Glad to hear that the move cured the previous week's monkeyshines (you do know I sell and mend hardware stuff for a living don't you! :D) and Dingle was done.

Funnily enough, I did think of giving you a bell, but I'd taken the handle off to see if the lock could be freed up with some WD40 and when I found it couldn't we were left with a door we daren't shut it and it was a bit urgent so I stayed guard whilst Ruth nipped to a local locksmith and bought a replacement.
The plumbing was more to do with the location of holes in the panel between the dishwasher and the pipes, I borrowed my dad's jigsaw to make them bigger so the "anti-flood" device would fit through.
This meant using it with me twisted into a very uncomfortable position and having to sit on the floor with my head above the sink, meaning I was unable to see what I was doing.
Using a potentially dangerous power tool when you're contorted and unable to see is not my favourite pastime!
The less said about the monkey fighting alarm the better :)

But I can't believe your reason for heading to Cardiff...

Four years ago I would have thought it impossible and it's a long story but when I realised I only needed a few to have ridden on them all it just had to be done :)

Great read as usual 55013, nice to get some loco hauled mileage too. Shame about the hassles at home, always the same, once one thing goes, everything seems to follow suit, however I must admit, I had a bit of a giggle at the, will that idiot switch off the alarm comment.:lol::lol:
Ok so it wasn't as productive as you'd have probably wanted, due to them signalling issues but at least you got a fair ole percentage of your aims and a bit of R n R into the bargain too.

Thanks, I was satisfied although there's always room for more scores :)

Rather jealous of your trips to that part of Wales! Good read and great pics :)

Thanks.

that is a great game isn't it?

Agreed.

Quite good fun scratching all the shacks on it as well...:D

(Method - copy shack list into spreadsheet, add a column of random number generation "=RND(0:1,000,000), sort sheet into order based on this column and start at the top. Takes a few weeks and doesn't half boost your Class 26 mileage)

Hellfire is brilliant, I'd recommend it to any crank.
I must admit I haven't thought of shack scoring yet, although I started from scratch with the realise of version 3.0.33 so I'm back to chasing some common locos.

My lordz, I miss Hellfire! I need to see if it will work on my Galaxy tablet actually, not played it in over 5 years. If it would work on my phone I'd have such brilliant fun on my commutes!

I believe it works on some tablets, so give it a try.
It's changed a lot since five years ago, with the addition of railtours, shunter moves and a variety of scenarios.
It's truly hellfire :)

Sorry to sound like an utter newbie but what is 'hellfire' except a bashers term?

The fires of Hell or lake of fire, terms used to describe Hell - "Going through hellfire" was originally a soldiering term to describe a huge battle

All is revealed at http://www.railrover.co.uk/
You can download it and play for free, although you risk being caught by the BTP until you buy a a ticket (ie, pay for the game) :)
It's not got fancy graphics but it beats any other computer game as far as I'm concerned.

It is!
A couple of things worth mentioning if you decide to download it.
Firstly, some anti virus software flags it up as malware.
Mine did and I was a bit worried so I posted on the game's forum and was reassured that it was a false positive and there's nothing nasty hidden within.
Second, the forum, available in a link from the home page, is well worth joining.
Any bugs or other issues can be reported there, you can also pick up tips on good moves, etc.
Lastly, if you decided to purchase the game you should also join (for free) http://hellfiremoves.co.uk/ were you can upload all your moves, see the stats and view other people's logs.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it, although you might be a bit miffed at the lack of HST numbers!

Saturday the 27th of February provided 45135 and I with the opportunity to do a bash, courtesy of Northern’s £10 newspaper offer.
It will be interesting to see if the imminent change of franchise holder sees the end of these useful tickets, I for one hope not.

Anyway, we headed to the Land of Perpetual Farce, or the Cumbrian Coast as it’s sometimes called.
Things started well enough, I drove to 45135’s house and we went forward to Carnforth in his car.
We knew that the re-railing of 60021 was causing some problems, with the first loco hauled service being cancelled, but we hoped things would get better by the time we got there.
The plan was simple. Catch a DMU North, pick up the first 37 back to Barrow, stay on the same set up to St Bees then cover the second loco to Lancaster, hang around there for an hour and a bit before catching it back to Carnforth and home.
156484 took us from Carnforth to Millom, which wasn’t a bad start as I needed 57484 for a ride in, so that’s where we sat.
Leaving Barrow we passed 37401 stood in the naughty siding after failing earlier in the week.
The first sign of trouble came when we bailed at Millom.

DMU 156484_2016.02.27_1_Millom by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The PIS showed that the next Northbound service, the 12.22, was cancelled.
This was a bit disconcerting as that is the loco hauled turn that we planned to do.
However, our hopes were raised as the Southbound train was more or less on time and as this forms the aforementioned service, surely the display was wrong.
37423 turned up and we did that as planned, only to find en route (when one of us could get a phone signal) that the return was indeed cancelled, the set was to run ECS to Workington and pick up the service from there as there was no guard available to cover Barrow to Workington.
A fester at Barrow was now inevitable and we looked for a way out.

Yet another photo of a moving train that I should be on:
37423_2016.02.27_4_Barrow-In-Furness by Phil Wood, on Flickr

45135 came up with a plan of doing the next service to Roose and picking up a Carlisle unit from there.
We had a plus six at Roose and this went out of the window when 156451 arrived quarter of an hour late.
Naturally we binned that move and just caught the Carlisle from Barrow.
This was dud for everything 156479.
It was now a case of seeing how far up we could get for the second loco.
The second hauled set was also having trouble and had left Carlisle thirty late, although this was as a result of the 60021 incident rather than any issue with train itself.
We bailed from 156479 at Sellafield and saw the 37 was expected in at 14.03.

DMU 156479_2016.02.27_1_Sellafield by Phil Wood, on Flickr

At 14.05 the display disappeared and the following service came up in its place.
Neither of us could get a phone signal and so we knew nothing.
At about 14.20 our train (due originally at 13.35) re-appeared on the PIS, now expected at 14.28.
We both breathed a big sigh of relief when we saw a headlight in the distance and soon identified that it was coming from a DBSO.
Forty-five minutes stuck at Sellafield is about forty too long.

I'm a basher get me out of here. please!
DBSO 9707_2016.02.27_3_Sellafield by Phil Wood, on Flickr

We were expecting further farces but nothing went wrong from now on.
37409 was taken through to Lancaster, getting there 43 minutes late.
The return was on time, thanks to the booked lengthy layover there and we were back home at a reasonable hour.

It's getting difficult to get different views of 37409:
37409_2016.02.27_6_Lancaster by Phil Wood, on Flickr

So in the end we had an enjoyable day, although we would have preferred it if our plan had come off.
I scored two new shacks and we had some decent 37 haulage, 37409 now sits on 963.69 miles, so I’m hoping to sample it again soon to get it past the thousand :)

Apart from the farce, a good little trip out. I would love some 37 thrash again, been something like 7 months since my last sample!

45 minutes in Sellafield, nasty!

Good day, other than the delays/cancelled services etc :(

I see the white duck tape has been out and about again ;)

I'm surprised you lasted 45 minutes at Sellafield without a visit from a security guard

A good trip out that and a good read as usual, the delays obviously hindered things but it certainly seemed to come together, 45mins at Sellafield brings one word to mind, Brrrrrr.
37409, (OH My)LORD H, has been the thrashiest of the tractors I've experienced on the Cumbrian Coast, so im definitely a tad jealous.
Was talk of another loco working being added, however that was before Arriva got the contract.
Watch out for 37402 too, shes got her large logo pyjama's back now too.

Interesting that Normanton has come up in this thread, I was passing nearby on Friday after work and had a quick check on RTT. Saw a couple of light engine moves so stopped off for a photo, you certainly wouldn't be catching a HST from there now, they've shortened the platform and the old section is very overgrown. I hadn't realised what a (relatively) large station it once was.

It was most enjoyable.
I still think of 37409 as "Loch Awe" though :)

Funnily enough, I never noticed that until you pointed it out!

The same thought occurred to me, but, maybe because we didn't wonder off from the station area, we didn't attract attention.

I've seen a photo of 37402, I must admit it doesn't seem quite right, somehow.
Certainly the nameplates are oddly positioned for a large logo machine.
I do wonder if they're putting a fleet of LL machines together in order to disguise the fact that it's DRS that are providing the traction, what with all the farces that keep happening on that line.

As for Normanton station, it looked a bit different when I visited it 35 years ago.
I do remember having to walk over the footbridge to get to the platform.
There's a shot of it from around that time on the excellent Derby Sulzers website.
A direct link to the photo (hopefully) is: http://www.derbysulzers.com/normantonsouthdmu.jpg
Not mine, obviously.

I like island platforms, makes doing tight connections that little bit easier :)

(As IIRC on Saturdays it's served by the hourly Leeds - Sheffield via Barnsley stoppers, which give a +2 at Normanton

I didn't realise that problems were persisting with the Cumbrian Coast 37s. I recall some initial teething troubles with the locos when first introduced, and then briefly again when first paired up with the DBSOs, but I had otherwise thought that things were running quite smoothly.

I certainly haven't faced any issues on the two days (once with top and tail 37s and once with DBSOs) that I've traipsed about on the 37s: The only delay I've faced was at Foxfield, which wasn't an issue as the signalman shouted the length of the delay down to us from his 'box, and so we all nipped back into the pub for another pint. :)

Indeed, I can't get my head around the new-fangled names on the 37/4s.

It's been pointed out on the relevant thread that the numbers are also in the wrong font, and that DRS 37/4s have had their small bodyside windows removed, which certainly doesn't help the effect in combination with the incongruously sited nameplates.

Sellafield eh? Didn't even know there was a station there! Always assumed it was just an old power station.

A day on the 37s sounds great of course :)

Assumed it was like Bradwell or similar - back end of nowhere and 90% car park!
I guess that there must be plenty who do drive, but the trains do seem to be well patronised with workers from the plant and I'm not sure that the local Lakes road network could cope with the concentrated demand at shift changeover times if everyone were to drive.

Although then again, Hope cement works, as an alternative example, in the heart of the Peak District, doesn't seem to have any issues with the high level of car-orientated commuting, despite a comparable surrounding network of secondary roads.

I was up there on the 23rd and the loco hauled services were not running to plan. The 0515 off Carlisle was cancelled which blew my plan out the window. I finally saw 37409 running later but I had got back onto my plan and didn't deviate. At least you got Sellafield scratched. That was also part of my plan!

The 37 hauled trains have had patchy reliability, to say the least.
Not all of it the fault of the locos, but I believe the services on the coast have got a rapidly worsening reputation among those that use it regularly.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

On Friday evening my wife received a phone call from one of her colleagues who is currently off work with a stress related illness.
This lady is suffering badly and Mrs 13, ever a compassionate soul, offered to meet up with her on Saturday and offer some support & advice.
Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth I immediately seized upon the chance of doing my own form of stress relief.

With any prospect of me achieving my 2016 challenge rapidly disappearing I needed to get some winners in the book and so I decided I would head to Birmingham.
I was up and out by 07.30 and drove to Solihull where I purchased my Daytripper.
I knew that the 68 diagrams would be worked by two from 68009, 68013 and 68014 so came up with a plan.
I would view the 10.04 off Solihull and, if it was 68009, would do it to Leamington, but otherwise I would give it a miss.
I had only previously had number 9 from Leamington to Solihull, in the dark, and it was required for a photo so felt I could justify the time penalty.
In the event it was 68014 that produced, so it was my painful duty to watch it leave.
I was sorely tempted to do it, but knew I needed to knuckle down and get some scores on the doors.

I can't believe I'm not on it:
68014_2016.03.05_Solihull by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After photographing the cat depart I boarded 168214 and took that Moor Street.
I’ve had all the LM 172s and all bar one of the 168s, so there was no point in staying on that side of the city.
The short stroll to New Street was therefore “enjoyed” and the day’s first winner, 323217 was quickly roped in.
Now, where to bail?
The advantage of being new to the shack scratching game is that I can pick and choose where to go without too much fuss.
My spurious reason for choosing Tipton was that I’ve been a reader of Viz magazine for many years and as anyone that has been a reader of that esteemed publication will know Tipton used to feature quite regularly.
I had a quick look round for Hugo Guthrie but he was nowhere to be seen.

No sign of Mayor Guthrie:
EMU 323217_2016.03.05_Tipton by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After taking in the sights of Tipton I quickly left, on dud 170632.
This service spends a good ten minutes sat at New Street before going on to Walsall and so after looking on RTT I decided to bail there and do a Cross City service to my next required shack.
I bailed, went upstairs and found that I couldn’t get to platform 11 without going out through the barriers and back in again further on.
Genius.
Anyway, I got down to platform 11 and discovered the train was delayed, with no ETA, because of a failed freight.
Bah.
It was back upstairs, through one set of barriers, through the second set and back onto 170632.
Although I still need one coach of this unit I went back to the same one I had sat in from Tipton as it felt like cheating if I’d got on the required one!

The second new station of the day was Aston and a short wait was had there before 323205 arrived, ostensibly on a Redditch service, although I knew it was unlikely to make it that far.
Sure enough, once at New Street the announcements began about the train not going beyond Northfield.
They were also announcing that services to Lichfield were all cancelled until further notice, so I elected to make my way over to a Liverpool service that was formed of required 350115.
I knew that the next service from Walsall was a required 323 and so I stayed on the 350 to Wolverhampton, where I knew I could purchase supplies, in order to return on another winner.
Sure enough 323240 produced as hoped and I took this to another new shack, Witton.
323216 was next up and this was sample through to Dudley Port.
I now had something different on the agenda and so my final winning 323, 323208 was taken for the short hop to Smethwick Galton Bridge.

323208 coming into Dudley Port:
EMU 323208_2016.03.05_Dudley Port by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After heading upstairs it wasn’t a long fester before 172340 arrived to take me on to The Hawthorns and a bit of tram bashing.
If there’s anything guaranteed to increase your winnings in a short space of time it’s a stint on a tram network.
Especially when you’ve only had one of the current fleet before.
So, it was with some annoyance that I viewed the first arrival and it was the only one I’d previously had, number 30.
I let it go safe in the knowledge that the next one would be a winner.
It was 20 that produced, enabling me to score The Hawthorns tram stop and shortly after Dudley Street, Guns Village.
Consecutively numbered 21 was next up.

A winner approaches:
Birmingham Tram 21_2016.03.05_1_Dudley Street by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I took this as far as Trinity Way before 30 reappeared.
I contemplated flagging it but time was running out so I took it to West Bromwhich Central to score the shack.
Winner 23 was next, to Dartmouth Street.
Number 24 then arrived and my plan was to do this to The Hawthorns in order to make a 172 to Solihull so that I could cover the Chiltern 165 on the Leamington to Moor Street service as 165s provide by far the biggest list of my DMU requirements.
Sadly, my plan was put to bed when I boarded 24 and saw the ticket man stood next to a broken window and talking into his radio.
Apparently, some scrotes had just been chucking rocks at it and so the set was taken out of service at the next stop, Lodge Road. It did mean I got an unexpected new shack in, mind.
I now had a quandary.
Everyone off 24 would be boarding the following service, which would make it too wedged for me, so I elected to head the other way
Dud 21 was taken to dud Dartmouth Street.

I had a look on RTT and calculated that my 165 plan could still come off.
Another dud, number 20, was taken and my last chance of getting to Solihull for the 165, a pair of 172/2s, pulled into The Hawthorns parallel with the tram.
Would I make it across in time?
Nope.
Never mind.
Winning tram 28 eased my pain by taking me to Kenrick Park as compensation.
I could still make the 165 from Moor Street on its journey back to Leamington, but I had been hoping to get a ride in both coaches if it was a score.

My last tram of the day proved to be another requirement in the shape of 36 and I took this to Jewellery Quarter before heading over to dud for everything 172343 through to Moor Street.
In the event, I soon discovered that the 165 was a dud, although I needed one coach, so the ne’er do wells actions had lead to me scoring two more trams and a couple of tram stops.
Not that that makes it alright, of course.
I sat in coach 58820 of 165020, thus clearing the unit, back to Solihull and a stress free drive home, much better now that the roadworks have shrunk a bit.

I arrived home just as Mrs 13 was preparing tea and she had a surprise for me in that she had purchased crocodile burgers!
They turned out to be very nice.
:)
So, in summary, six winning mainline units, the same number of new trams, four required stations and seven tram stops roped in.
Not too bad for an impromptu day out.

That sounds like a good time on my local patch but I can't believe you flagged Gingertom at Solihull!

Unless you only need two, neither of which you've ever actually seen after ages on the tram network!

It was very painful, believe me.

Indeed, but for me, who only started seriously doing trams a few months ago, all the tram networks provide rich pickings :)

Mind you, I did have a day on the Birmingham Metro about ten years ago (no Chiltern locos to bash back then, of course), no record of the moves I did, but I did get a fair few of the original ones for haulage.
I believe all the 01-16 batch have gone now, is that right?
