Excellent.

I trust this put the Class 230 idea for a certain line in file 13?

I would disputethat - there always seem to be plenty at Eastcroft and Uttoxeter races gets three turns strengthened at the drop of a hat.
I have the impression that both EMT and SWT have relatively low planned availability - hence their 158's golden spanners as they dont fail sat on Salisbury.

Strengthening usually requires stretching maintenance and/or shortforming other services. I can assure you that the EMT fleet is certainly not on low planned availability with short formations being a daily occurrence with some rather old trains worked very hard.

No. This is effectively emergency cover for the summer season for the loss of 170204 in the crash at Roudham. Not expected to be a long term thing.

Indeed, but so was the 230 prototype at this point, any long term plans would have been for the next franchise holder to have put in their bid.

Ooh this is good news. Assuming my holiday time in early August is actually still in the system (been waiting for weeks to find out), I'll now have to get myself over there one way or another.

37s, 68s, 90s and 156s all waiting to be had, ooh I could have a good few days of fun over there...

Thanks for the heads up, time to get my TPP Mode head on!

That's no doubt why only that part of the turn was quoted - as the first 158 dies for the day off the 1911 arrival...

If AGA do only want something short term, there are a number of 172s largely rusting to the rails at LOROL, be interesting to know how long the conversion course from a 170 would be.

Indeed 87015 that was why only trains after 19:30 were quoted.

172s are a sensible idea though as quoted above it looks like 68s and Mark IIs. Perhaps better for a TPE 170 to come to Anglia (vice Chiltern) and a LOROL 172 to be loaned to Chiltern for an interim period. However I think there is a refurbishment program taking place for LOROL 172s during this period.

The 172s, how different are they from the original 170s, which is obviously what AGA has. Could crews and Crown Point operate and maintain them with any changes or retraining? Obviously while the driving of the 68s is a slight point Crown Point and conductors all sign and work with Mk2s.

Also, toilets. Do the 172s have loos? I could see them being very unpopular plonked on Cambridges or the East Suffolk if they don't. Are they still 90mph units?

Both MTU engines but different variant, the biggest challenge would be the gearboxes, 170s have voith hydraulics whereas 172s have the ZF boxes which give that distinct gear change.

Bogies are also different with the 172s getting a development of voyager smallfeetitus.

London Overground 172s I believe are sans toilette whereas the LM versions do have them, can't see why they couldn't be fitted on the LO versions, cost not considered.

All in all the hauled set is the right move, if we were thinking cascades I think 172s to Chiltern and Chiltern 170s to AGA would get my vote.

I thought that the units were getting a small refurbishment while they were out off traffic, which was the reasoning that I was thinking off in addition to the problem of the loos.

Is there any reason loco-hauled stock isn't assigned to one of the Breckland Line diagrams? Is this to do with acceleration / timing / short turnarounds in Cambridge and Norwich?

Loco speed restrictions on the Breckland would kill the timings, Wherry Lines are 60mph max any ways with only one loco restriction over a bridge between Postwick and Brundall Gardens so the locos can operate on sprinter timetables.

However does the 37 Short Set still have extra padding in it compared to the normal sprinter service?

Mr Edge to the rescue.

Yes, the current short set still has about 3-5m padding to allow for operational constraints and far longer dispatch process. Although often not needed as us Norwich crews have got rapid on the beast.

Both short hauled sets should pass each other at Acle at 08:58 & 18:28. That will keep the photographers happy on the bridge.

Will it work as a side by side shot though? Looks as though the platforms are staggered slightly and the footbridge is in the middle?

I'm doing an anglia rover in August, would appreciate any more tips on where to get the best angles. Particularly the smaller stations.

Reliably informed that blue/grey mk2s will be heading for service in Anglia next week. 37s or 68 set to be confirmed.

The Blue-Grey set, now sat looking very fancy in the Low Level sidings at Norwich is going with the 68s to replace the Anglia Mk2s.

Only for a short time though I believe to cover for the Anglia coaches exams. Interior equally as bad but without wheelchair space. Outside paint job is good on close inspection though.

Any chance of Riviera fixing the HVAC/aircon whilst the set is on maintenance, or are they going to leave it untouched to demonstrate yet again their utter contempt for anyone who has the misfortune to use one of their rancid contraptions?

If I was betting I would go for the latter of those two options.... Unfortunately.

Agreed! Just hope you don't receive one of the coaches from the GBRF tour - the infamous coach D! I gather this set has erm, interesting hearing issues. Let's hope it's a warm week!

The coaches match the clientele in Yarmouth.

I hope they don't try and fix it... last time they tried to fix a coach at Great Yarmouth it filled up with smoke, this was after the MA went, so all HVAC and lights went
