A statement by GTR says that DOO applies from 21 August. Other than the obvious what happens on that date that doesn't apply on 21 June - ie what official approval is needed for DOO? For example why can a 377 run DOO at Reigate on 21 August but not before? Is it just driver agreements that aren't in force until then?

Im starting to think the only way this impasse is going through be solved is a court case where both sides argue their point of view over safety with whatever evidence they can provide and that court case settle the legal safety status once and for all, either its ruled not yet safe to operate or its ruled safe and the union will have to accept its rollout.

Oh dear, the war is beginning to hit the parent company in the pocket, and hard. Perhaps the management rather expected the pesky workforce to have been defeated by now? More strike dates, more court dates and potentially the surpressed wrath of Aslef all still to come, the financial forecast doesn't look too promising for the time being.

Given that everybody knows this is DfT dirty work by contract, how much longer will Go Ahead be willing to act as the sh*t on the end of the government's stick? I wonder if the corruption is rife enough for tax payer funds to find their way over to Go Ahead HQ in order to keep the collusion alive and well...

I had to chuckle just now as the first BBC London bulleitin I saw just before 0730, Sonja was talking about the strike and Sonja said

'...And Southern not having enough staff'

Fast forward to the next one before 0800 and she changed it to

'...Southern staff being off with sickness'

Did someone have a word there? :)

Sort of related here, to add to their misery they now need to employ an additional 58 staff (albeit agency staff) on the thameslink route to assist with the dispatch of the class 700s. They tried to push through a deal where the driver would self dispatch at stations that he doesn't currently, but that didn't work out

SO sad lol...perhaps giving the complete buffoon that is Charles Horton a P45 might be a useful starting point in finding a solution - the man is about as much use as a second hand condom.

Given that DfT keep shifting the goalposts now the franchise/concession is in place I wonder how long it is before some of the losing bidders might consider litigation to at least recover their bid costs because it's not what they were asked to bid against. After all, had the parameters been accurate the final decision might have been different....

Shocker, 'Minister supports government agenda...' You can almost see the hand up her arse.

Currently over sixty comments below the article, and I count two or three in support of the minister/GTR. All others totally unconvinced. They really are struggling, aren't they?! I particularly like this one

"Self-righteous smug bint, promoted above her ability."

I wouldn't know about her credentials as a bint, but the rest appears fairly accurate. She can do comedy though, providing a few laughs by describing Horton etc as "top of the range" management! :D :D :D

Depends what sort of range....if it involves SA-80, M-16 or AK74 I would love them to be at the top of the range.....<D

Someone organised a petition calling for her resignation in light of this interview it would seem.

you managed to pick that up quickly, it still doesn't have enough signatures to go live. You can have mine though.

I'm saying nothing. ;)

Details of the petition:

The recent interview with The Argus demonstrated that Claire Perry has no clue how to resolve a dispute to the mutual benefit of all stakeholders. She has shown no professionalism with inflammatory comments and cannot be entrusted as a public servant at DfT to work for the long suffering passengers.

The only messages Claire Perry managed to convey in a recent interview with The Argus (http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/1455...s_are_launching_a_war_on_passengers/?ref=fbpg) are finger-pointing, inflammatory and provocative, and she has contributed nothing towards resolving the ongoing dispute between GTR and its staff that anyone can see. The last thing GTR passengers want at this moment in time is a government minister to add fuel to the fire.

It was rejected:

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not responsible for.

The resignation of an individual Minister is not a decision for the Government or Parliament as a whole.

If you're concerned about a particular policy or decision that's the responsibility of Government or Parliament, you could start a petition about that.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.

It would be quicker to walk. Of course if you want to see the scenery it might be worth doing. Would be a cheap journey but you wouldn't be allowed to exit Clapham Junction station, although I assume you could use the station facilties there.

In an ideal world it would be to offer bus acceptance. After all Go-Ahead own the buses and have a stake in Govia.

RMT launches new dossier exposing safety risks of axing guards from rail services

ROLE OF THE GUARD – A dossier on the dangers of driver-only operation” – which exposes in detail the threat to safety on rail services from axing guards from our trains.
The report – which highlights a catalogue of incidents where safety has been compromised on DOO services as well as incidents where the presence of the guard has averted potential disaster – is released by the union on the day that a major protest in defence of guards on Southern Services is held in London and 24 hours after RMT announced a programme of industrial action on Scotrail against the extension of DOO.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;

“This dossier has been produced by RMT as part of our national fight against the introduction and extension of Driver Only Operation on Britain’s railways as the greedy train operating companies look to dilute the safety regime in favour of maximising their profits from the privatised network.

“The dossier sets out a range of examples from across the country that detail the real consequences for the travelling public of axing and undermining the safety-critical role of the guard.

“The examples are horrific – but the current moves, in the wake of the Government-backed McNulty report that made DOO the default option on our trains - mean that they will be the tip of the iceberg if we don’t halt and reverse the drive to take out the guards.

“Everyone who works on the railway knows that Platform/Train Interface is the number one area of risk, day in and day out. That fact is accepted by the safety agencies who are there to monitor and manage the safety regime across the rail network.

“With surging demand, unmatched by rail capacity, overcrowding on our trains and on our platforms is now endemic. The guards, working with their platform and driver colleagues, are the pivotal point in the safe management of the dangers presented at the passenger/train interface. Removing them, or downgrading their role, is a lethal gamble with passenger safety.

“Only a fool, or someone motivated solely by the bottom line on a company balance sheet, would contemplate tampering with our guards on Britain’s crowded and stretched railways. And yet that is exactly what is happening.”

The dossier is available to view at the above link and by RMT standards is actually quite professional looking. Hopefully it can make a difference but I won't get my hopes up.....

That's a bit more like it. I'm not a massive fan of the introduction (usually buzzwords such as 'greedy' feature) but the actual content beyond that seems really really good. That's a lot more like what I would expect to see in this argument. Now I wonder if they can have a load of them printed and start handing them out on station platforms particularly in the GTR area?
