I'm an occasional lurker on this site, and this thread has made me join purely to ask the OP this question.

Did you amend Gene Pitney's "24 Hours from Tulsa" or Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine's "24 Minutes from Tulse Hill"?

Showing my age, the great Gene Pitney - saw him on a bill with Roy Orbison once. Bit like caviar with lobster, and all at a price that an ordinary working guy like me could afford without sacrifice! Regret to say I've never heard of the other one you mention, but I shall attempt to listen to it as I'm always open to new experiences.

You've just reminded me that Status Quo had a sing called End of the Line. Wouldn't have been recorded possibly 2-4 years before the Traveling Wilburys one but I'm sure that's where the similarities ended.

Slow Train - Status Quo
Railroad (no trains remix) - Status Quo
I Want to get Home - Queen
29 Ways (to not make it to my destination by train) - Willie Dixon
Good Luck - Basement Jaxx
Get me off (this train) - Basement Jaxx
Good Luck (at the getting to your destination remix) - Basement Jaxx

Or by the same artiste, "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover('s Walk)"...

Ah yes, reminds me of "In The Depot" by Elvis !

If we're allowed to stray into the territory of the old Southern Railway, I'd like to invoke "Moquette Man" by Eltham John.

Goodbye Crawley World - Pink Floyd.

Didn't they also do "The (central) Division Bell" ?

I (can't) Get Around - Beach Boys

For those, along the south coast in particular, resorting to alternative transport:-
The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round

Asking your average Southern commuter who is to blame for the fiasco, the answer could well be
Both Sides Now - sung by the incomparable Judy Collins

Between the parallel lines
"Halt the Line" - Toto
"Fifteen Minutes Late" - Snow Patrol
"Wheels Aren't Turnin'" - REO Cattlewagon

Widening it to tunes/instrumentals

Bluebell (Railway) Polka - Trad.

I raise you "Merstham in Darkness" and "He Who Brings the Night Bus Replacements" by Two Steps From Hell... a band whose name doesn't really need changing!

You've reminded me of the following song
Southern Cross by Hawkwind or in this case

Reminded by the 50th anniversary of England World Cup win that very current then was

Out of Time - Chris Farlowe.

Then dredging my memory for other ditties then popular:-

(Wait til the) Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett and, more subtly.

First Cut is the Deepest - P.P. Arnold - now why wasn't she a big star with that voice?
