Oh I can assure you they do on locos where the ASL is isolated. Just keep it under your hat

Best hope there is no manager with a laptop waiting to download the OTMR....

Pretty sure LM 172s reach 100mph between Dorridge and Stratford-upon-Avon. 170s get up to 100mph every day between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Edinburgh - Aberdeen and even Highland Main Line and I think Birmingham - Derby. Northern 319s don't have any routes for more than 90mph currently. None of the stock that's capable of 140mph reaches that with the obvious exception of 395/373/374.

I have been on one doing 98 mph on the Birmingham - Solihull -Stratford Upon Avon semi-fasts. These are booked non-stop between Dorridge & Stratford Parkway.

It's just reminded me that from speaking to an LM driver (friend if a friend) back when the 172s were due to come into service, part of the training drivers had to undertake as part of 'passing out' on the traction included this stretch because of it being 100mph

My mate has done the tonne in a 319 whilst training drivers between South Parkway and Crewe. Guess that doesn't count. Do they go that fast between Wigan and Preston, am thinking not because of the stations they stop at?

Pre-Frankenstein 458s only reached 100mph if they were going to Bournemouth for works. It's fairly unusual for them to reach 75 even now; except on empties (although it will get a bit more common once they start doing the Reading road)
450s don't reach 100 that often either; as a large proportion of the SWML is slower than that and most of the services that do reach 100 routinely are 444s anyway. It does happen on a daily basis; but probably not as often as a lot of people think.
On the Underground 1995 stock is a country mile from 62mph most of the time; I believe the top speed on the Northern line is 35 but I could be wrong.
171s don't see 100 that often either
378s reaching their top speed of 75
The only possibility I think for this to occur is empties between New Cross Gate/Silwood and West Croydon.

Class 450's being used on the Waterloo - Reading route, which barely get above 70mph.

As long as it is seen to be corrected they are normally ok with it but may have a quiet word. It's only if it goes to 111mph or above as this then marks as a hazard/fault on the remote monitoring at Romford & Crown Point.

Just about any unit on the Brockenhurst-Lymington Pier runs won't get anywhere near their max speed

Not even on a non stop Hooton-Bache?

Bache-Hooton was raised fairly recently, but only to 70mph (from 60).
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The ATW loco-hauled sets can reach 125mph (actually not 100% sure the DVT might be 110 only), but doubt they ever do.

Nothing higher than 90mph on Holyhead-Cardiff/Manchester.
The LHCS also takes loco differentials which limits speeds Chester-Craven Arms compared to DMUs.

ATW 175s get to 100mph only between Sandbach and Stockport on Cardiff-Manchester, and a short section through Pyle in South Wales.

Maximum linespeed even on the fasts is 70mph on this section.

Southern 377s (excluding those that go up the WCML) never make 100mph.

With the new signalling, Northern Line current attains 50 mph in various places.

Under the old signalling, the highest permitted speed was 45 mph, between East Finchley and High Barnet, however it wasn't uncommon for trains to reach 60 mph or more on the downhill run from High Barnet to Totteridge - unofficially of course - and normally accompanied by a beautiful smell of burning brakes after stopping at Totteridge!

Surprised the 140mph-capable Class 91 and Class 390 trains haven't been mentioned.

They were, on page 2!

In regards to the 450s, there's still a fair number of services that can and should hit a ton. The Waterloo - pompey via eastleigh and Poole stopping services can.

I know up and down the country 158s hit 90, but do GWR services get there every day? I'm not sure on linespeed between bath and Cardiff.

Do the 483s count? Have they been re-geared?

Wonder how fast a 139 can go? <D

I don't know, but I would love to find out <D

Not quite the same, but a 170 on a Glasgow-Alloa will (probably) never reach 100mph as the service is timed for a 156.

It doesn't matter what it is timed for - it can still do whatever speed the traction and linespeed permit. If this means going quicker than a 156 can achieve due to linespeed, the service may just end up running slightly early if timed for a lower speed

If that's an overcrowded Pacer service maybe it gets as fast as a Pacer can with a crush loading - I don't think they can get to 75mph if they are overloaded!

Yeah that was my thinking. Especially during leaf fall season. It's not a service I normally get, I do sometimes catch the service the stock forms heading back out of Lime Street.

Indeed or it can make up late running by running at over 75mph.

I suspect the 314s on the Cathcart Circle rarely reach 30mph. Only opportunity to stretch their legs is between Whitecraigs and Neilston or the occasional sortie on the Inverclyde lines.

390002 reached (IIRC) 144.6 on test between Nuneaton and Rugby. It would have gone quicker but we ran out of room...

If they ever do get passed for 140 (unlikely I assume!), they'll need to hit 154mph on test won't they?
