Here's a challenge!

I have been given a 2 day voucher by Northern Rail.

Given these constraints

1. Northern trains only

2. Starting on the morning of day 1 from Warrington, not before 9am.

3. Ending back at Warrington, on the 2nd last available train on day 2 (for contingency)

4. Ending day 1 at Carlisle

Can you design a route which includes Hull on the 2nd day? So something like Warrington-Manchester-Carlisle day 1, Carlisle-Leeds-Hull-Sheffield-Warrington day 2.

The problem I'm having is the Preston-Lancaster section which has very few Northern trains.

I am prepared to pay for 1 train journey (eg Preston-Lancaster on VT or TPE) or say a bus from Colne to Skipton.

You would need to go to Doncaster from Leeds or to York from Leeds to get to Hull

Get the 1004 Preston to Barrow class 37s then change into the other set for Carlisle. Then you could maybe do a return to wherever the Tyne Valley line is terminating at the moment. Day 2 do the Settle and Carlisle to Leeds, then York then Hull, come back via Doncaster, Leeds and Manchester for a 319 back towards Liverpool/Warrington? Some ideas to start you off.

Unless you have a special reason for wanting an overnight stop in Carlisle, I would suggest (whilst the Tyne Valley line is not fully open):

Day 1:
1. Pay, Warrington to Wigan NW (08:27 0r earlier),
2. Class 319, 09:03 Wigan - Preston (08:28 from Lime St.)
3. To Carlisle as above.
4. 15:06 Carlisle - Leeds (arrive 17:40).
Not checked timetable, but could probably get back to Warrington same day.
Alternatively, overnight stop somewhere in Leeds/Sheffield/Doncaster area.

Day 2.
Warrington (or overnight stop location) to cover Leeds/York/Hull/Sheffield (either way round). If second day is a saturday, consider doing Sheffield / Gainsborough Central / Grimsby service.

Or ask the TM very nicely Warrington-Wigan, they generally let you. And if they don't, pay and write to VT and get a £45 RTV. :D

.Back on topic though, you'd easily get back to Warrington, I've done exactly that plan several times! Long day mind..

I also wonder if this is a goer....

Warrington-Manchester(walk between Oxford Rd and Victoria)-Bradford(walk Interchange-Forster Square)-Shipley-Carnforth-Barrow-Carlisle.

I suspect that the infrequent Leeds-Morecambe service might scupper that plan....

Should be possible on Monday to Friday. You need to catch the 13:16 Leeds to Lancaster (15:18) then catch the 15:33 Lancaster - Carlisle via Barrow. (Change at Carnforth if Leeds/Morecambe service is late)

More difficult on Saturday, as you would need to use the 10:19 off Leeds. (15:20 Lancaster - Barrow is the last Northern service with a connection from Barrow to Carlisle, and the 13:50 Leeds - Morecambe misses the connection at Carnforth.)

As long g as it is not a Sunday, it is of course possible to take the Leeds - Selby service and change onto an ex-York there. The connections are generally pretty good when travelling West, but very poor when travelling East.

What about Carlisle-Newcastle?

Not available throughout until they clear the Corbridge landslide.

Also, if approached via ECML, you would probably need to pay between York and either Darlington or Middlesbrough --- Northern has no booked passenger services between those stations (and very few between Darlington & Newcastle via Durham.)
