Haven't they all moved to Long Marston?

Crocodile burgers?! Where on Earth would one get a thing from, and what sort of taste/texture does one get?

An excellent trip for sure there, certainly that must have helped fill your books well. Of course, an excellent read too :)

That sounds like a good time on my local patch but I can't believe you flagged Gingertom at Solihull!

Unless you only need two, neither of which you've ever actually seen after ages on the tram network!

Don't worry Quinn, I've heard 4 more have been ordered for the extension to New Street (latest issue of Rail) so you will have to go hunting again :)

Sounds excellent! It'll give me more to get, that's for sure! Shame they won't be around for at least another 10 years (when the New Street extension might be open)!

10 years? You're being optimistic!

When I went past Wednesbury depot the other week I couldn't see any of them there but who knows? I have a hunch 37 is one of the new batch for 4 Kite mentions, but without checking I can't say. I guess we'll see one day, but you'll have cleared them before me without any doubt...

How were the crocodile burgers, and did you resist the temptation for any 'make it snappy' jokes?

Just think, soon we'll be able to reject 68ers off Leeds, possibly, depending on what the rumours are this week. :D

A day out in the West Midlands certainly proved to be very productive , sir. Hopefully you expressed your gratitude to the rock-throwing scrotes for the bonus trams & shacks ....

Good read, as ever.

Yep, I suppose I am. 20 years, definitely!

If 37 is one of the batch of 4 then I only need one of the current ones! The Midland Metro is right on my doorstep though so I have a reason for clearing it first!

Crocodile burgers tasted very similar to beef burgers, to be honest.
Apparently she got them from Iceland.

did you resist the temptation for any 'make it snappy' jokes?

I'm afraid I couldn't stop myself :)

There won't be much rejecting going on.
Should save me a few bob as well as all my moves will be close to home!

You're not applying for the job of TPE class 68 fleet manager, then?
;)

I’ve just had an interesting and enjoyable couple of days with a rare double event.
As usual I had booked a Friday off work and for March that was the 18th, this was done before I realised that GCR diesel gala would be taking place on the 19th and would have a required visitor.
Anyway, here’s day one.

I had looked for cheap tickets on Virgin East Coast but none were to be had and so I turned to Grand Central.
Grand Central have a couple of advantages, one it’s cheap-ish and two there’s free parking at Brighouse, which is only a twenty minute drive from home.
Of course, there are down sides as well, namely the fact that it takes so long, coupled with the assurance that the service won’t be worked by a sub thousand mile 91 :)

I only needed one GC 180 coach for a ride in and that was the first class vehicle in 180114.
I was going first class so naturally had my fingers crossed for a positive result.
I didn’t get one as it was 180112 that appeared for the stagger to Doncaster.
After Doncaster there’s no problem and the 180s fly along, but it’s telling that half the journey time for these services is between Bradford and Donny.

The first class offerings aren’t too spectacular and they weren’t improved by the news that there was no hot water as there was a fault with the boiler, so no cups of tea for me.
Still, I got several bottles of water and some biscuits to tide me over.

An automated announcement half way through the journey advising passengers to take care when carrying hot drinks brought about a smattering of ironic laughter from caffeine desperate punters.

Arrival into Kings Cross was at ten past ten, somewhat later then when I go on Virgin.
Unusually we pulled into one of the suburban platforms, number 9, and when I alighted I immediately spotted a gaggle of photographers at the top of platform 8.
Obviously my crank antenna kicked in and I thought there must be a kettle or some such round the corner and so I strolled up.
Imagine my surprise when I walked round the corner to see a brand new Virgin Satsuma, or something, sat there.

I wasn't expecting that:

EDMU 800101_2016.03.18_2_Kings Cross by Phil Wood, on Flickr

It was 800101.

I took a couple of snaps and noticed that the other people stood there all had “press” passes hung round their necks.
I decided that instead of walking back round to platform 9 I would just stroll down 8 and have a further examination.
I did notice that all the passenger coach windows were covered over, so no chance of a peek inside.
As I approached the buffer end of the train I saw a large gathering of people and it dawned on me that this must be a launch event.
“I wonder if Richard Branson’s here” I chuckled to myself.
Then I spotted a flowing mane pop out of the cab door, followed by an upper torso and a waving arm.
“He is, and all!”
I suddenly felt a bit conspicuous as I started to mingle with loads of people, most in suits with Virgin or press badges and some serving staff carrying plates of canapes.
I was just some scruffy herbert who’d wondered in from the wrong end of the show.
I walked past the cab of the unit and saw that Dickie was now sat inside, grinning and waving out of the platform side window.
There were loads of police and security people stood about but they were to stop uninvited guests from coming through from the South end.
As a big bloke with a beard and a rucksack who was quite clearly not an invited guest I expected to be thrown to the floor or shot at any second :)
I wasn’t.
I made my way through the cordon going in the opposite way to a few late comers and did attract some puzzled looks from the security, but they didn’t say anything as I was heading away from the proceedings.
I got a couple of shots from the public side of the barrier and then set off as I wasn’t going to waste time hanging around.

Today I was heading East as I wanted to make some inroads into my list of required 315s, a couple of 317s wouldn’t go amiss as well.
To the underground I headed and 24055 was sat in to Liverpool Street.
Once there I mooched down to the low numbered platforms and immediately spotted a winner.
It was straight through the barriers and onto 315801 for a run through to my first new shack of the day Cheshunt
The same unit was then taken back to Turkey Street, picked because I found the name amusing :)

A short wait was followed by another new unit, 315803, which I did for a short run to Theobalds Grove

No, it's not the Gobble-in line:
EMU 315803_2016.03.18_1_Turkey Street by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I had just missed an up service and so ended up hanging around for 315803 coming back and doing this to Hackney Downs
A third new 315 was then bagged when I took 315814 for the five and a half mile run to Highams Park

My winning streak ended as dud for the day 315801 then produced and this was my ride to the next new station, Clapton.

EMU 315801_2016.03.18_4_Highams Park by Phil Wood, on Flickr

It was another dud, this time from one of last year’s soirees, 315811, that whisked me away from Clapton and took me just under two miles to St. James Street
I was expecting my dud streak to continue as I knew what should be coming to take me on the next leg of my East London jaunt.
I wasn’t disappointed, then, when 315814 re-appeared.
I took this through to Liverpool Street.

I hadn’t finished with that line yet, though as I had one station that was very much on my required list, Wood Street, for obvious reasons.
I wanted to go there on a winner and my mission was successful as it was 315817 that did the deed.
Obviously, anywhere with a name like Wood Street was going to festoon me with winners, it’s only right.

A fine name for a station:
EMU 315817_2016.03.18_Wood Street by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I was hopeful when I saw that the next service to Liverpool Street was formed of eight coaches.
I hadn’t yet had a 317 today and so was pleased when I saw a pair coming round the corner.
I was much less pleased when I identified them as double duds 317888 and 317708.
I’d only had thirteen of them and 317708 is the only dud one from that sub-class.
So much for my namesake station being lucky.
I flagged them in disgust and waited for the next one, which was the unit I had arrived on, 315817.
Back at Liverpool Street I decided I’d had enough of that side of the station and so made my way to the high numbered platforms, still after 315s.

Consecutively numbered 315833 and 315834 were waiting to leave and it would have been rude not to and so I was soon on my way to Chadwell Heath.
With a ten minute frequency I saw the chance to bump my numbers up and had seen the service behind as it pulled into Liverpool Street and so knew I was going to increase my scoring rate.
Continuing with the name theme I wanted to visit a new shack that could have been named after a relative of mine, so I took 315858 and 315842 to Harold Wood.

Is that you, uncle Harold?
EMU 315842_2016.03.18_Harold Wood by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Actually, I know of nobody in my family called Harold, although that is my father-in-law's name, but obviously his surname is different :)

One of my foibles is that I like to ride on each unit individually when possible and so my plan was to go back to on the same two sets. But sat in the opposite unit to the one I had used on the way out.
This plan was put back when winning pair 315826 and 315819 arrived.
I may be strange but I’m not an idiot and so these two were done for a reasonable run back as far as Chadwell Heath.
I sat in 64512 of 315826 and so hope to get a seat in 315819 at some future point.
As expect this pair was followed by 315834 and 315833 and so I went in the former having earlier sampled the latter.
I took these to another new shack, Seven Kings and then followed this up with a ride on 315858, which was, of course, still working with 315842.
I still hadn’t had a 317 and so resolved to make sure I got one in before heading back West.
As it happens, I didn’t get one, I got two.
317881 was leading 317501 on a Hertford East service and so I leapt aboard and sampled the pair through to Edmonton Green.
My last EMUs of the day were a pair of 315s, winner 315816 leading dud 315804.
I had a short run on these as I was heading back to the Cross and thought the underground from Liverpool Street would be a bit busy.
Plus I could get another station (technically two, actually) ticked off.
I bailed at Seven Sisters and made my way down to the Metropolitan line platforms (I count mainline and LU stations separately, even when they’re in the same location) and a seat was found in 12009.
A not too wedged journey was then taken to Kings Cross/St Pancras.
I had a bit of time to kill and so had a mooch up to the Eurostar platforms to see if any of the new 374s were kicking about.
My luck was in as 374010 was stood at the buffers, the first one that I’ve seen.
I had enjoyed a very productive day, making the hoped for inroads into my required 315s, getting a good few shacks ticked off, scoring my first class 374 and 800 for sight and spotting a grinning businessman.
All I needed to cap the day off nicely was a ride home in my last required GC 180 coach.
Did I get it?
Yes!
180114 was on the 19.52 service to Bradford and so I now have no need to do a desperate first class single from Interchange to Halifax move in order to get it in :)
The train arrived at Brighouse more or less on time and after getting home I had to check out my photos, etc before going to bed as 45135 was due to pick me up in a few hours for day two of my adventure.
The GCR report will follow in due time.

Well jealous of your 374 and 800 sightings, both are classes I have yet to see! The new era is dawning, in a few years you'll be clearing your Azumas (Virgin's name for 800s and no doubt 801s too) for The Magical Thou!

Looks like you had quite the decent trip, some of those 315s and probably 317s will be required for me. You've also got me wanting to get over that way again for GC HSTs, as I need 4 of the power cars, not to mention 2 more with VTEC!

Gobble Gobble ;)

Sounded like a good day with some shacks and required 315s & 317s, best time if you want LO 315s & 317s is in the evenings where it's mostly 8 car sets, double the chance for a lucky win :)

Congrats on getting your last GC 180 coach! Sounds like a great day in London! I need all of the 800s/801s but, even before I've seen one, I think they're horrid units.

Just think of all those lovely HSTs and 91s they will be replacing ;)

Like how the 390s replaced those lovely locos (86s, 90s etc) on the West Coast, you must really hate Virgin stock :p

The proof they say will be in the pudding, at how it feels like inside.

Agreed - but I think they'll be cramped and bad inside.

Replacing 91s and MK4s is no major loss to me, they'll find work elsewhere no doubt.

I am interested in seeing the 800/801/802s in the flesh, but until I've had a decent run on one (say, Newport to Paddington) I won't be able to comment fairly.

A great day there Mr.13! The Satsume (love the name!) actually looks a lot better than I thought it would, but until I see one in the flesh, I shall keep my opinions to myself!

I wouldn't worry too much, you won't be able to leave the house without seeing a 80x in ten years.

The new era is dawning, in a few years you'll be clearing your Azumas (Virgin's name for 800s and no doubt 801s too) for The Magical Thou!

I sincerley hope not!
Azuma apparently means "East" but I'm sure somebody at the meeting to establish a name said "Azuma, it sounds like A zoomer, geddit, hur hur hur".
I think I'll stick with Satsuma (That's because I thought, "Azuma, it sounds like satsuma, geddit, hur hur hur" :) )

Gobble Gobble ;)

Thanks for the tip, although I'd rather have a single, not too full, winning unit than a pair of wedged ones, to be honest.
Rush hour moves are planned around avoiding the crowds as best I can rather than what would produce the most requirements.

Congrats on getting your last GC 180 coach! Sounds like a great day in London! I need all of the 800s/801s but, even before I've seen one, I think they're horrid units.

Thanks, it was most enjoyable.
I'll hold fire on judging the IEPs but I must admit that initial reports are not encouraging.
Mind you, from what I've heard the GWR ones seem to have seats made of spikes or something.
Hopefully the VTEC fleet will be better.

Thanks, it was very interesting dropping on the launch, that's for sure.
Anyway, as I'm here I might as well add the following day's adventures.

The second day of my double event was a nice visit to an excellent heritage railway, the Great Central at Loughborough.

A good time is always had there and 45135 and I may well have gone even if we hadn’t seen the gen that DRS’ 37714 was due to attend.
As usual, there’s nothing much to report as it’s just a case of going up and down the same bit of line.

45135 collected me from home at about eight thirty and we made reasonable progress to Quorn and Woodhouse station, getting there in plenty of time for our planned first loco of the day.
In fact we took the opportunity to have a stroll down to photograph 45041 which wasn’t taking part in the gala but was parked up nearby.

Our first haulage was 33116 and this was enjoyed for the short run to Loughborough.

33116 arriving at Quorn:
33116_2016.03.19_2_Quorn by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After that it was type two action as we had a round trip to Leicester North behind the excellent 27056 (I know it carries 5401 at the moment, but I always use TOPs ID when I can).

27056 later in the day:
27056_2016.03.19_1_Loughborough by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The 27 was excellent, as always, but that wasn’t the only reason we had done this service.
We had an interest in being on that particular stock.

The rake of stock in question was the one booked to be hauled by 37714.
We knew that would be popular and so doing the 27 meant we easily got a seat before hordes of cranks appeared.
The 27 was busy enough, but we knew the Tractor would be crammed.

A full round trip on 37714 was thoroughly enjoyed before we did it again to Leicester and then back as far as Rothley, a nice total of 25 miles or thereabouts.

We have a winner :)
37714_2016.03.19_08_Leicester North by Phil Wood, on Flickr

31563 was then sampled to Leicester and back to Loughborough before the final, and best, loco of the day.
25035 was a beast :)
We did this to Leicester and back to the car at Quorn.

What a monster:
25035_2016.03.19_2_Loughborough by Phil Wood, on Flickr

So, an excellent day.
We did everything bar the 20, which has been had many times before and no doubt will be again, got some decent mileage behind a winner and enjoyed some fantastic aural entertainment from 25035.

Obviously getting a winning 37 was great but for me you can't beat a type 2 at a heritage line, they're perfect for that environment.

A decent day on the GCR there, I must say the jealousy factor with 25 haulage, not to mention the non-ETH 37!
A bit of heating wouldn't have gone amiss mind you - the temperature was at the lower end of the brass monkey scale.

A very enjoyable day though, particularly passing a thrashing Rat at a closing speed of 50mph or so at Swithland.

Indeed yes, I forgot to mention that!
The fact that the GCR has lots of double track makes for some excellent passes :)

Mega jealous of that! I think the 27 would have been my favourite thing there but the rat and Crompton would have been close too!

What a CRACKING Day out that was, a 25, 27 an a 37, sounds like a summer Saturday in Carlisle in the early 80's, the 33 would've been well lost in Carlisle then though. Sounded like an awesome day.

Cracking read again

As we approached the end of March, a quarter of the way through the year, my scoring rate was a bit disappointing.
With a target for the year of 366 winners I should be around 92 after three months and I was sat on 58.
So when Mrs 13 suggested I break up the bank holiday weekend by having a few hours out I knew what I had to do.

Somewhere close, with guaranteed winners a-plenty?
It had to be a visit to the Manchester Metrolink system.

My needs list for this network ran to three figures and my only recorded runs were on the city centre section.
Thus, as is so often the case, I needed many stops, including ones I’d done previously but not recorded.

I was up and out early on Saturday morning and drove to Brighouse.
With Manchester Victoria shut for engineering work I decided to head over on TPE, hoping that I might get a seat.
144020 was the first haulage of the day, taking me for the few miles to Huddersfield.
I tend to avoid TPE as I can’t stand the overcrowding.
Many times over the last few years I’ve gone to Leeds with the intention of getting a few winning 185s, done one to Huddersfield and then decided I’d had enough and moved on to something else.
Thus, I still required eight of the fleet.
I was very happy, therefore, when a virtually empty 185114 arrived to take me to Piccadilly.
Sat down!

Once at Piccadilly it was downstairs to purchase my ticket from the machine and I was off on my tram chase.
First up was a double set, 3033 and 3006, these were working to Etihad Campus and I took them all the way.
I’d never been on the Ashton line before, so it was winning track as well.
As the line was required I took brand new 3110 through to the end at Ashton-Under-Lyne.

My moves now consisted of doing required trams to new shacks in order to clear that particular branch.

I won’t bore everyone with a lot of “then I did this”, sufficient to say there were lots of winners, including a tram even newer than 3110.

My moves after getting off 3110:
3098 Ashton – Audenshaw
3111 Audenshaw – Ashton West

I believe this is the newest tram currently in service:
Manchester Tram 3111_2016.03.26_2_Ashton West by Phil Wood, on Flickr

3111 Ashton West – Cemetery Road
3085 Cemetery Road – Ashton Moss
3101 Ashton Moss – Clayton Hall
3104 Clayton Hall – Droylsden
3106 Droylsden – Velopark

Velopark sounds like something from a science fiction film:
Manchester Tram 3106_2016.03.26_Velopark by Phil Wood, on Flickr

3102 Velopark – Edge Lane
3093 Edge Lane – Etihad Campus

At this point I decided to bail off a full and standing 3093 as I knew there would be an empty pair right behind them, starting from Etihad Campus.
I assume that most people on the full single trams were going to Manchester and not Rochdale (the destination for all the services from Ashton), so it surprised me that no one else got off in order to get a guaranteed seat two minutes later.

I still had two shacks to cover in order to clear the whole of that branch and so it was 3044 and 3027 from Etihad Campus to New Islington.
Another pair followed, 3037 and 3052, which I took all the way to Holt Town and that was it for Ashton line, all stops visited.
I flagged the next Manchester service as it was a dud, wedged, single tram and caught 3052 and 3037 back to Piccadilly instead.
Obviously I took this opportunity to sit in 3052, having done 3037 earlier.

I figured I still had a bit of time before I headed home and, as I noticed my shack scores for the year now stood at 98, I knew I just had to get another couple in.
Winning pair 3081 and 3086 arrived so I boarded the latter (I usually go in the rear unit of a required pair) and I took these to shack 99 Pomona.

muh muh muh my Pomona (with apologies to "The Knack") :)
Manchester Tram 3086_2016.03.26_1_Pomona by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I just missed another pair there and the next one was in fifteen minutes, so I had a stroll down to the banks of the River Irwell to enjoy some peace and quiet at a rare area of tranquillity in a bustling city.
Consecutively numbered 3061 & 3062 took me back to the throng of people at Deansgate-Castlefield, one of the stops that I know I’ve done previously, but now it’s properly recorded.
Because I had no previous record of it, that was counted as shack 100 of the year, although just to be certain I jumped on board 3003 and took this to Old Trafford.
I originally intended to go to Trafford Bar but a tram was pulling out as 3003 arrived so I figured I might as well carry on to the next stop.

I noticed that there’s a couple of sports stadiums next to the Old Trafford stop, one is the home of Yorkshire’s great cricketing rivals, Lancashire, the one beyond that being presumably for some other sport. ;)

The next tram I did was 3053 on a Deansgate terminator.
I was heading home now but couldn’t resist another new pair 3028 and 3020 which were going to somewhere that I’ve forgotten, but not via Piccadilly.
I bailed off these at Market Street and finished on yet another winner, 3050 back to Piccadilly.
My winning run wasn’t over yet, though.
One of my last seven 185s, 185104 was on a Hull service and that’s what I took back to Yorkshire, although this was a bit busier than 185114 had been and I had to stand as far as Stalybridge.
It was back to more usual traction to finish the day with as I had 142017 from Huddersfield to Brighouse.

After that it was home in time for tea whilst watching Pointless followed by a couple of episodes of Joann Fletcher’s excellent “Immortal Egypt”
When I counted up my numbers I had roped in an incredible twenty-six winners, making my figures for the year to date a much more respectable eighty-four.
With a few big moves planned, it looks like achieving my target might be possible after all and if the figures don’t look good come November/December, it’ll be back to Manchester I go :)

Another excellent read! St Peters Square is due to reopen in Autumn so there should be a higher frequency of trams then.
