If petrol stations are so worried about this then why don't they make everyone either pay first before filling or pay using a card or app at the pump?

Why not just have raising bollards blocking the vehicles in which are activated when the pump nozzle is lifted off the mount and only retracted once the payment has been made?

They can only deduct at most 10% (at a time), and the remaining wage must not fall below the minimum wage.
https://www.gov.uk/understanding-your-pay/deductions-from-your-pay

This is not correct as the link states

"A deduction can’t normally reduce your pay below the National Minimum Wage even if you agree to it, except if the deduction is for:

something you’ve done and your contract says you’re liable for it, eg a shortfall in your till if you work in a shop"

Initial cost
On going maintenance cost
lack of space
Position of bollards need to allow larger vehicles which smaller vehicles maybe able to get out of.

Or someone may end up stopping over a bollard or another car nearby may be over them. Never going to happen!

Indeed, more hassle than its worth. Easiest solution would be to require payment before filling as someone previously said. However this would take a shift in public mentality.

We had a local garage swap to pay before you fill after a spate of thefts. Over the next few months their takings fell 30% as less people used it. The garage then went back to the normal fill before you pay and all went back to normal.

This new contract also states that short notice overtime is mandatory.

That part isn't that unusual.

Did that mean you had to pay by card? If not how did they ensure the amount of petrol taken equalled the amount paid for - it's very easy to go a little over or under if you try to take a very specific amount.

At many petrol stations you can type in how much you'd like to fill up and it will stop automatically.

I used it once, cash, and just made sure I didn't go over. However I was also one of those that didn't go back to the garage under that system. I resented standing in a que with two or three people in front who were doing their weekly shop.

Just about every filling station in America has pay before you fill. Even if you pay cash they can programme the pump to only dispense a measured amount of fuel.

I'm actually very keen on Shell's way of paying using PayPal scanning a code, which is quite ironic seeing as it's the company in question.

I have done Pay@Pump once and it took a pre-auth of the card (up to £90 or something) and then naturally charged what you'd actually used

I use it quite regularly and it always states £99 on the machines I use.
