Should all major stations have a pub?

Yes but you could say that for many other pubs that are charging a lot more for a pint! Not only that if you don't like it take it back and ask for something else!

Yes I agree totally, and besides, Wetherspoons has the turnover to make a poor flat pint much less likely.

If you've got a longish wait for the train at Nottingham head for the Vat & Fiddle. Walk out of the main entrance and turn left. The pub is on the right hand side and its fantastic!

If you've got time to kill at Derby station exit the station via the main entrance and turn right. Walk along the main road with the station car park on your right hand side and you will soon see both the Brunswick and the Alexandra Hotel. Both are wonderful Real Ale pubs with railway themes. In fact the Alex has a class 37 cab in its car park!

The Yarborough Hotel is Directly outside Grimsby Town & The North Western has opened recently on Lime Street.

And it won't be missed, it was dark, dingy and overpriced.

It was certainly guilty of all those things

However, it was handy during a tight connection. Its certainly disappointing there isn't an improved version inits place in the new station.

It was certainly the Wetherspoons that did the most trade, so probably the most profitable.

Superb pubs and ALWAYS a decent pint Much as Weatherspoons serves a purpose, and i am happy to have them fulfill that purpose on a regular basis please try to find a proper pub selling proper, decent ale. Much better!

I don't understand that comment at all. Proper decent real beer is proper decent real beer. I notice you didn't include the word 'real' but I have. If these two pubs sell a real beer brand that is not available from other pubs, fair enough though.

Apart from the decent ale range and cheap prices, the sheer size of Wetherspoons is also a benefit, that cosy little pub may have bags of character, but nowhere to sit (or stand comfortably) when you want to eat!

The wait at the bar of a Weatherspoons often puts me off. If I want a pint I normally won't go to one, and if I want food I normally won't go to one. They are a good compromise to be fair though and the new ish one by Lime Street station is very nice.

Weatherspoons do a particular job, do that job well and offer a good service and fantastic choice for a good price. You know what you are going to get, although I find the quality of their ale differs widely.

Pubs like those suggested by Richmondcommu are fantastic and always offer a good quality pint of ale. They know how to look after and serve decent ale. It is always good. One of those pubs even has a brewery on site and you cant get fresher than that!

Anything has to be better than The Head of Steam that occupied it before. What a dump that was. At least Wetherspoons have certain standards especially when it comes to their toilets.

Your friends say the service is appalling, that is the Weatherspoons compromise. They are all pretty bad, it takes ages to get served. It isn't a restaurant and it it isn't a pub, it is what it is.

Not sure how widespread it is but you can use an app to order your food in Milton Keynes. Saves queuing but not conducive to getting two halves instead of a pint with the drink inclusive meals.

Understand there is CIS departure in the bar in "Yr Hen Orsaf" Spoons in Aberystwyth which is adjacent to the station.. There was one, but I think it's gone now, in "The Knights Templar" in Bristol which is approx 100 yards from Brunels old train shed through which there is access from Temple Meads station.

I can recommend the Strawbury Duck, just outside Entwistle station.

The Spoons in Victoria station is a bit naff really, especially when you have to climb stairs / an escalator to get to and from it. I much prefer just exiting the station and crossing the road to get to the other Spoons there (Bigger and generally quieter too!)

Apologies Matinsh, my last reply looked a bit harsh and wasn't meant to be at all. Ha ha. Agreed on the Tame barmaid. Ha ha. I generally find the service to be very pedestrian at every Wetherspoons in Liverpool, what you actually get, drinks or food wise, is pretty good. The North Western is a very pleasant place to spend a while if you just missed a train.

Just got back from Riga, now there we got some excellent service in the various bars and cafes we visited. sadly didn't catch any trains.
