I merely queried whether these sorts of incidents MIGHT be a catalyst for NR to consider such a ban.

Probably not. As has been said before, they can ban ladders but they'd be unable to enforce a blanket ban. Just think about it.

Banning photographers and heritage railtours is a massive over reaction.

What we do need is the rest of the enthusiast communioty too be proactive - especially at unmanned stations - and have words with these people and also take a giood picture of them and report them to BTP.

In fact I know some of you like to view places like flikr too so if you see photos like the one this person took - comment on it and report the user to the authorities.
No one wants an accident but these thigns happen far too often without people reporting those responsible and it needs to be stopped including the rail press being very proactive about this in every issue the print too.

You can't Blanket ban ladders or any tool(other than the Photographer) just because a few have been stupid with them. Otherwise you would have to prevent Station preservation groups from maintaining premises.

What do you say to ladies who claim they have a ladder in their tights..

What about gents with ladders in their tights?

If one buys a ladder from B&Q and plans to get the train home, how does a ladder ban affect them?

Someone did post that there is a ban on metal ladders on stations where there is overhead lines, I don't know if that is correct but if not there should be unless the line is under possession.

Agreed. Report anything like this to BTP and, if possible, Network Rail.

It is. Otherwise I wouldn't have said it. Fibreglass or wooden ladders are absolutely fine, but not metal ones. I've stopped contractors from working when they've turned up with them.

This person will probably one of those who shouts at other visitors at depot open days that they are in their picture, or throws abuse if someone dares get in their way of having the 'perfect' shot

In fairness it is a bit annoying when some git stands in front if your camera and isn't doing anything.

I can't believe you are arguing with such a post and are actually seemingly defending such people! Well, that is your right, but I'm 100% with kite159 on this one!

Move a couple of feet left or right.

Or "excuse me".

No excuse for shouting abuse, or even worse, swearing.

Not always possible.

I wouldn't and I don't swear at people who do this but I don't particularly care if people choose to swear as it helps me get a clear shot. Having said that, I've only seen it happen once.

Obviously that means I think the chap on the ladder was right to use the ladder because why not?

Anyway we don't know if the chap at the centre of laddergate actually does swear at other people so this conversation is a complete waste of time. I don't particularly care what your stance is on people asking others to move out the way for photographs because the main topic of the thread was a photographer foolishly using a ladder on a station platform, not a photographer asking others to move out the way. The speculation is pointless, let's just comment on what we know.

Bit of a silly argument if I'm honest. Station preservation groups and staff have a genuine reason to use ladders on station premises. Joe Public does not. Why the hell would you need to set up a ladder on a platform if you are not a trained member of staff or a volunteer?

For crying out loud it's just a train!

I know, which is why I don't condone using stepladders to get pictures on stations.

Just to remind you, I got to open days to photograph locomotives and not people. Just a thought!

Shall we get this back on topic? This chap could be anything really, all we know is that he's a tw*t who used a stepladder in a dangerous location to get a photo of a train. Does this really warrant eight pages of discussion? Anyway, what more needs to be said?

Fibreglass and wood as long as they don't gave metal reinforcement down the sides

Yes but those open days are not organised just for you are they? Does it really matter if your picture of a loco also includes a random individual? Just a thought!

Well actually I suggest you read my post again, specifically the bit about where people are stood in front of the camera.

If there is someone in shot in the background, I don't care. It's when they stand in front of the loco that it becomes an issue.

Case in point:

28261974500_bfe51dfa0a_z.jpg

27944475744_de316686cb_z.jpg

In all of these photos, there are people in view. Did I deem it to be a problem at the time and did I complain? No, because they're not blocking the camera. There is a difference between someone being in the background and someone blocking your shot. Sometimes I actually like having people in the photo (staff etc), it gives it added interest.

I suspect we won't ever agree on this point, so can we get back on topic now please?

Some people (like me) can't see what all the fuss is about with a piece of machinery. Some treat it like a life or death situation (OK, slight exaggeration). Each to their own. No problem as long as all interactions are amicable.

Now idiots using ladders near OHLEs ...

I was saying this earlier and some users ignored it.

What more is there to say? People who do this are tango whiskey alpha tangos and should be reported. Have BTP seen the picture on twitter?

I wouldn't be too optimistic about BTP taking any action in this case, as this is the same organisation who chose to turn a blind eye to the many clearly identifiable people who trespassed on the ECML to see Flying Scotsman a few months ago.
