of the further investigations will be done at Lovers/Selhurst.

Does the damage go much further behind the place where the person taking the photo was standing?

Your signature has a certain oblique irony now!

If I was to be superstitious, I would suggest some sort of link between the cremation of 377 442 the removal of the 442s (perhaps some sort of spontaneous combustion protest?). :D;)

I thought that was a joke, rather than that actually being the unit number?

A 4 car 377 (headcode 5F18) has just entered platform 3 at Eastbourne, presumably to commence the rescue process.

This will most likely cause some problems in the area as there is already a 171 sitting at the buffer stops on this platform, as well as the 8 car 377 incident train - the last 2 coaches of 5F18 will be hanging off the platform, therefore blocking at least one set of points.

EDIT: 1F33 is being held at Pevensey & Westham and 2D27 at Polegate whilst the above is completed (God knows how long it will take - mind you, it's better to do it now as opposed to the evening peak).
It's just gone into Eastbourne Sidings.

The unfortunate reality is this level of damage could be caused simply by the motor insulation failing on the circulation fan, however equally possible to have been caused by the roof heater in the module. Reformation into a 3 car is more than likely to occur unless a 377 is received from TL in the interim to allow an extended period out of service.

This is the MOSL - the small toilet is in the MOSL.

The PTOSL holds the disabled toilet

Yes, the Mitrac TMS would probably have gone berserk, quite possibly starting with fire alarms but not necessarily (could also have been MCB trips, toilet module failure, load shedding... you name it, really, with an incident of that scale).

I should think it is highly unlikely that a 37 will be used, though it may well end up at Selhurst, at least for assessment.

It could well be the case, but I'm not in a position to check right now.

To be fair there is a bigger range of possible causes, including potential problems in the toilet module itself. Even some door components could cause a chain reaction by burning out in just the wrong way, though I think it is unlikely here. I was wondering about the roof HVAC though. Anyway, no more speculation from me!

Also, of course, the toilet module is on the left, not the right.
