Severn Valley Railway day trip

Hi all,

I'm planning a day trip to the Severn Valley Railway and I'm looking for any tips or suggestions to make the most of the day, especially which of the stations are worth stopping at and a list of the attractions along the line.

I'd also appreciate any suggestions for overnight accommodation as close to the railway as possible, possibly in Kidderminster as I will be arriving in the area at the mainline station, but open to suggestions near any of the stations on the line.

I'm thinking about arriving in Kidderminster late morning, leaving my luggage at the accommodation before visiting the railway, staying overnight before travelling onwards the following morning.

Finally, any recommendations for places to eat or drink nearby?

There is the Engine House at Highley - a small museum, also with a gift shop & restaurant (not tried the food myself).

All the stations have a bit of character - mostly typical GWR style stations for branch / secondary lines. Scenery is mostly good, with views of the River Severn (except where hidden by trees.) If you go at this time of year, there are only 6 trains per day each way at weekends, so you may have some longish waits if you want to alight & take photos at intermediate stations.

Both Bridgnorth & Kidderminster stations are lonigsh walks from their town centres.

You may see a few wild animals when you pass the country park between Kidderminster & Bewdley.

The line is one of my favourites!

If you can wait until the start of November the SVR are running a mini steam gala using all of the available home fleet and a couple of guest loco's.

As Bevan has already stated the Engine House is excellent and in addition to half a dozen loco's also houses a Royal Mail sorting carriage and a vehicle from the Royal train.

There is a pub on the station at Bridgnorth which is excellent but I'm not aware that it sells food.

The food at the Engine House is normally pretty good but at the steam gala last week it was rather disappointing. There is a pub just below the station at Highley and I'm now tempted to try that when I visit the line at the start of November.

There is also a pub at Arley (it might be called the Ship) but it's very small and I'm not sure that it serves food.

The Harbour? Featured on a forum meet way back when for the Bridgnorth Beer Festival and then at least (September 2013) did serve food.

The pub at Bridgnorth only does your typical bar snacks, however there is a cafe (I'm presuming associated with the SVR) just outside the station building, again however those observations are from a while ago!

Yes, with quite a big garden out behind.

Is this a family trip? The SVR is superb coming second only to the NYMR.
