My thoughts on why Crossrail should not have been built

This is a daft comparison. Are you able to separate the cost of the tunnels of the running lines, from anything required for the actual stations? Building underground is an incredibly expensive.

Couple of points that I don't think have been made before in this thread:

The 'spare' platforms released at Liverpool Street should allow more trains from West Anglia, including via Stratford with all of its own interchange possibilities. There is going to be a new track layout at Bow to facilitate this.

Boris Johnson and others have often said that Crossrail will increase London rail capacity by 10 percent. The irony is that the population has grown so much since it started that even allowing for other improvements in the meantime like the Overground conditions will probably be worse after it is finished than they were when it began.

Roll on Crossrail 2.

I have added a note at the start of thread just to clarify that. I thought it had already been done otherwise I would have done it sooner

Crossrail 2 has a plan for a new station between St Pancras and Euston, which might be interesting for the way it may change connecting between the two. I've walked the change quite a few times and it is simple but a bit annoying with heavy luggage. Some travelators like at Waterloo might be helpful.

Exactly the same criticisms would have occurred, except it would have all been in a thread meant to be about - bizarrely - closures.

Anyway back on topic, there are no "more cost-effective solutions to overcrowding" than Crossrail; a cheaper tube tunnel wouldn't have had anywhere near as many benefits and there isn't anything cost-effective that could be done above ground to alleviate the overcrowding.
