Is it right the £5 fares won't come with seat reservations? That seems very odd. Easy enough to get one though.

That is quite odd on Scotrail's longer runs, where reservations are readily available (even if the Aberdeen staff fail to put them out on about half of services...). It can actually be quite tricky to get a seat on some services (Sundays can be very busy), but I'd imagine that there wouldn't be any £5 fares on those services anyway.

£7.50 for FC sounds like a good deal to me on the current Scotrail service. I'd certainly have made use of it if I still lived in Aberdeen.

Yeah I know, putting the reservations on the seats is something Scotrail need to work on, and their diagraming. The 1334 train to Inverness from Edinburgh arrives from Inverness just 10 minutes before it departs making it complete hell. (No reservations most of the time, not cleaned properly.)

Am I right in saying 170401 was undergoing refurbishment? I passed it today in Waverly and it looked like it had new seat covers, plug sockets, saltire livery applied, and perhaps new carpets although I didn't see too well. Good to see the Turbostars finally getting a well needed refresh!

Good news that they're getting plug sockets! Much needed on the runs up to Aberdeen etc where peoples' Mothers can easily drain about half their phone battery during the journey up...

Are they still refurbishing the 158s? Only seen one so far. Thought they were meant to have a new one out every month or so?

It'd have to be a pretty good deal with the current service - First Class on Scotrail's Turbostars isn't particularly worthwhile at the moment IMO!

I paid about £6 extra for First Class from Perth to Aviemore this week, which I thought was worthwhile to get a reserved single window seat with a couple of pounds worth of refreshments (and a socket to charge my phone).

Oh right I had no idea, good to know they're still doing it!

The 156 refurb has also started this month. Full interior refurbished including new seats, interior paintwork, carpets, toilets and extra wheelchair space. Not sure if they get wifi and plug sockets - hopefully they do.

Not sure how often it happens but the 1036? Edb to inv was 2x158 on Wednesday which was OK and there were USB sockets at the table I was sat at, which worked fine.

On Thursday, I was on a 156 from ftw to glq which for such a long journey really needs USB or sockets as taking photos uses power!

Luckily both trips weren't overly busy, but revamped stock on both lines would definitely improve things.

Good to hear. Hate the seats currently on the 156s, the exact same as those used on the Class 320s. Hopefully the seats will be the same as the 158s at least. I'm sure they'll get plug sockets. Wifi, I'm not sure -- ever tried getting a signal from Corour?? :p

This article seems to suggest that Scotrail aims to have wifi on all trains by the end of 2018. I guess this makes sense since they'll still be running round the Stranraer and Dumfries lines by then I think.

Hopefully it will be sufficiently powerful to cope with the number of users using it simultaneously.

Highly unlikely. How do you imagine the train accesses the internet? WiFi on train is a triumph of false premise...

Do you know what is the first unit to be done up and when for?

Not sure what unit is in for refurb first. The unit that was written off due to flood damage - 478 is due back in service in April. Currently in Brodies of Kilmarnock (now owners of 478) getting full interior and exterior refurb - different spec to the other 37 Scotrail are keeping on the fleet till end of franchise.

Fine plans...

Meanwhile the truly appalling collapsed seat 158s trundle back and forth between Edinburgh and Perth. My eyes rolled skyward at one point on the journey today and I recognised the distinctive dark and light blue of BR's Regional Railways on the luggage racks, unchanged in over 25 years. Carpet and upholstery I put at near on 20 years.

I agree. I took a 158 on the Fife Circle the other day and it was looking incredibly tired inside. Dirty seats/carpets, dull lighting and a very badly sagging seat. It's good to hear the 158 refurbishment seems to be well underway.

There is already 4 refurbished 158 units out, with another in works. It all takes time.

I'm sure the first 158s to get done are the Haymarket ones. You can tell the way the saloon lights are shaped between the 2 types of units, with the Inverness ones already refurbished after First won the franchise a few years ago, which have different saloon light shapes. Although I'm not too sure if the Inverness ones are getting done up at the same time as I saw 158701 on the Kyle Line 2 weeks ago.
