New Hull-Doncaster service by VTEC

Got up late this morning and checked emails and twitter and spotted this little beauty:

Hull-Doncaster Service

1J10 2028 Hull to Doncaster

Have to say that it is an interesting use of stock that would otherwise go unused and empty back to Leeds. I look forward to getting it this evening as it marks the first new service from Hull since, I think, Hull Trains started up all those moons ago...

Connects perfectly with 1E27 so with one change Hull customers can arrive into London @ 2335 pefect for any early flights or Eurostar travel.

There was a little bit of discussion of thus when I mentioned this in the December 2015 timetable thread a couple of months back. But things aren't always noticed in such general threads so good to highlight it again.

I never noticed it... It is a brave idea from VTEC to use what is otherwise empty stock to earn a little bit of money. I shall attempt to see what the loading figures are tonight for this first run. I can't say I have seen mention of this in the local papers or radio

Yes, so I have noticed. From what I can make out, the woman hit waited for the train and then jumped it - possible suicide move... Hit by a pacer but I'm unsure which one it is...

Edit: just as I was typing my above comment, the train has been removed and I assume reversed back into Hull wrong line. They've got the line back open fairly quickly as they said the line would not be open until 22:30 at the earliest. I shall report which one it is when I travel on 1J10 this evening... From the looks of it, it might be a 142

I wonder if they would do the same with the Lincoln service - that runs all the way up to Neville Hill so could call at Doncaster, Wakefield and Leeds on the way. Depends how much demand there is for a late evening northerly departure.

Just got back from the trip there and back. Seems there were nineteen reservations on the trip but four did not travel for some reason and there were about the same number in passengers with walk up fares. 30 people in a full length train on a trip lasting less then an hour and they still had full catering service!

This might be the train's biggest problem - if it ends up running late a few times and missing that connection there will be some expensive taxi fares down to London. They might decide it is not worth it.

The connection is over 20mins, and the onward train has 25min slack and will be held of it avoids a lot of expensive taxi fares. Not a problem.

Brave but inherently sensible given the stock and all the crew return to Doncaster and then onwards to Neville Hill anyway.

Mmm... Shame it didn't get much of a press coverage as it may have been better used. I got the impression that people used it last night in place of waiting for the Northern service. Still, any new service is welcome

Shame they did not take the time to do a little clean up from the inbound service. It was sat there for a while before boarding was allowed, so a quick run through with a plasticbag might not have gone amiss

The difference with turning Lincoln ECS moves into passenger service is it is not part of their franchised passenger route so it would effectively be run as an open access operator service. I expect Northern would have something to say about that.

A quick consultation of the timetable confirms that 1E27 (2140 from Doncaster to Kings Cross) is a whole hour before the last train of the night to London. So I don't know why anyone would be doing any worrying about taxis even if it were not a generous connection and a very loose schedule!

Same here... The whole lot was on from cold drinks through to beer and spirits - not bad for a loco hauled commuter service!

Yeah understand that. I meant if they could have got going earlier than booked when running cars back to Donny but a 20min turnaround is fine so not much hanging about for them. Suppose I should think more about what passengers want but being traincrew we usually look at opportunities to 'get away'

Normally the catering is all done and dusted and tables cleared shortly after leaving Doncaster.

It's not at all unusual for catering to be finished and the crew just sat around chatting way before the end of the train's journey.
