The way someone explained it me was this. Back when milk snatching Maggie was still prime minister, the conservatives realized they could still influence society and the economy, even if or when they lost a general election, so they prepared for it. The way they did it was to get enough of their own peopel into the labour party NEC. This gathered momentum and then Tony Blair appeared. It's been suggested many times all over the place that he was a tory in the wrong coloured tie. He was never a true labour man, and to be fair on the bloke, I don't think he pretended to be. The labour party became "New Labour" and it got into big money and basically became a watered down version of the conserviative party.
Neil Kinnock was never a true labour man either, and the labour party lost it's way a bit. He never even supported the miners. And whatever you might think or say about Scargill, he was more of a socialist than Kinnock. Shame he didn't lead the party.
As for more recent times, Milliband is probably a nice enough fella, but really, labour with him at the helm was never an effective opposition party, so it made labour a waste of time, and even worse, it left the way oopen for the conservatives to run riot and asset strip the country even more.
I think Corbyn is the only true labour (as compared to 'new labour') canditate, (and the only hope we've got, whether you realize it or not) so I'm glad he's the leader. At least he asks the right questions and he isn't corruptible (we hope)
