Three new red double-decker buses were smashed after they collided in London's Parliament Square, leaving 13 people injured.
The accident, which included the three new 'Boris buses' and a van, happened on Victoria Street just after 2.30pm
Emergency services, a paramedic, four ambulances and the hazardous response team were called to the scene.

Surprise, Surprise LT's involved....Looks very nasty.

Costly!

Also, seems to show that the platform creates somewhat of a weakness in the structure...wouldn't want to have been standing there for the shunt - mind you I suppose you could jump off when you saw it was about to happen! :)

Not if it was driver only, as the rear door would be closed.

Not sure why the problems with the cooling system mentioned in the article are relevant!

Struggling to see where the third one comes into it? The numerous pics show one bus rear ending another, with no apparent third vehicle?

I also see the 'shunt' bus seems to have crushed a road cone, so possibly it was out of control or taking evasive action. As ever, it's unlikely we'll ever know!

There's a third bus, a Metroline LT, right behind the two that crashed, though it doesn't appear to have collided with either of them.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of it, given there was another case recently where an LT driver crashed after alleging that the accelerator jammed on.

The old 'accelerator jammed/brakes failed' chestnut! I'll wager that no such defect will be found!

Probably driver error on somebodys part so the fact it is two LT's is neither here nor there, I don't what the third bus was?

Was that LT62 near Chelsea Bridge? No fault was ever found on the bus so I guess we'll have to draw our own conclusions?

The first bus i.e. the one that was crashed into is seen in one of the photos as being operated by London General, so it was on the no 11 as was the bus that crashed into it. At 2.30 p.m. an assistant would have been present and the rear doors open.
As said by others, I'm not going to speculate on the causes of the accident. I'll merely observe the long-time practice of London bus staff on busy routes like the 11 of the conductor of one bus exchanging pleasantries with the driver of the bus behind, sometimes for mile after mile if the second bus refused to pass the first. If the two buses were from different garages, the language could get quite vitriolic! The 11 was for decades associated with Dalston garage, always the stroppiest. When I worked for LT the only time I got into a real argument with a crew was on a 2 out of Stockwell garage, which just happens to now work the 11.

No, the front bus was a 148 (London United). It was the bus that went into it that was the 11 from LG.

Well I can only see two buses

This image shows three buses. The Metroline LT is very very close to the back of the 11, much closer than you'd usually expect, but it isn't clear if it hit the 11.

Tony Akers, Transport for London's head of bus operations, said: 'At 1435 today, three new Routemaster buses on routes 148, 211 and 24, operated by London United, Abellio, and Metroline respectively, and a van were involved in a collision at the junction of Parliament Square and Broad Sanctuary.'

I don't see an Abellio bus 211...

No it doesn't appear that the Metroline LT has come into contact with it but the van was clearly involved.

Well, all the reports I've seen, right from a few minutes after it happened, have referred to 3 buses and a van being involved. I see that the TfL 'Head of Bus Operations' is saying much the same.

So why are you suggesting only 2 buses were involved ?

My apologies for wrongly stating the lead bus was a London General: I can now see it was a London United. The TfL person quoted was also wrong in saying a 211 was involved, when it was clearly an 11. Actually, the 211 is the only route in that neck of the woods not operated by the dreaded LT class!

Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,

Is this a bad time to mention that the 211 is rumoured to be converted some time in the next three months, along with the 3?

(apparently the LTs on the 159 have the 3 and 211 on their blinds...)

That being said, I imagine they will be the last routes to be done, there can't be many unallocated LTs out of the 808 left.

The London Omnibus Traction Society have announced the 3 for conversion (shame.... they have some decent buses on it at the moment) but no mention of the 211. And where's the 23, years after all the mock-ups with that on the blinds? Perhaps Tower Transit can't cope with LTs!?

Perhaps further enquiries could be made on this other forum? The 23 does not appear to serve Westbourne Terrace (and nor does any TfL route), although this may change as Crossrail work progresses.

Wikipedia has spoken, with its usual mix of half-truths and fabrication. Only 2 LTs were involved in the accident on routes 24 and 148, plus a non-LT on the 211. This is stated even though the photos clearly show an LT on the 11 embedded in the LT in front. The four routes running the length of Victoria Street are (unusually) operated by four different companies, so there is no chance of a blind having been rewound to disguise the facts. Doh!

Apparently it's due to parking bays in Westbourne Terrace from another forum.

Then the LT is even less fit-for-purpose than I'd assumed. Still, no need to worry about emergency exits when they crash, as they have almost as many as they do seats.
