At last, for the 1st time this year, I'll be out and about, all commemnces on February 1st. I was looking to go elsewhere but when I factor in the cost of hotels/guesthouses, this allows me at least to be in my own bed at night and get me out a fair ole distance. Sure I'll temper the savings from overnight stays, into the odd add on somewhere else, outside those vast boundaries. This will be my first full North East Rover, since sometime in 1990, spurred on from a previous one, where 56030 and 47475 (11/11/89) worked in tandem over the S&C in the days when BR had sense and saw if they put rare loco's on turns on a Saturday, they could make a fair few bob in the quiet months from us enthusiasts, prety much, as no doubt Northern probably are nowadays with the 37's over the Cumbrian Coast.

Hopes

Hoping to clear out the odds and sods from my NL requirements, a certain 158, a gronk, a couple of 144's and 155's, also a 321 and a handful of 333's for sight, would be nice. Sheffield's City trams and the Meridians are also on the agenda too, as well as hitting a couple of freight hot spots too. Bumping into my last 2 red sheds would be very nice indeed but I'm sure I'll embrace all cops for sight, all to willingly too. Lastlly getting some required stuff for haulage, goes without saying and should 350403 turn up in Carlisle. I'm sure a ride to Penrith or Oxlenholme, to clear them for haulage and if I'm in the area, it would be rude, not to sample some action on the 37's, wether requireed or not. As usual my self imposed rule will be in effect, see rule 47403 below.

Rule 47403

Same rule applies for me as usual, no pacer (yes I know they maybe history sooner rather than later but I hate the damn things- sorry to HMS Ark Royal and Blindtraveller but that's just my opinion) or voyager(I hate them too but sometimes you have to bite the bullet) haulage, unless entirely necessary, however their country cousin's the Meridian, maybe ridden, if I decide to go over the Derby/Nottingham way too, basically because I've yet to ride one.

Can't wait to be honest.

Feb 1st just happens to be when Northern floods the network with as many pacers as can be sent into service...

However, how are you going to get the 144s if not riding a pacer - just clocking them up by visual means?

Just for sight skipper, if theyre attached to something like a 158, then I'll sit in the 158.
Plenty other units to ride behind, still need to ride on a 155, 321 and 322's.

The Meridians are far superior to the Voyagers, even though they are a broadly similar unit. I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

Have an excellent trip! I must echo the comments on the Meridians, excellent units but not a patch on the VP185 HSTs that they share the MML with ;) You looking at catching the Sunday Meridian to York or heading into more foreign territory?

There's this here, http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C61498/2016/02/07/advanced

1142 off Sheffield, into Donny 1209, departs 1217, into York 1248.

If you're looking for more foreign territory, from experience, the 1029 off Sheffield is 7 coaches, 1049 is 5 coaches, 1129 is 10 coaches (2x5 coaches) and the 1149 is 5 coaches, just something to bear in mind if you want a quieter service, although I have never encountered particularly bad crowding.

If you still need it, I believe 67013 has been hanging round Doncaster this last week.

I sincerly hope so fishquinn.

Booked a nights stay in that BnB you suggested in Barnetby for Tuesday. I'll put it in the report, after I've done the Rover.

1 more shift to do, then I can unleash the reigns and get out n about on the 08.59 Monday morning. Getting quite excited if Im totally honest. The very last one of these rangers I had, way back in 1990, started with 47484 Isambard Kingdom Brunel to York, somehow I don't think, it'll start in a similar vein this time but it'll certainly be good to dust off the cobwebs. If 67013 is in Donnie, on Monday, I'll be delighted.

If it starts with a brush (on a service train) then I think I'll join you!

Maybe a tram though?

Trip Report will be up sometime after Friday, had a major change of plan today, had to dash back to the North East, nothing serious or life threatening but it curtailed a good day indeed.
Many many thanks to fishquinn for the heads up on the B n B in Barnetby, top drawer place to stay. A one I'd certainly advise any of you good folk to look at if your heading that way.
One things for sure its been damn windy and at times bloody freezing.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Let's Get the Party started then. North East Rover, Day 1, Part 1
After the absolute chore of getting the week of work over and getting out on the rails again, I was lookig forward to getting started.
This would've taken place in January but a mixture of things at work, saw my holidays cancelled due to a staff shortage, thankfully I saw the headlights coming in the distance and got off the line, so to speak and avoided being hit in the pocket, so held back booking any accomodation.

Monday mornig, Im up before the alarm, never happens, when I'm going to work strangely. Im up today though, showered, shaved and fed by quarter to 6, double check the bag, before filling the flask and make aother cuppa, have a ciggy in the back yard, noticing how windy and cold it is, an HST flies past but its too dark to ID it, same with the 2 GB sheds that go past too, one about 6 and the other about 20 past. Im ready for the off at quarter to 7. I get some new batteries (I refuse to pay WH Smiths prices for them in Central Station) for the dictaphone, some pop, crisps and a big bag of haribo's from the paper shop by the bus stop and 2 mins later, Im on the bus to Central, sorry to you bus cranks, Im none the wiser as to what it is, other than its a single decker and its route is the number 53.

15mins later Im stood on Platform 3, with Rover in hand and a cuppa from the flask, it's blowing an absolute gale, however for now, everything is running to time. Maybe its just me, must be getting soft in my old age. As usual the dictaphone is out, whilst taking down the numbers of the VTEC stock, nothing jumps out at me, nowt new, saying, I'm sure I need this or that from that rake, even the Grand Central ECS from Heaton to Sunderland(43467/43423) rake is a dud, mind you, for some reason, I keep managing to see the same one all the time. <(<(

However the time flies by and eventually the 08.59 comes round the corner by the Keep and will I be rewarded by some new winning HST's for the 1st journey of the Rover and of 2016, well, in short, No. 43316/43238 are my chariots to York, the NRM liveried 238, is needed for the livery ad plate, so at least some small consolation but not much. I find a table seat to myself in the quiet coach, for the unstartling journey south. At Tyne Yard, a 325 covers any locos visible from being ID'd, even the gronk, 08752, which is required for sight but I just haven't had time or the inclination, to get down there in the daylight hours to see it, was hidden somewhere, probably behind the 325. Between Darlington and York, the wind absolutely buffets us, to the point we start to slow, Im too busy checking to see if I've scored any coachig stock, that I miss ID'ing a DB red shed going onto the avoider at Northallerton, its not all bad news, though, I realise I've clicked a few Mark 4's out of a rake I'd seen earlier, which shocks me but pleases me nonetheless.

Arrival at York is about 2 down and I couldve hopped straight onto winning, well, 2nd time round, 91109 Sir Bobby Robson to Donnie but I flag it, as the plan is to get to Leeds and in particular, go past Neville Hill. A quick shufty round York and a ciggie break, reveals nothig for sight, which is a shame because I normally manage to snaffle a 150 here, I was also kinda hoping one of my last 3 required 144's might be here too but alas no. There's plenty winners for haulage on view but none, I'd particularly want to spend over an hour getting to Leeds on. 66301 ambles through with a engineers train before my next chariot arrives in the form of winner 185134 to whisk me off to Leeds.
Fortunately the move pays off, cop 08908 has come out of hiding at NL and is duly scored. Result!!!!!

I jump off 185134 and on the opposite platform 321901 duly leaves to Doncaster, damn, I would've got on that but I maage to cop 66503 coming through the station, on what I can't remember, as I take in whats knocking about and head to the EMU platforms, 322481 is at the buffers but locked out, hmm that'd have been a nice move too, however I'm looking for it's sister 322482 for sight, unfortunately its not here though. I decide a Shipley move is the order of the morning and ready to go, is all round winner 333002 so I jump aboard and off we go to Shipley, with its weird platform set up, I decide to walk up to the end of platform 5, to see if anything of note comes off the S&C too, however as I'm walking halfway down said Platform, winner 333005 pulls in, so I jump about that for a short hop to Frizinghall or Freezinghall, I re-christened it. I make the small journey out the station up the road across the bridge and down onto the other platform and jump back on returning 333002 back to Shipley, enjoying the warmth as I got on, not that it lasted long, bailing at Shipley and making my way over to what I call the S&C Platforms. 66717 flies through with a coal train, whilst I position myself at the end of the platform to see whats coming in and see what curves off onto platform 5. What would've been a required 333015 went into platform 5 but a few minutes later I was rewarded with(AR)winner and long time gap filler 158787 for the journey back to Leeds, to say I was a happy bunny, is a major understatement.

An excellent start to the trip! Enjoying the read so far too.

158787 fell for both of us in only a few days, that's a little unusual.

Don't get me started on how many MK4s I still need for sight, way too many!

Excellent read, sounds like a good start so far.

And the bus is a Wright Streetlite thing, I get the 58 myself so don't have to endure them

North East Rover Day 1 Part 2

I get to Leeds and Im straving, so I head off the station and head to Greggs, I come away with 2 chicken bakes and a doughnut, I put them in my bag and head back to the station.

As usual the Rover doesnt work with the barriers at Leeds, it'd be a shock if it did, I'm let through by the guy there and I ask him why rovers never ever work with these barriers? I met with a shrug of the shoulders and I dunno. I scan the boards and look for a move over to Sheffield via the Pennistone branch, for a move to Wakefield Kirkgate, basically to have a nose whats on Midland Road. I see one due off in 5mins, so I make over the bridge and jump onto (AR)winner 150270, I quite like the 150's and spirited run up to Wakefield Kirkgate is had, dictaphone at the ready, we pass Midland Road and I manage to get the 7 loco's I can see, no cops among them though. I bail of the 150 and make over to the 144 on the island platform, its 144014, damn, sp close, Im after 015,. I make my way through the underpass, to see how long I have to wait for the next one back to Leeds, that isn't a pacer of any sort, even if it was 1 of the 3 I'm after. I get to the top of the ramp, turn round and I'm greeted by a 158 coming in, oh smashing that'll do I tell myself, even more sp when it's winner 158848. The second trip past Midland Road reveals nothing more than I've already viewed but there was boatloads more round the back.

Im back in Leeds quicker than expected, even so, it was depressing seeing the sight of a VTEC rake of mark 4's heading south with 2 EMT power cars on, as I was pulling into Leeds on the 158. I thought, oh well, may as well make a move to Donnie and hopefully catch them coming back. However that was easier said, than done, I soon discovered, the ECML had fell down spectacularly, a mixture of the battering winds and a points and signalling failure further south, had kyboshed everything, 1 train from Leeds to the capital had already bit the dust. After god knows how long and even comtemplating riding the souped up tin can that is 144012 somewhere or riding some winner 185 to Huddersfield, eventually dud 91118 arrived and it was announced that seat reservations, were invalid, so to the awaiting massed crowd, it was get on and get a seat anywhere you can. sod this, I jumped on and stood in the vestibule and made hay to Donnie. If I thought riding a dud blunt was bad, as we got out the station winner zing 43272 and unknown partner, were coming in. I swore silently to myself.

At Donnie it became apparent how bad things had fallen on the ECML, the smallest delay from the capital was 50mins, I had some time doing a bit spotting, unfortunately 67013 wasn't here, apparently it had buggered off to Wigan<(<(<( When I got there it was slow, boring even, never thought I say that about Doncaster, nothing was getting through. I should've went to Sheffield to be honest, I thought go to Connisbrough for a lok see if theres anything on Roberts Road before it gets dark, I went over to platform 8 and it was a 142, no thanks, I stayed put, then a dud 185 came in, again I stayed put again, back over to platform 4, this time it was a dud blunt, so that kyboshed a move to York, platform 8 and double pacers, a 142 and 144012, arrived, they were unsurprisingly winners, given I avoid them like the plague, my head said go on, jump on the 144, tough it out, my heart screamed, you dare and your a hypocrite, needless to say, I let my heart rule my head. Just as well too because dud 43367 had winner43310 with it, I decided to get to Wakefield Westgate and hopefully come back on required 321901, which so far I'd managed to miss twice today.Needless to say it was chocker, so it was standing in the vestibule again. I bailed at Wakefield in hope that more stuff would be getting through and coming this way, I was wrong one dud blunt a voyager and a couple of pacers, meant a bit of a fester, I went to Costa and got a cup of Hot Chocolate to warm me through and get a ciggy, the word Hot should've been removed and replaced with the word tepid. I went and had a look at the boards and saw the words Cross Country HST was due in 15mins, okey dokey, theres my move to Leeds in hand, even that was an hour down. I positioned myself at the end of the Leeds bound platform, so I could see what powercars were at each end, it was blowing a hooley and the wind was icy, I was numb and regardless of what they were, I was getting on it, even if it was just to stave off hypothermia. Fortunately I was in luck, double winners 43285 and 43301were a welcome sight indeed, not just to get out the freezing cold. I could've taken this all the way home if I'd wanted but I wasn't done just yet, slightly perished I'll gladly admit but not beaten. Having just seemingly thawed out enough, were in Leeds, where I bailed and made haste having a butchers round the EMU platforms, I was rewarded when my last of the Northern 321's was parked up, 321903 was duly copped as was, 155342, leaving just 341 to find now. It got better too because parked in a bay, locked out was one of my required 144's, 144022, leaves 15 and 18 to find over the next 3 days, surely thats doable.

Bouyed by 3 winners for sight, I saw todays rascal, ready to depart to Doncaster, I made haste over the bridge and climbed aboard the required 321901. A maiden voyage on the 321's for me, I sat in the motor coach obviously, in a largely empty train. Have to say I quite liked it too, however that sound when we stopped as it was ticking over sounded like a 4yr old child banging away on pots and pans in a makeshift drum kit, all I could think of was the duracel advert, where the toy rabbits play the drums to show how long duracel lasts longer over other cheaper batteries. However it was bearable and all too soon we were in Donnie, where thoughts of returning home, it was after 8 and after a look at the boards, things hadn't improved in fact they'd probably got worse, my intended train at 21.20 was cancelled, marvelous, the 10pm one wasn't due till 22.51 and was getting later by the minute, however all was not lost, the 19.33 was due in just after 9, so I was going home on that regardless of what it was. I was going to do a filler move but thought better of it, the next 50mins or so brought 6 trains in, three unneeded sheds, a winning 170 and 2 158's, one dud, one required, If I was gonna move anywhere, which I wasn't.
Shortly after 21.00 in rolled double winning zings, 43309 and 43317, for the journey home. I managed to get myself a table seat and put my phone on charge, it was running on fumes. I sat back and contemplated the day, it had been a tad frustrating, with the ECML falling down, quite spectacularly but I'd enjoyed myself no end, I'd got plenty winners for haulage and a fair cops over the course of day. Even so, when I got home and discovered, I'd missed 73967 73968 92038 and 92010 in convoy from Polmadie to Doncaster, i was a little miffed indeed, the 73's especially would've been massive cops. Nevermind thats life, I got home at 23.30 and devoured curry rice and chips and promptly climbed into bed, zonking out very soon after midnight.

Thanks for the kind words lads, much appreciated. Yeah totally unexpected 158787 tech, greatfully recieved nonetheless mind. Well thanks to you too Richard for the bus gen, I'll sleep a lot easier knowing that;)
I forgot to add, during the making of this, no zing was window hanged at all.

Mega delays there! Sounds like a good first day, even if you missed the EDs and 67013 was in Wigan! As for the last sentence - How couldn't you?! ;)

It was fishquinn, yeah shame about the EDa and the skip. Delays were manic, the tram I went home on was about 85 down into Newcastle and wasn't due into Waverley till 00.21.
