Plan was for tonight's sleeper to start Truro, running ECS down from Laira / Plymouth although that may well change.

Train running normally apart from missing St Erth stop so assume being worked by last night's Loco & Stock. Last nights 1C99 (57605) due to run as 5Z70 0955 Plymouth to O.O.Commo but cancelled due brake problems, Reinstated to leave at 1739 and en route.

How close to the boundary fence are the signalling data and electrical cables likely to be?

LBC radio travel updates reporting that GWR and Cross Country are not running between St Erth and St Ives.

Westcountry News were telling people yesterday at 6pm that the Crosscountry service to St Ives was suspended due to the fire as priority was to reopen the main line....

Does this forum think that the Friday night sleeper from PAD to PNZ will be affected by this? Should all be sorted by then, right? Right?!

1C99 Sleeper last night with 57605 changed trains at Plymouth. Worked forward from Plymouth (no sleepers obviously) by XC VOYAGER to Truro where it terminated. The Voyager was going down from Laira to Truro to start 1S47 Penzance to Glasgow from there.

Actually it was used to start 1S43 06:28 Penzance to Glasgow from Truro; 1S47 is formed of the unit that worked down on a later 1C09 06:28 Plymouth - Truro.

The line was open for much of yesterday but closed again early hours today due to another fire breaking out. There were just a few odd trains ran through this morning after a second re-opening and which I have found on RTT.
The first one was a 5Z70 Penzance to Plymouth XC Voyager.

The line was opened last night for a while but the fire then spread to near some fuel lines nearby so line closed. Reopened for ecs workings only this morning and now service trains. Down sleeper with 605 operated to Truro then ecs to LA with myself and others sent from Long Rock to prep our baby for tonight. I do not know where it is intended to start it from tonight. Judging from current situation, it will be normal sleeper service Thursday and hopefully full normal service by the time the loco hauled Saturday trains run.

Who on earth thought it was a good idea to build a recycling plant next to an operational railway? And what checks do such plants have to go through to minimise the risk associated with such fires as this?

Didn't 1C99 last night change trains at Plymouth and worked forward (still as 1C99) as far as Truro by a XC Voyager which was going to work a XC Penzance to Glasgow starting from Truro
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

1A40 Loco & stock at Penzance for tonight. Ran 15+53 ECS from Plymouth.

Ex-railway land is in main industrial waste land, and without significant investment by property developers, only industrial businesses set up there.
The same with roads.
Who allowed the scrap yard under the M1?

Having spent time visiting the Box overlooking this site, I don't think it was built as a recycling centre, but was an old unit that was now being used as a used tyre recycling unit.

The site used to be a scrapyard, which occupied the approach road as well as the buildings that have been destroyed. It was where I brought the only car I ever scrapped, in 1998, for which I had to hand over a tenner for them to take it off my hands, then go back to Penzance on the bus for a single fare of £2.40. which outraged me (it was 1998!). The St Erth Recycling Centre of local common parlance is the other side of the railway line, owned by Cornwall Council and operated under licence by SITA. You can actually bring tyres there, at a cost of £3.40 each I believe - I was only looking at their charges on my regular weekly visit on Sunday. The number of tyres kept there at any one time is limited by the confined space allocated, but I imagine they'll be looking at that very closely in future!

Environmental permits are required to recycle tyres and the penalties for not complying with them or not having one can be quite severe.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-23463210

BBC News said:
Two company directors have each been jailed for six months for storing more than 5,500 tonnes of waste tyres without a permit at a factory where a fire burned for three weeks.

...

The cost of the blaze and removing all the tyres is estimated at £2.6m.
Judge Paul Thomas said: "Both of you bore onerous responsibilities, both of you plead ignorance, ignorance of course is no excuse, in offence it's an aggravating feature.
"Only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified. There is no room for recklessness in this sphere."

The fire brigade still need access to the fire site across the line between St Erth and Lelant Saltings; they granted a temporary opening to allow a unit on to the branch to run Saltings - St Ives.
