Trainee driver application - immediate or careful decision making?

Hi,

I have stumbled upon some multiple choice question asking how would I make general decisions, no specfic scenarios just strongly agree - stronly disagree options. My initial thought was that by thinking through decisions carefully and considering consequences, would put safety first. However you could argue that you need to act immediatly and not mess about in making a decision in an emergancy situation for example.

Could anyone shed any light on how you make decisions as a train driver?

I recently done one of those SJT questionnaires with MTR Crossrail for the position of trainee driver, and did prioritise safety ahead of the tricky brilliant customer service options or the options which please the management... I mean, safety first ALWAYS right?

Got a rejection straight away. I thought I had answered every question correctly as I have some experience on the railways already (looking back, in this instance I was wrong, clearly!).

Fully accept their decision, but was slightly surprised...

Hi, I usually find with this type of thing there's something in the question that indicates the way the answer should go. Have a careful look at the questions again in case you've glanced over some detail (easily done)that makes an answer more obvious. There is the chance though that the answers are geared to being subjective and highlighting your personal way of thinking. If you have the link I'd like to have a look and give you a more informed opinion (and obviously have a go at the questions )

well usually our decision making is based around common sense as that and safety tend to go hand in hand!.....

For me when it goes wrong I will sit back and think things through before taking action.

Well, here it is! Each statement has five options; strongly agree, agree, uncertain, disagree, strongly disagree. You can only pick one option for each statment.

When making decisions:
* I go with my immediate instinct
* I think about the consequences of the decision before I make it
* I work through a decision in a logical way before deciding what to do
* I think about the consequences once I have made a decision
* I choose the safest option even if it is not the best option for myself
* I would rather make a quick decision rather than ponder at length over it

I would disagree on the statements which suggest quick thinking. But does the recruiter want to hire someone who prefers to make quick decisions..

Sure, I've read that customer service is high on the agenda for many TOCs, but ahead of safety?! wow.

Sure, I've read that customer service is high on the agenda for many TOCs, but ahead of safety?! wow.

wouldn't of thought so........a quick decision isn't always the right one.
