I've heard on the grapevine via Network Rail that it'll open on 3rd Jan

That's interesting. NR did say to me that it would open in January.

Will HS2 mean it gets knocked down?

Images I seen show that the new entrance will stay but with the hs2 platforms where the hilton hotel and direct line offices are

Well, that's what I wrote here, but someone said I was way out. I just looked at Google Earth and Streetview. Is there a 'Leedsonian' who knows better? You just lay the Higgins report map over the Google map and it seems clear to me.

I believe the southern access to the HS2 station (recent modified proposal) will largely duplicate the southern access that's about to open but further east so it doesn't require it to be demolished. I don't know, and probably nobody knows, whether the existing southern access and station bridge will be demolished.

Here is a question I conjured up last night. If there are a set of ticket barriers at this Southern entrance then how does that work with the other ticket barriers?

I can just see a lot of problems relating to 'reject passback' and swallowing tickets! Is it purely meant to be just an 'entrance' rather than an 'exit' point too?

There's lots of stations elsewhere with exits and barrier lines in more than one place, so I don't think it'll be a major problem... That said, on Saturday evening the existing main gateline at LDS was having a number of issues with valid tickets being rejected (including my own: it seemed to think it was a weekday and was rejecting off-peak tickets) which was causing a lot of congestion at the bottom of the steps from the bridge.

I had a look on Wednesday, looks pretty much complete, they were just putting up some signage, although when I was looking at the photos today, noticed this doozy:

Have dropped NR a tweet but I wonder if anyone had already seen it?

I looked up this word. It says "something outstanding or unique of its kind."

Now I'm confused. What did you mean? Are there such platforms? Is that it?

Perhaps there are two lifts?

Yes, it looks like there's only about 8 ticket barriers so if they're set to "4 in 4 out" at peak times I can see the queues being so massive that it will be no quicker than using the existing exits even if you are heading south of the station.

A further design fault I've noticed is that passengers arriving on platforms 16 and 17 will have to go up an escalator, to go down another escalator to get to the southern exit, which seems ridiculously poorly-planned. Why on earth did they not think to have additional exit doors at platform level?

Really ? That's really dumb ! And probably by design to reduce staffing of gates :-/

Look again....closely;)

Yes I saw the confusing messages on the signs. My query was about the word 'doozy'. I didn't see how it applied (still don't).

Edit
The google entry said it was an old American term but it sounds the sort of thing with which an Australian would come out. Not English at any rate.

It has never been very good at working out what is valid or not. Usually someone has one of the side gates held open doing cursory manual checks, making the whole thing rather pointless.

What that station really needs is another entrance from Platform 8 facing towards Boar Lane instead of making everyone from the east platforms walk all the way down and back again. And some way to prevent people going from 1-5 not leaving via the gateline having to pass right across the motorway of traffic between the transfer deck and the gateline. That bit really wasn't well thought out.

I think the spelling includes the "doozy".

Ah I now see the spelling mistake (myopia problem) thanks. I still don't see what 'doozy' has to do with it. What is 'outstanding or unique of its kind' in a spelling mistake?

Isn't it amazing what the human mind can correct!

Leeds train station’s new £20m south entrance to open this weekend

The new £20m Southern Entrance at Leeds train station will be unveiled to the public on Sunday, benefitting thousands of commuters.

The state-of-the-art entrance will provide a direct link to the city’s growing south bank area – saving passengers up to an hour of travelling time each week.

Up to one fifth of the station’s 100,000 daily users are expected to benefit from the entrance, which also aims to ease congestion at the existing tickets gates.

The train station is the UK’s second busiest outside London and has seen rising demand for a southern entrance with the development of major office spaces in the area such as Bridgewater Place, ASDA’s UK headquarters, Holbeck Urban Village and Leeds Dock

We seem here to have another example of significant cost inflation. When the southern entrance was originally planned, it was expected to cost £15 million:

http://www.theguardian.com/leeds/2010/mar/04/leeds-station-new-entrance

That article carried the sub-heading:

Are plans a brave bid to ease congestion at station - or a £15m white elephant?

That would be even more the case if it had to be demolished to make way for the recently-proposed HS2 concourse and platforms, which must come perilously close to the new structure.

Good grief - even on todays railway that is seriously expensive.

The 2001ish redevelopment only came to £165m and that included months of overnight Transpennine diversions, resignalling, new platforms, the transfer deck, passenger lifts, more running lines and the Eastern concourse.

£20m is enough to open three stations or three miles of reinstated railway.

I have been lobbying Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Metro to reinstate Cross Gates-Scholes where 10,000 houses are being built each side of the trackbed and P&R provision on the A64 adjacent. Transit time by rail with one stop at Cross Gates, 9 minutes loading 500+ on each train. Transit time by bus more than double that with 80 on each bus.

Two years ago it was costed at £17m but no interest shown as it is planned to bus people into Leeds City centre. We could be looking at 2-3,000 in the peaks. That is a lot of buses in an already gridlocked Leeds.

Priorities are all wrong in West Yorkshire as far as rail is concerned.

They're pinning their hopes on Leeds East Parkway.

A railway line/very high frequency connection to an appropriate point is needed for this area. I've seen the estates going up (they're massive) and I'm shocked that they think it will work without a heavier form of transport.
