What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I did a mini bash myself on this route on Tuesday - albeit it was from the Swansea/Abertawe end.

1821 SWA - Pantyffynnon, then bus to Pontarddulais for the 2039 Cardiff Central via Swansea District Railway. I got in the Hendy Junction - Briton Ferry side of the triangle.

25/07/2016 - Tech Won't Be Outdone

You won't believe it, but I've gone for something other than a musical reference this time! This week [next week I'm not out on Monday, stay tuned! - Ed] I reference to Dynasty Warriors 3, a PlayStation 2 game, the series based on The Three Kingdoms. It's a lot to go into here, so let's dive straight to the point. During battle, morale boosts come from fellow warriors and the commander in the form of a rally, my favourite of which is "We mustn't be outdone, fight harder!" and yes, I do appreciate you'll have needed to have played the game to truely get the reference. Much in the way one of my favourite pieces of music comes from Dynasty Tactics 2, but without playing the game it's not so relatable if that makes sense.

Anyway, back to the latest entry of my autobiography [aren't I good to you all, saving you buying it when it comes out in hardback! - Ed] and I was off on another trip. I was seriously into shack scoring, but I also wanted to get the red pen out too. This was proving difficult to do without spending a fortune, as within my stomping grounds there was not much left to get in terms of winners. 4 Midland Metro trams, several Chiltern needs and nothing else in the Midlands, save for 5 166s which have potential to turn up on the 0821 Paddington to Hereford and 12:bungle return. After that, I'd have to go to Crewe for hourly EMT services, and even then there's only a handful of 153s and 156s I need with them, so not entirely likely to turn up. Shacks wise, however, I still need a ton of them across the ATW network, mostly Mid and North Wales with a handful in West Wales to get. There was also preserved lines to go after, but that was a dead end as the ones I wanted were either too awkward to do or not open! Back to the drawing board it was until the evening of 21st July, when I saw a news story on BBC Midlands Today celebrating Chiltern's accomplishments over the last 20 years. What do they show arriving at Leamington Spa in one clip? Forum celebrity 68008, which I still need and the desire to get it in the book suddenly becomes quite real!

So after not hitting the hay until around 0030, unsurprisingly I'm not keen on getting up and I seriously considered staying in bed, going later for a Heart of Wales shack score. I remember, however, the hashtag and the spirits are rallied before I head out to the bus with a travel mug of Tech's Fuel of Champions! Tech's Mobile Disco has been off for the last couple of days, so it was some most welcome Nightcore this morning too. I can't help thinking I might have bowled myself out mind, as it's meant to rain this afternoon in the Midlands. My coat was still drying this morning, so I'm taking a chance with the forecast being wrong! No gen available on 68008 left me deciding to say stuff it and not risk it today. Shack scoring became the name of the game, but which ones?

I decide upon a day return to Shrewsbury first which got me plenty of time for a large coffee. Just as well as the queue was quite long! With that sourced, I go back and forth on the options, of which I must have had at least 6 by the time I was leaving Pumpkin. 175003 arrives for a mileage boost and after an hour of deciding I could only knock it down to 3 options. All of which were still debatable and had their pros and cons, so a look at the boards on arrival in Shrewsbury was to decide it! A decision finally made to do the Crewe locals as those shacks had been annoying me for a long time. Sadly one would have to remain due to the way things work out, but hey ho! Super Dud 150240 rolls up to take me to winner shack Nantwich, where I carry out a supply raid in the nearby Morrisons.

150240 is soon back to take me to the day's winner shack, Prees. The village itself is discovered to be a mile away, nah I can't be bothered to walk to it. The map suggests nothing of interest there anyway. With a +51 here I have very little to do so I crack open a bottle of cider!

The step off the train was enormous here, and I swear some of the shacks I've done this year on the Heart of Wales have been more interesting than Prees! Time for Tech's Mobile Disco to kill the fester! Most of you won't be able to appreciate the weirdness of playing tunes like Nightcore - Raver's Fantasy or Ravers in the UK at such a remote location, take it from me that such upbeat tunes while waiting for 175s to pass, so they can be added to the observations file, is just plain bizarre. As was seeing 150257 pass through without stopping towards Shrewsbury, didn't even see the barriers go down and I have no idea what service it was on!

150240 is back after 56 minutes, and I get my stop at winner shack Wrenbury requested. I'm going to have a decent bit of mileage off this 150 today, let alone whatever I 9had off it before! Only Yorton remains between Holmes Chapel and Milford Haven to be visited, eventually the others in the way [Chelford and Goostrey - Ed] will one day soon get visited to clear Manchester Piccadilly to Milford Haven for shacks! Those of you who follow the action on Twitter will have noticed a huge gap in tweets during the afternoon, I feel obligated to point out this was due to having no data signal for a large amount of the day. Another cider and, of course, Tech's Mobile Disco fill the time at Wrenbury, this time starting with Cascada's Evacuate the Dancefloor [the eagle-eyed of you will note I referenced this on a Liverpool bash earlier in 2016 - Ed], Nightcore version of course, followed by the same version of Cascada's Bad Boy and Miracle, ending with another previously referenced Nightcore tune, Jump Jump, one of my Top Tunes 2016!

It's a different guard to the previous one now, and I request a stop at Yorton. I think it was a bit of a surprise to him to be honest! 150240 is unsurprisingly back to cart me off to winner shack Yorton, and I have a different guard now who was surprised to have Yorton requested. A count of required ATW shacks was now undertaken, 78 [or was it 77? - Ed] remain with the vast majority north of Shrewsbury. It won't come as a surprise to learn I'm planning to spend a week going after a large number of these!

Yorton is the final shack score today, however the plan falls apart here, as I find myself talking to the owner of The Railway Inn and discover it's closed! My options are the shop a mile away in each direction, along non-pavement roads, or go to Wem where I'm promised there's plenty of places to get food from. I'm not willing to do that walk, so it's to the Crewe bound platform to await 150240 yet again for a short hop to Wem. The final alternative of staying hungry and festering until 1605 for the next Shrewsbury-bound service, was deemed completely unacceptable! The choice was very limited in Wem, and after not being served within an acceptable timescale in my choice of pub, I left and got some reduced hot food from the nearby Co-Op. Not that I was pleased with them, as the 3 for a fiver offer on the beer didn't come off. I was too hungry to argue and left unamused, devouring food on the short walk back to the Shrewsbury-bound platform.

The food was OK, and filled a gap, but I could have happily devoured a doner meat, chips, pitta bread and BBQ sauce and still been hungry! The beers are all from Hobsons, a Shropshire brewery, and it won't be a surprise to anyone that I got Tech's Mobile Disco on again after a while! 150240 is done for the last time back to Shrewsbury, and I finally have mobile data signal again. Cue a massive update on Untappd and on Twitter, again my apologies for the lack of tweets, Shropshire is dire for mobile data signal. By the time the 150 arrived I was more than ready to be going home, happy I've had 4 shack scores today but annoyed at myself too for not going after potential winners!

175109 takes me forward to Hereford, after a revolting but winner brew in The Bulls Head, Shrewsbury. I'm not going to lie to any of you, I'm worried about how much I've had today. How the SVR put their name to Hobsons' Hoppy Ale is beyond me, it's not nice! Off for the bus home now, and I'll be glad to get home and have a good feed as that food from Co-Op only filled a gap! 9 days left until I head to London, and a majorly tough week lies in wait...

Guess which 68 was spotted at Birmingham earlier today? ;)

Anyhow sounded like a very good little day trip, congrats on clearing those pesky local shacks between Shrewsbury & Crewe (ones which I've never even called at!).

Want to borrow my rough plan on how to conquer North Wales?

Only stupidly early morning (either 06:55 or 07:10) and there's only a 50% chance of it appearing again this eve (either 8 or 10 in a few minutes with an 18:55 from Moor Street). 68013 and 015 were on the day turns today.

Sounds like a fun day was had there - hunger excepted.

Tech, that leap for some of those smaller shacks between Shrewsbury and Crewe sounded like a very productive day for you despite the lack of winners. But there again, you'll almost certainly make up for that when you hit the Smoke in a short while.

I know the feeling because I waited a long time to see it, and thought I'd cop it at Leamington on the 19th july. Luckily for me, I got it at Moor Street on the 23rd when it turned up an hour late. I had no idea that it was on that service either!

Great read as usual Tech, really enjoyed that.

It's a shame you didn't get any winners, but at least you managed to get some winner shacks.

A nice little shack scratch move there, just the kind of thing I'll be looking to do next year.

You're joking me...What did it work?

Cheers regarding the shacks, they've been annoying me for years. Attention now needs to turn to the other big gaps that cause irritation in West Wales, 5 of them on the Pembroke Dock line (you'll all be unsurprised to learn that the dealing with them is not only a long task but mind-numbing too) as well as Fishguard & Goodwick. The remaining 4 on the Heart of Wales line take priority though, as do those on the Cambrian between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. The remainder of the Cambrian will be dealt with eventually, as I also need the many narrow guage lines up there. I could easily spend 2 weeks in Wales just on clearing the lines and the shacks!

Ah that's OK then, I would have been bowled then! Not a bad day at all aye, and if I'd known the pub would be closed I'd have got food at that Morrisons!

Oh yes indeed, imagine my annoyance when I found someone in my favourite table on my last run with it yesterday lol.

Definitely happy with the decision I made following a lack of gen on 68008, especially with the shacks when I discovered the issues in the Wrexham area

Oh I will make up for it, indeed I must make sure I source a new red pen in preparation for the big trip. Not only that but I need to finalise when I'm going on my second visit in August!

Productive time indeed, I believe Chirk is my most irritating gap in that part of the world now. As are Frodsham, Helsby and Runcorn East for that matter!

You were lucky then, fair game. One day the blighter will be scored, it could still happen on the day I go for a Chiltern shack scoring spree!

To be fair it's very difficult to get winners in this area now, as there's almost nothing to get within a 100 mile radius!

Glad you enjoyed the read though.

Kite, still not looked up when I last had 150240 but I'll know the answer this weekend when I do my next RailMiles update

Be warned there is jack squat around most of the shacks! Feel free to request some gen on the local area when you have it organised :)

You have a PM with my rough plan :)

I hope the seats availability at some of those stations with jack squat around are semi-decent (as in little bus shelters to protect against the rain/wind). My method to pass the boredom of sitting around shacks in the middle of nowhere is to either relax and "zen out" if possible, if not read a book/magazine

All except Yorton had reasonable shelters, where if it rains make your way to the road under the railway for protection. Not much use if there's a lot of traffic mind!

PM received and it all looks good :)

Thinking about my offer of advice to 55013, the same applies to anyone else who's going shack scoring on my patch. That covers quite the amount of terrain, so drop me a PM if you're visiting the area!

As you can tell, this didn't get read with a curry the other night! Great stuff for a short trip, nice job getting the shacks scratched.

I agree with your choice of music - the Dynasty Warriors soundtracks used to occupy a fair amount of space on my old MP3 player!

Glad you enjoyed the reads, and you won't be surprised to find I'm Techniquest on Untappd too

I'm well tempted to bust out the PS2 this weekend and have a right proper trip down Memory Lane. I'm glad that someone knows what I was talking about too!

It's getting rather expensive finding something to do on my limited available time on the rails now, guess it's just as well I'm potentially going to be earning more money in the coming weeks...

Glad to hear you may have more money on the way, I don't worship money but a tiny bit more than "Enough" does make life a tiny bit more enjoyable if that makes sense (And no I'm not rich, ha ha). Or to put it another another way, not having to worry about it quite so much. I got paid Statutory Sick Pay this month. It is going to be a long drag to August pay day.

01/08/2016 - Last Minute Llanwrda

No hashtag or pop culture references this time! It was 1046 and all of a sudden, following some duff weather gen, I leapt off the armchair, turned Futurama off and realised the bus I would now need left at 1110. Cue a manic rush to get dressed and prepped, although I couldn't find my notebook or NREA, I left the house to pelt it up the road at 1100. The NREA was found in the bottom of my bag thankfully, but not the notebook. The scramble paid off, apart from forgetting to apply anti-perspriant and I'm on the 58 plate Tempo for some fast running and hill climbing thrash.

The tension mounts up during the last 5 miles, as we come across slow traffic caused by two tractors with megatons of bales, and with only 12 minutes between bus and train as it was, not mentioning how we were about 3 down leaving, the Danger Music is most certainly in effect. "Tech, surely there's an alternative plan?" I hear you ask. Well yeah there is, but it means festering for 3.75 hours for the next train! We arrive 6 down at 1154 and I get my day return for £6.90 to Llanwrda boarding 153323 at 1156. 153323 is taking me on the hour's journey, yeah buddy, DBT!

I finally finish my 'Stuff still needed for haulage' lists by Llandovery [although it occurs to me that I need to add LU stuff yet - Ed] and I alight at Llanwrda at 1300. Only 2 hours and 45 minutes until the train back! I pop into the village shop, 10 minutes walk from the station, then contemplate getting the bus to Llandovery, where I surmise there will be more to do. It boils down to a coin flip for the decider, and it comes up heads three times, so I stick to the train. There's a cafe here, so I get a bacon sandwich and a coffee as I needed the caffeine and some proper food. The owner is originally from Worthing, and we have a natter until just before 1400 when I leave for the station again, as I have a book to read.

Back on the platform, I bring the trip report back up to date before anything else. Jeffrey Archer's Mightier than the Sword is finally begun, had this book for a long time! Time soon passes and good progress is made with the book by 1540, when I discover my next train is 6 down. Time for a break and get some tunes on! We leave 9 down and it's more DBT but I still have Tech's Mobile Disco going until Llandovery. The uphill thrash on the section to Llanwrtyd is usually worth pricking the ears open for after all, especially through Sugar Loaf Tunnel. With a 37 that's even more fun I can assure you! Just 3 more Heart of Wales shacks remain now, 1 of which will require a very significant fester of 3 hours and 19 minutes! Llandovery to Milford Haven now cleared for shacks as well, and just 7 mainline shacks left to get in West Wales. More reading of the book is done as far as Builth Road, a thorn in my side this one...The bus home followed, and I prepare for two long days at work before my next adventure, which I will probably post the trip report for by the weekend. Already I see in my future an afternoon spin on the Heart of Wales next Monday...

Sounds like an enjoyable mini-bash there Tech. If the Sugar Loaf tunnel sounds as good as you say it does, then I'll be in for a treat when I travel through it later on this month!

Nice one Tech. You've reminded me I inherited a Kindle, with the complete works of Jeffrey A ready installed. Must crank it up, leccy wise, sometime.

Is two tractors with megatons of bales a reference to part-fareing in West Yorkshire on WCRC'S Thursday Scaramouche Spa Express?? :)

Why the 'or'?

It's because I can't remember which number it is, my count was done last week when I was under the influence and now I need to re-count.

What I do know is that I'm down to 1,306 shacks to get in England Wales and Scotland. Getting closer...

It also depends on how vocal your Sprinter is. 153323 wasn't as vocal aa expected which was very disappointing. Also, worth noting that towards Swansea you'll be going downhill so no epic thrash. You had to be there with 37425 to appreciate how good it was!

Dreadful! Good call on the Kindle, and I plan to do some more reading of the book on the way to/from work tomorrow. Unless I put it off until Monday's planned fester spree...

Hopefully I'll get a good sounding Sprinter when I go through it, it'd be good to get a nice noise when travelling through the tunnel. Northern's 156s usually sound good going through the tunnels on the approaches to Lime Street, although there's been a couple that weren't that good compared to others.
