So then, the iPhone 7 (and airbuds). What do you all make of it?
It's not a bad phone, but I don't get excited about iPhone launches like I used to. My parents bought me a 3GS on PAYG a few months after it came out, and I got a 5S on contract before starting uni a couple of years ago. A couple of weeks ago, I got a Samsung Galaxy S7 and it really is a fantastic phone. There's the odd feature missing in apps compared to iOS, but this is the fault of the app developers and not the phone.
My thoughts on the new features:
-Camera- The whole 12MP and bigger pixel thing is Samsung's idea, and the two lense idea has already been implemented this year on the LG G5. The portrait thing is nice, but it's the only original idea.
-Water/dust proofing- my S7 has this and the S5 had this a couple of years ago. Why has it taken Apple two years to sort this.
-Processor/GPU- Impressive stuff to have four cores, two powerful and two efficient to save battery on lighter tasks such as checking email. I'm also impressed with the improvements since the original iPhone (CPU 120x more powerful, GPU 240x more powerful)
-Stereo front facing speakers- Great idea and the lack of them on the S7 was criticized in reviews.
-Storage- At last, a 32 GB base model! My 5S was 16 GB and once you took away the storage used by the OS, apps and a small amount of music, I had about a GB left for photos. With the newer iPhones having a higher megapixel camera and 4K video recording, more storage is definitely needed. The 256 GB option is good to see, although very pricey (£919 for a 7 Plus of that size!)
-Screen- Disappointing. My S7 has a Quad HD (2K in other words) OLED screen that looks gorgeous. Why does the standard iPhone still only have a 720p screen and the 7 Plus a Full HD screen? At these price points, I would expect a 2k screen on the iPhone 7 and a 4K screen on the iPhone 7 Plus.
-Lack of headphone flawed- I can see what they are trying to achieve, but not being able to listen to music and charge the phone is a big oversight (I often did it while sat at my desk at uni and it may be needed even with the better battery life of the iPhone 7)
Overall, it's far from a bad phone but it hasn't blown me away like the new iPhone's used to.
In other news, I'm now on EE and I was very impressed yesterday as I did four speed tests, all of which I got over 65 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. Of the four locations I tested, three of them don't have 4G on Three and two of them don't even have 3G on O2 and Vodafone, needless to say I am very pleased with EE's network. They aren't perfect everywhere as no network is and I know of a few places where EE has a weak signal and O2 and Vodafone have a good 4G signal, but overall, they sure are the best!
Finally, I have just applied a tech21 Impact Shield screen protector to my Samsung Galaxy S7 and I am very disappointed. It came off the screen as I removed tab 2 (find the application video on YouTube to understand what I'm on about here) and now it's on, there are loads of marks on it and the screen looks nowhere near as clear as it used to and there's a strange RGB dot effect (if that makes any sense!) as well. I'll leave it on for a day or two but I think I'll be taking it off after that. What a waste of £20!
