Back in the day we always has local signallers in the area who could be called in to help out with such unplanned events. We have plenty of SLW going on on the GEML at the moment thanks to the HOBC. No Bi-Di North of Colchester to help out.

Exactly - lots of general purpose qualified people around who could rise to the occassion - I had a minor derailment of a Freightliner at Halifax Junction , Ipswich circa 1981 - we had SLW in place from Ipswich Station to Bentley in about 40 mins and apart from a couple of freights diverted - the service ran (albeit with some delays)

Quite, and back then when derailments were 2 a penny, there were plenty of people around qualified to do SLW. There were also plenty of breakdown cranes to put the errant vehicles back on the road.

Now, we don't need that. Except very occasionally we do. But it's not worth keeping hundreds, potentially thousands, of people competent (at rather more expense than it was back then) for a frankly rare occurrence.

Never mind Engineering Work Single Line Working which has pretty much gone out of the window. The other problem is that SLW is slower now than previously due to the inexperience.

This one, believe it or not, is actually quicker to use a Rail Replacement Bus rather than SLW.

That's because the staff safety rules have changed, and you are not allowed to work within x metres of an open line in the hours of darkness. This rules out all but the most basic work with an adjacent line open.

The loco involved & RHTT vehicles have been dumped in the down sidings. Ironically due to new fencing installed by NR we where told that they are blacked as know no official walking route. Up sidings are OOU at the moment too due to footbridge renovation works.

Here's an official steam era training film for it:
Thank you for posting this SLW film. It was filmed by BR HQ on the Somerset & Dorset between Radstock and Shepton Mallet (as you could tell from the unique 2-8-0 locomotive type featured) in the 1950s, and although before my time I knew some who were there during the filming, which was done one Sunday when the line was closed, and described it. I had never seen it before. I don't know if they used actors or local staff. Quite likely the latter.

Back 'in the day' (yawn) drivers were allowed to set back from the leading cab, that isn't permitted any more except in exceptional circumstances, there also needs to be a pilotman in place now etc but then you know all that but would rather have a dig!
????Was he having a dig?? Don't think so!!

When Temporary Block Working, Single Line Working or Hand Signalling is taking place, will it always be a member of NR staff doing it even if the location is a station run by a TOC?

It's unlikely that TOC staff will have the necessary training, but if they do then there is no reason they can't be involved.

Would the points be controlled from the signalbox seen in the background of the 1st photo?

Probably not, that box was closed over 3 years ago
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Just out of interest why would the RHTT Set (Weather it's an actual RHTT or not ) be going to/from the MNR?

seems a strange move non?

Perhaps MNR pay for it,

Read elsewhere that these RHTT trains are visiting the MNR daily Mon-Thurs during the RHTT season for inspections/light maintenance on the pit in Dereham yard.
