Trivia; Busiest single-track station?

I've no idea, but I bet in the NW Windermere's in with a chance? Are there any really busy commuter stations in the South which are single-line?

Off the top of my head, I'd say Braintree and Chafford Hundred would be in with a shout.

This must be a close contender, apparently it's risen to nearly 2 million passengers a year. Comes as a surprise to some to find 3-car dmu on the Slough shuttle, full and standing in the peaks. Windsor Central station was stupidly truncated in BR days, as the shuttle could really do with extra cars in the peaks now.

*Kirkby (Merseyside) 2,409,000

* Both these Merseyrail stations are single track, right enough - but with a buffer stop in the middle. And significantly more passengers in one direction than the other.

I suppose the next question would be, if some of those lines/stations are overloaded, will they get re-doubled? Chafford-Hundred is next to Lakeside; which of course wasn't there years ago so must be affecting the numbers now?

There was no Chafford Hundred station before Lakeside. The station only opened in 1993.

According to Wikipedia Tower Gateway had 3.993m users as long ago at 2010-11. No more recent figures immediately to hand.

Castleford (566,000) is in the same situation with the added anomaly of being on a through line but all services reverse!

Stourbridge Town - train and and out every 10 minutes
Cardiff Bay - train in and out every 12 minutes
Barry to Barry Island - train in and out every 15 minutes

The first two are shuttles.

I was going to mention the Wirral line platform at each of Moorfields, Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Central. The Wirral loop line is operationally separate but I'm not sure you could consider any as a separate single track station...

Although both now two platforms both Bathgate and Livingston North had very high passenger numbers and were both single track stations until 2010 and had a half hourly service.

Kirkby (Merseyside) is mentioned above. It has nearly 2.5 million passengers annually and 4 tph except in the evenings and Sundays, so it must be one of the most intensively used. However, although the Merseyrail station itself is single track (there is an adjacent single track platform served by Northern Rail) most of the line is double until the final stretch of maybe 1 kilometre or less... does this count?
What about Chesham on LU Metropolitan Line, at the end of a few miles of single track?
