...Would you rather have 100 coaches coming into Manchester , fouling up the local road network and then fouling up the M6 and M1 afterwards?

Yes, as I was passing through Piccadilly station (to see two members of my favourite band, Merry Hell, perform live in Wigan) around midday inbound and 18.30 returning (when it was starting to get busy and had get-there-itis) and not encounter loud-mouthed and drunk football yobs causing 'merry hell' on my way home.

my goodness I have just watched that video purporting to show "chaos" and football hooligans causing "merry hell" again. It shows nothing of the sort. The overreaction and wibble from the usual correspondents is laughable whilst some of the quoted tweets are shamefully hyperbolic.

The sheltered lives some of you lead - honestly!

EDIT: quite happy to acknowledge that people not used to the kind of environment shown in that video could become upset or worried but there is, honestly, nothing there at all. Some life experiences might help posters to understand that. There are some blokes chanting and not even swearing, which I would be if my team got a good result and Old Trafford and, crucially, for this board, what looks like Virgin and BTP doing a through examination of travel documents. Something many of you scream for!

The clubs do not choose the kick-off times, the TV companies do. And they certainly don't contribute to any costs.

The TV companies pay billions to the clubs for the rights to show matches. They may not contribute directly to such costs, but their money has made football what it is today. How do you think the clubs pay for anything?

Hardly a pleasant travel environment though, is it?

Hands up those who would enjoy travelling like this.

It's got nothing to do with being worried or living a sheltered life, it's simply unpleasant, a nuisance, and something the railway would be better off without.

In your view. What do you like doing then? I could make some ill informed comments based upon my prejudices about that if you like. I like going to football and I have been travelling to away games for nearly 30 years. Have you been to many away games following your team?

Crowded trains are not a pleasant environment I agree.

The railway would be better off without all those tiresome commuters that fill up the trains and are such a nuisance in the rush hour. Lets ban them too. And all the long distance travellers that clog up trains at weekends, ban them.

But obviously not us, we are entitled to a pleasant train journey at any time.

Having passed through the gate near platforms 6 and 7 at around 1830, they definitely did NOT check my ticket. Having encountered loud-mouthed football yobs quite a few times on trains/stations (when not going anywhere near a football match) before and on one occasion witnessing a fight I wanted to be on my way asap. Whatever happened to byelaw 7 (1) (i)?

Loud moth football yobs? what does that even mean? You have seen a fight once? wow! I saw two fights in London over the weekend. Nothing to do with football.......

As for that particular byelaw - don't be so silly. Another person detached from the real world. How do you propose to enforce that?

But the races get middle class drunks wearing suits and dresses opposed to working class drunks wearing replica team shirts ;)

Make that middle class drunks wearing replica shirts. Unfortunately the results of the annual Premier League fan survey are no longer published on the web, but the 2008 survey showed the following class breakdown:

AB Upper Middle 42%
C1 Lower Middle 32%
C2 Skilled Working 16%
DE Working Class/Subsistence 9%

Working class people were priced out of attending Premier League football a long time ago.

What a silly thread. Some people really showed themselves up with the amount of prejudice on display.

Move on, people.
