I completely agree about abolishing these antiquated bank holidays. They are a hangover from the days when workers didn't get paid leave and irrelevant. Yes keep Christmas day, Easter Sun and possibly NY but let all employees take the remainder as compulsory leave days at a time which is convenient for them. Any attempt to prevent an employee using these days would be protected in law.
Has any other country abolished bank holidays? I like them, as they are the only time I and most of my friends will get a long weekend off together. In fact, I would have more not less (apart from Christmas and Easter, there are only three!).
I remember a few years ago travelling from Yorkshire to London on a Bank Holiday Friday - it might have been the royal wedding a few years ago where I think we got Monday and Tuesday as a bank holiday. Grand Central made their evening service reservations only, had staff checking tickets on the platform and were publicising that services were extremely busy and people should not attempt to travel.
If it's not economical for the railways to cope with the extra demand, they should say so. Heavy publicity telling people not to take the train to the South West, a block on cheap advance ticket and maybe classifying the Friday evening, Saturday morning and Monday afternoon/evening as peak times would help.
Wouldn't do the railways any good in terms of PR, but...
Another question - if we abolished bank holidays, when would Network Rail do the bank holiday engineering works?
