I presume you also get into the difficulties of the train shed being a listed building, if you were to attach them to it directly?

Be interesting to see how it is installed at Temple Meads then.
The wires are fixed to the station structure in both halves of Lime St.
You hardly notice the electrification installation inside the terminal.
The wires are suspended from horizontal bars which themselves are suspended from the roof - a curious mix of portal and headspan.
I presume it dates from the original electrification c1961.

Newcastle Central's headspans are practically invisible in most photos of the platform areas, and are generally fastened to existing columns by simple straps.

Another example of a discrete installation in a Grade 1 listed building, I expect Bristol should be fairly straightforward...

York also, but outside the trainshed is a clutter of stanchions closer together than usual due to the extreme curvature at this location.

*Lots of goodwill and assistance again from contractor's staff, but station management now saying that 'publishing' photographs or video on the Internet is outwith the 'personal use' referred to in the 'Guidelines for Enthusiasts' and will require formal clearance from ScotRail Customer Relations.

I saw at least 3 others taking photographs yesterday, including one for the scot-rail.co.uk website and whose photographs were put online last night.

Queen Street tunnel works completed early for passengers

Downloads

Friday 5 Aug 2016

Scotland
Transport Minister Humza Yousaf joined engineers today (Friday, August 5) to see the early completion of the £60m project to refurbish and upgrade the kilometre-long Glasgow Queen Street tunnel.

Over the last 20 weeks engineers have been working around-the-clock to renew 1,800m of concrete slab track and install more than 4,000m of new rails through the structure.

Station platforms and track layouts within Queen Street have also been extended and altered as part of the project, and both the tunnel and station have been prepared for the electrification of the main Glasgow-Edinburgh line next year.

Since the high level station closed on March 20, nearly 3,000 engineers have worked over half-a-million hours to complete the project by today – nearly three days ahead of schedule – and train services will be reintroduced over this weekend.

The Transport Minister helped tighten the final bolts on the new slab-track inside the tunnel and met with customer service staff who have kept customers moving during the five months of work.

Mr Yousaf said: “I am pleased to see the work on the Queen Street tunnel completed ahead of schedule and on-budget. This has been an unprecedented project, both in engineering terms and in the scale of the operation required to keep people moving and services diverted via the underground platforms during the works.

“This is a key milestone in our programme of investment for Scotland’s railways and literally paves the way for the introduction of a new generation of electric trains.

“I would like to congratulate the ScotRail-Network Rail Alliance on a successful job, and the hundreds of men and women who have worked day and night to deliver the hugely ambitious project. I would also like to thank the passengers who have had to alter their plans for the duration of these works for their patience.”

Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance, said: “The successful, early delivery of this project will allow us to introduce faster, longer and greener trains on the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line – delivering thousands of extra seats, shorter journey times and improved accessibility for customers.

“This was a massive engineering challenge and it was only through the careful planning and professional delivery of the project team that we have been able to complete this vital investment in Scotland’s railway ahead of schedule.

“I would also like to thank all of our customers who have shown great patience and understanding during the last five months.”

With the tunnel works complete, most services will return to normal frequency, with some minor changes to train times and station stops on some lines. Passengers can check their journey at www.scotrail.co.uk or via the ScotRail app.

The tunnel renewal has been delivered by engineers working on the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) to electrify the main Edinburgh-Glasgow, via Falkirk High, line.

The return of trains to Queen Street high level paves the way for the continued enhancement of the line which will be electrified in 2017 with a new fleet of 70 Hitachi Class 385 electric trains rolled out on a number of routes, including Edinburgh-Glasgow, from autumn 2017.

Over the next three years, works will continue within Glasgow Queen Street as engineers extend the station out towards George Square and create a new concourse and passenger facilities.

The new trains, and station remodelling works, will allow ScotRail to run services of up to eight carriages on the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line from the end of 2018.

The Scottish Government’s investment in the redeveloped Glasgow Queen Street station, which is due to be completed in 2019, will see the station transformed into a modern facility with increased concourse space, improved accessibility and remodelled passenger facilities.

The station has not reopened today, just passed through it a couple of hours ago. Took a last minute trip today to clear a couple of very rare curves for passenger use.

I wonder whether despite the delays, they couldn't get Queen Street to Springburn wired quickly to allow the Cumbernauld trains to take the direct route instead of going via Bellgrove and having to reverse.

I was up there a few days ago but won't publish the pictures until station opening. Needless to say I'm impressed and although the OHLE Headspan masts do stand out on the platform, the use of headspans does help to keep the station feeling light bright and airy.

Yes it did.

The 1000, 1030, 1100, and 1130 GLQ - EDB all used the high level platforms today.

I was wondering that when I was in Glasgow earlier this week - are there any plans to reroute the majority of Stepps line services back into High Level when it gets juiced or will it remain the way it is now? I must say, the route from Low Level via Duke Street up to Springburn and the subsequent reversal out towards Stepps seems to take excruciatingly long!

Perhaps a useful trick would be Cumbernauld - Springburn - Queen Street high level, an a circular service around Queen Street Low Level - Springburn - Anniesland - Queen Street Low Level? Such a circular service would work well if one round trip takes just under 20, 30 or 60 minutes!

They've fallen out of favour with the industry though, you want an out and back turn with a bit of TT padding at the destination so late arrival of the out doesn't mean a late start and arrival for the back.

I suspected as much, perhaps something like Dumbarton - Queen Street low level - Springburn - Anniesland?

Thanks for reporting that - I had plans for catching what I thought would be the first Edinburgh train leaving from the High level tomorrow. Now I get to have a longer lie. :)

By the way, your latest update is dated 23rd August - is that a way of confusing Network Rail's video police? :D
 Just lousy typing. Add that to the long list of mishaps.
Fixed now thanks!

The 1531 Glasgow QS to Edinburgh went from the low level, as I was on it.
The High level station was empty at 1240, so it must of been open for a couple of hours only!

Yeah, it was only the 4 services quoted (and their incoming arrivals from EDB) that were planned to operate to/from high level. From the 1200 onwards they reverted to the low level platforms.

It's definitely planned for when EGIP is done, I was wondering if despite the delays they couldn't get this bit done quickly to get that small but welcome gain, now that the tunnel, which was surely the hardest part, is done.

Cheers for that, had I got the earlier train I would have missed the rare curves!!

The Cowlairs chord and the through lines at Springburn are already wired.

What's the reason for those four trains (and only those four) using the high-level platforms?

Cumbernauld trains start from destinations West of Glasgow and are part of the Low level timetable. So there are no plans for High level timetable trains to Cumbernauld till the trains onwards to Falikrk Grahamston start. That not for quite a while yet.

A slght problem of no Overhead Wires between Cumbernauld and Falkirk Grahamston might just have something to do with it. In fact the contract to install them has yet to be awarded.

Although Queen Street High level has now got Wires. They have not yet got any power. With bits of wiring still to be completed between Queen Street and the feeder station. Power probably won't make it into Queen Street much before December 2016, when driver training runs start.

Slight problem there may be no Overhead lines between Cowlairs junction and Anniesland. With major work needed to lift bridges that won't happen any time soon.

I was under the impression that all the suburban lines out of Queen Street high level were up for electrification sooner or later, hence there would be a possibility of new services being created. Apart from electrification, I'd have thought that Cowlairs junctions can be quite nasty for pathing if you introduced services cutting across from Ashfield-Springburn amongst the regular traffic.

I obviously only meant the Cumbernauld terminators, not the ones that go on to Falkirk.

When I passed a month ago, the high level to Springburn curve appeared fully wired already.
